  • Ingenico’s latest mobile POS reader runs Android out of the box

With the Moby M70, Ingenico is offering a mobile POS solution running Android 7.0 Nougat.

Ingenico is one of the largest integrated payment solution providers in the world. Even if you haven’t heard the name previously, if you’ve used a credit card reader at a retail store recently, chances are it was made by either Ingenico or Verifone. Ingenico has been offering POS (point of sale) systems for over 35 years, and the company is now rolling out its next-gen mobile POS solution, dubbed the Moby M70.

The highlight of the Moby M70 is that it runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. There have been mPOS solutions based on Android before, but where the Moby M70 differs is that it comes with full access to the Play Store. That’s a huge deal as it gives developers the ability to distribute apps directly through the Play Store.

Traditionally, Android-based POS solutions were locked down, and any apps that were designed for a particular platform had to be certified individually. Ingenico …

  • OnePlus 3/3T Open Beta adds face unlock, Switch app, and more

OnePlus has been in the news for a few bad reasons lately, which to me has further solidified my dichotomous feelings toward the company, but that’s not stopping it from churning software updates. Up today we have the OnePlus 3 and 3T, which are getting bumped to the Open Beta 30 and 21, respectively, with the same changelog for both.

    Release note

  • [Deal Alert] Get a gold-plated Huawei Watch for $252.52 ($497.47 off)

The Huawei Watch was perhaps the best of the first-generation Android Wear devices. Aside from it being the most watch-looking watch (compared to the postage stamp glued to a piece of leather styling of the original ZenWatch), the original Huawei Watc…

  • Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Top 5 things you need to know

The 18:9 screen is new, but the rest of the phone should be familiar to anyone that has used a Redmi Note 4.

Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi 5 Plus last month, bringing the 18:9 form factor to the budget segment. The Chinese manufacturer isn’t the first to roll out a budget phone with minimal bezels, but the company is once again showing that it can absolutely dominate when it comes to the value proposition. The base variant of the Redmi 5 Plus retails for the equivalent of $150, making it an incredible bargain when you consider the hardware on offer.

The Redmi 5 Plus is currently limited to China, and as the phone made its debut just a month ago, the global ROM isn’t available just yet. That means you can’t get a version of the Redmi 5 Plus with Play Services installed out of the box. As such, it’s too early to make a quantitative assessment of how the device fares in comparison to the likes of the Redmi Note 4 and other devices in this segment. I’ll have more to share once the global…

  • It looks like the Honor 8 won’t get Oreo after all

Huawei’s Honor sub-brand has been responsible for some nice pieces of hardware over the years, but the software always seems to lag behind. Just recently, the Honor 7X launched with Nougat when it should by all rights have had Oreo. Owners of the Honor 8 are also getting some bad Oreo news—they won’t see Oreo at all. At least, this is what Honor’s Indian Twitter account is telling people.

As recently as late 2017, Huawei/Honor was telling owners to hang tight as it looked into Oreo updates for the Honor 8 series.

  • Samsung Galaxy X foldable phone: Rumors, Images, Details, and More!

This will be the next big thing … at some point.

The mobile industry has been tracking this rumored Samsung “Galaxy X” prototype phone for several months, gradually pushing back the supposed launch timeline for what’s supposed to be a successor to the general “Galaxy S” line. But as waves of details about the upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9+ come in, we’re still struggling for details on what this supposed Galaxy X with a foldable display will be. Reports with new details out of CES 2018 are at least giving us something to work with.

No, you didn’t miss an announcement — Samsung didn’t have anything public to say about the Galaxy X (if that is its real name) at CES. But as many companies do, Samsung took the opportunity of having so many high-up industry people together to show off what it’s working on to partners. According to The Investor, this year that included the Galaxy X. The device in question has a 7.3-inch display that can fold in the middle — multiple versions we…

  • Moto E5 image leak reveals rear-mounted fingerprint sensor with Motorola logo on top

Last year’s Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus both received high praises in our reviews. Those phones both sported front-mounted fingerprint sensors, just as Galaxy devices and iPhones did for many years. However, it looks like Lenovorola may be moving the fingerprint sensor to the back for the Moto E5, according to a leaked image.

The image doesn’t immediately make it obvious that the Moto E5 has a fingerprint sensor at all, but a closer look at the back reveals that the logo underneath the camera doubles as a sensor.

  • TAG Heuer has an Android Wear watch that costs $200K

TAG Heuer’s been showing off a bunch of its watches in Geneva, and one model, in particular, has caught our eye. In addition to the new smaller and cheaper Modular 41 announced yesterday, TAG Heuer has been showing off a diamond-encrusted white gold version of its Modular 45. This Android Wear-powered ostentation can be yours for a mere $200K (190’000 CHF).

The watch is part of TAG Heuer’s Modular 45 series, though this model has the “Full Diamond” name attached to it as well, which makes sense. With 589 diamonds spread across almost every exterior surface on the bezel and bracelet (totaling 23.35 carats), it’s pretty full of them.
