  • ASUS unveils the ZenFone Max Pro M1 in India with Snapdragon 636, 5000mAh battery, and Android 8.1 Oreo

ASUS is effectively undercutting Xiaomi in the budget segment with its latest phone.

ASUS hasn’t fared all that well in India last year, but the Taiwanese manufacturer is looking to change its fortunes with its latest phone. The ZenFone Max Pro M1 is an India-first device that is targeted at the budget segment — specifically against the Redmi Note 5 Pro. ASUS is offering similar specs as Xiaomi’s budget phone in the form of a Snapdragon 636, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and a dual camera setup at the back.

The 5000mAh battery is larger than that of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, and ASUS is doing away with its ZenUI interface in lieu of a pure Android interface, with the phone running Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. What’s more interesting is the fact that the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage will cost just ₹10,999 ($165), making the ZenFone Max Pro M1 an absolute steal. Here’s a quick look at what’s on offer.

  • OnePlus India is giving away 6,000 tickets for Avengers: Infinity War

If you’ve bought a OnePlus phone in India, you’ll be able to get a complimentary ticket for Avengers: Infinity War.

OnePlus India tied up with Disney last year to give away 10,000 tickets for Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a way of thanking its community, and the company is now doing the same for Avengers: Infinity War ahead of the launch of the OnePlus 6. OnePlus India has announced that it will give away 6,000 tickets for the upcoming Avengers movie, with everyone that has purchased a OnePlus device in India eligible to claim the tickets.

Like last year, the tickets will be redeemable via Paytm, and customers in ten cities — Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kochi, Pune and Ahmedabad — will be able to claim tickets for the movie on either April 27, 28, or 29. To claim the tickets, you’ll have to head on over to OnePlus India’s website, enter your OnePlus phone’s IMEI number, select your city, and hit the “Get It” button to generate …

  • Nokia 7 Plus vs. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: A cut above

The Nokia 7 Plus costs almost twice as much as the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It’s time to find out if it’s twice as good.

The Nokia 7 Plus represents a lot of firsts for HMD Global: it is the first phone from the manufacturer to feature an 18:9 panel, the first to offer the Snapdragon 660 chipset in India, and the first mid-ranger from the manufacturer to make its way to global markets.

There’s clearly a lot of excitement around the Nokia 7 Plus, and for good reason. The phone is one of the best devices available today for $400, and the camera is particularly good.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is no slouch either. The phone is notable for being the first in the world to feature the Snapdragon 636, and it is similarly feature-rich in other areas as well. Best of all, it is an absolute bargain for ₹13,999 ($210).

The Nokia 7 Plus is all about delivering a clean and uncluttered user interface by way of Android One, and the Redmi Note 5 Pro focuses on customizability with the latest iteration …

  • Why is Google really changing the look of Android, Gmail and others?

  • Terminal app appears in Chome OS Dev, hints at future Linux container support

Back in February, some commits to the Chromium codebase revealed that Chrome OS would soon run Linux applications using a container. While it has been possible for years to run Linux applications on top of Chrome OS using crouton, it’s a hacky solution that only works in Developer Mode. Google’s solution would presumably work better, and perhaps not require Dev Mode to be enabled.

More evidence of this feature has appeared in the Chrome OS Dev channel, as reported by several Reddit users.

  • Google Backup & Sync now works again with HEIF images

Google’s Backup & Sync desktop app, formerly known as the Google Drive client, has received several major updates lately. It added advanced file syncing controls in December, and NAS support in February. Google has now released another update, with the major change being a fix for syncing High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF/HEIC) pictures.

At some point in the past, backed up HEIF images stopped being visible in Google Photos – they could only be located in Drive.
