  • Microsoft renames Beam streaming platform to ‘Mixer,’ releases Android app as a beta

You may recall that Microsoft purchased Beam, a live streaming company, back in August of 2016. The Windows 10 Creators Update, which was released not too long ago, includes Beam support for streaming games without having to install additional software. Today Microsoft has renamed the service to ‘Mixer,’ and released a beta of the Android app.

Mixer’s unique feature that sets it apart from competitors, like Twitch and YouTube, is that live streams have a very low latency.

  • One of the lawsuits over the LG Nexus 5X bootloop has been dropped

    ap_resize

Chimicles & Tikellis LLP, the law firm which was previously involved in a suit against LG for the Nexus 5X bootlooping problem, has filed a notice for voluntary dismissal of their case as of May 4th. Note that this is a different suit than the one by Girard Gibbs LLP that we reported on back in April, which (to our knowledge) is still ongoing.

Some of you that might have contacted the firm in the past to join the class might have received an email over the last week.

  • Acer announces new 10-inch tablets, one with a quantum dot display

Acer’s lineup of Android products mostly consists of low-end hardware with few (if any) unique features. At Computex in Taiwan, the company has announced two more 10-inch tablets. One of them has a quantum dot display, which appears to be a first for any tablet (as far as I can tell), and the other has a focus on productivity.

    The Iconia Tab 10

The more interesting of the two is the Iconia Tab 10, with a model number of A3-A40.

  • Amazon Fire 7 vs Fire HD 8: Which should you buy?

In the battle of Amazon’s all new tablets, which is the right one for you?

Amazon’s latest revisions to its 7 and 8-inch Fire tablets will go on sale in early June 2017. They will completely replace the older models, and while both are modest upgrades, they’re upgrades nonetheless.

And better still, while the hardware gets a little bit better, the price stays the same. So, once again Amazon has two affordable tablets that are actually worth buying. But which should you go for?

  • Samsung’s new Gear 360 camera is available today for $229

Back in March, Samsung announced the successor to its popular Gear 360 action camera. The GoPro competitor won many fans with its ability to record video in 360 degrees via two fisheye lenses. The 2nd generation version promises more of the same, but with 4K video recording plus a smaller, lighter frame. Samsung has now released the device in the US and it’s available for $229.

The original Gear 360 was hamstrung somewhat by the fact that it could only be used in conjunction with a Samsung Galaxy phone, and this new model seems to carry mostly the same limitations.

  • T-Mobile Digits is coming May 31: What is it, and should you use it?

T-Mobile’s Digits brings phone calls and texts into the 21st century, but at a time when people care little about those things, will it make a difference?

Back in December, T-Mobile unveiled a new service called Digits, making phone numbers less reliant on a SIM card, and expanding the simple phone number into the smartphone age.

Now that service is live and available to all T-Mobile customers for free on May 31. It’s a re-imagining of the phone number, but it’s also a way to entice more people to sign up to more expensive T-Mobile One plans.

And for all of its big talk, Digits is a bit confusing, so let’s break it down.

    What is Digits?

At its core, Digits is T-Mobile’s way of utilizing its new IMS (IP Media Subsystem) backend to dynamically direct calls to any device, or store multiple numbers on a single device.

Basically, without the technical mumbo jumbo, it’s a way to free the phone number from its legacy place, and to utilize the flexibility data-based nature of Voice…
