  • Project Fi just launched a highly competitive $80 unlimited plan called ‘Bill Protection’

One less caveat to deal with on Google’s carrier.

Project Fi has always been a great solution for those who use less than about 4GB of data per month, but now Google’s giving the nod to people who want more. A new feature called “Bill Protection” effectively gives Project Fi users an unlimited data option, taking on the big carrier competition that has swung back to heavily promoting unlimited data plans.

So here’s how it works. From the start, everything is the same as it always has been. You pay $10 per month for each gigabyte of data you use, and any data you don’t use you aren’t charged for. But with Bill Protection, once you hit 6GB of data, or $80 for the month ($20 “Fi Basics” + $60 of data), your bill is capped — but you continue to get data service, just like a flat-rate unlimited plan from other carriers.

Really, it’s the best of both worlds. In months when you use less than 6GB of data, you only pay for the data you used. If you have a heavy month of usage and you…

  • Google says a fix is coming tomorrow for Wi-Fi problems associated with Cast devices

A few days back we reported that the Google Home Max (among other Cast-enabled devices) might be connected with some recent reports for widespread Wi-Fi troubles. Google has indirectly responded to this issue in a page on the Device Support section for Google Home support, in which the company acknowledges the existence and cause of the problem, promising a fix tomorrow.

This particular issue has picked up a lot of traction in the news, having been reported on by outlets covering a range from Engadget to The Sun, so it’s not just a niche problem.

  • Google raises the bar for monetizing videos on YouTube

It’s no easy feat to keep YouTube respectable enough for big advertisers when it relies entirely on user-created content from legions of video makers. Advertisers have complained to Google with increasing regularity when their ads show up alongside co…

  • Best icon packs for Android

Without icon packs, we are left with chaos.

App icons are different shapes, different sizes, different color schemes and follow different design guidelines. Samsung’s icons look different than Google’s icons, look different from Microsoft’s icons, look different from every other developer’s icons. They are messy. They are awkward. They need to be brought under control. And until Adaptive Icons are implemented consistently and required for all third-party apps, that’s where icon packs come in.

Icon packs bring control. Icon packs bring consistency. Icon packs bring classiness. Even if you’re not into custom themes, you should use an icon pack. A good icon pack can help you find your apps more quickly, can help make your phone look and feel less cluttered, and they just look better. And whether you want an icon pack that stands out or blends in, we have the best icon packs right here for your pleasure and consideration.

  • What color LG V30 should you buy: Black, silver, blue, violet, or red?

Which of the five LG V30 colors should I buy?

The LG V30 nominally launched with two colors, Aurora Black and Cloud Silver, but in the weeks and months since it was released we’ve seen other colors either break exclusivity and move to new markets or be introduced altogether. Now, we have five different colors to choose from … well, sort of, depending on where you live and what carrier you use. Those restrictions aside, we have Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue, Lavender Violet and Raspberry Rose.

I think we can all agree those are some great names, but which one is right for you? Unlike some companies, LG has quite a bit of variation in the colors so you have a wide range of interesting options with little overlap in their styles. Here’s a look at all five colors, and a few notes to keep in mind when you’re choosing which one to buy.

The Aurora Black V30 is classy, simple and stealthy. Black glass combines with shiny black metal to create a sle…

  • [Deal Alert] Save a few bucks on select Google Home and Chromecast Ultra combos, I guess ($10-$30 off)

Google is offering discounts on particular combinations of its Google Home and Chromecast hardware, but the deals are just kind of okay, and frankly a bit of a letdown with all the big price slashes from the holidays still fresh in our memories.

Nonetheless, if you’re in the market for a Google Home device or a Chromecast Ultra, you can save a little bit of money with some of these combinations:

    • Save $30 on a Google Home Max plus a Google Home Mini ($418), which is sort of like getting the Mini for twenty bucks (though it had just been $30 over the holidays all by itself, but we’re trying not to think about that).

  • How to use your desktop in VR

You can use your entire desktop in VR.

The scene from the movie Minority Report in which Tom Cruise’s character, John Anderton, is moving virtual screens around with his hands is imprinted in the minds of techies everywhere. How cool would it be to have a bunch of movable screens surrounding you? You’d be able to enlarge, shrink, and rotate to your heart’s content…

Having your desktop surround you is an option within VR, whether you’re using third-party apps or a feature baked right into the platform’s software. Let’s take a look at the best options when it comes to using your desktop in VR.

    HTC Vive

When using SteamVR with the HTC Vive, there’s an overlay menu that contains an option to see your desktop. It’s big, it’s clear, but it’s not customizable like you’d find with the Oculus Desktop or Cliff House.

You can’t create multiple windows and they won’t follow you around, and since you’re in a sort of overlay, you can’t really do anything else while viewing your desktop….

  • T-Mobile customers can get $4 tickets to five movies this year

The promotion starts January 23 and will be available through Atom Tickets.

Going to the movies is always something I enjoy doing, but one of the not-so-great aspects of doing so are the high ticket prices. The folks at T-Mobile apparently feel the same way, as the Un-Carrier has announced a new partnership with Twentieth Century Fox in which its customers will be able to buy movie tickets for just $4 each.

This deal starts on January 23, and it’ll be available for five of 2018’s hottest movies, including Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Red Sparrow, Deadpool 2, Atalia: Battle Angel, and Dark Phoenix.

T-Mobile customers will redeem their $4 ticket within the T-Mobile Tuesdays app and then purchase it through Atom Tickets.

In addition to this, T-Mobile will also be running various movie-themed contests so you can have a shot at winning trips to premiers, early movie screenings, and other “VIP experiences.”
