Asus Zenfone 5Z review: As good as it is, buy a OnePlus 6 instead

Friday, August 24th, 2018

When Asus announced the Zenfone 5 lineup at MWC, all eyes were fixed on the the king of the group, the 5Z. Fast forward almost six months and the phone is finally available to purchase at a mere $500 in the U.S. While the high-end Android flagship market is squarely controlled by Samsung, there's a curious middle ground between budget and top-tier devices. This "affordable flagship" space is heavily populated with offerings from OnePlus, Honor, and Xiaomi, but Asus has set its sights on a piece of that pie with the 5Z.

Asus Zenfone 5Q review: Pretty on the outside, but full of questionable decisions

Monday, July 30th, 2018

At MWC, Asus showed off its 2018 Zenfone lineup. Most of the attention fell on the 5Z and 5, with their display notches and fresh designs. Perhaps left to the wayside was the lower-end device of this family, the Zenfone 5Q (or Lite, depending on where you are). It doesn't resemble its brethren whatsoever, right down to even lacking a notch.

As is typical with Asus, the focus on this budget phone is on cameras, namely four of them.

ASUS Zenfone Max Plus M1 review: A big battery alone does not a good phone make

Sunday, April 15th, 2018

Back at CES, Asus showed off a follow-up to the not-so-old Zenfone 4 Max, which was a phone that ultimately disappointed me. Attempting to capitalize on the love for big batteries, the Taiwanese company decided to spin off the Zenfone Max line into its own device family. These phones will offer large batteries and many of the latest smartphone trends for budget prices.

So here we are with the first, the Zenfone Max Plus M1.

Hands-on with the ASUS ZenFone 5Z and 5 series: Shameless notch-envy

Thursday, March 1st, 2018

ASUS' Android phones might slide under the radar for most, but the company's new ZenFone 5 series probably won't. The company has had some trouble historically trying to penetrate the US phone market to any great depth—perhaps a result of its crowded, sometimes confusing product portfolio—but nonetheless it persists. Some of its phones have even been pretty good. But now that the wraps have been taken off its latest line of phones, it seems like ASUS has found a successful way to attract the attention it wanted: by copying the iPhone X's notch.

ASUS formally announced the three new phones at its event in Barcelona just a couple of days ago, and though we had a bit of an idea what the ZenFone 5Q/Lite would look like, the 5 and 5Z were a bit more surprising.

ASUS unveils ZenFone 5Z, 5, and 5Q with bezel-less displays, dual cameras, and more

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Asus, as we expected, showed off the new ZenFone 5 family at MWC. Unlike years past, the Taiwanese company is keeping in step with modern smartphone trends, in some cases to the point of plain copying the iPhone X. Regardless, some of the new devices look fantastic and our initial impressions are relatively positive.

Besides the familiar design on two of the devices, Asus went all out with its talk of what it calls "ZeniMoji." I kid you not — pulled straight from one of the press releases: "ZeniMoji is a fun new ZenFone 5 feature that lets users animate cute avatars using their own voice, facial expressions and head movements.

ASUS begins updating the ZenFone 3 Max with ZenUI 4.0

Thursday, December 21st, 2017

Three months ago, ASUS promised to update the ZenFone 3 product line to ZenUI 4.0: a trimmed down, more minimal version of the company's software. They started with the ZenFone 3 Zoom at the same time as that announcement, and just recently the ZenFone 4 Max got it. Three months later, its forebear the ZenFone 3 Max is able to join the fun. The update will be rolling out over the next week.

ASUS Zenfone 4 Max updated to ZenUI 4.0

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

ASUS has been working on its custom Android skin for years, named 'ZenUI.' The fourth major version first appeared on some Zenfone 4 devices, but a few in that line were still rocking ZenUI 3. One of these was the Zenfone 4 Max, and now ASUS is finally getting around to updating it.

An over-the-air update has started to roll out to the Zenfone 4 Max, with the highlight feature being ZenUI 4.0.

ASUS Zenfone 4 Max review: Not a shining example of a good budget phone

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017

Asus just announced its Zenfone 4 family of devices a couple of months ago, creating a convoluted and confusing portfolio. To kick things off, we have the Zenfone 4 Max on the lower end of the group. For $199, you get budget-level specs, except for the massive 5,000mAh battery. Besides it just being large and providing a lot of life, the Zenfone 4 Max's battery can also charge other devices. Cool, right?
