The YouTube app’s auto-playing home screen video previews are expanding to non-Premium users

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

YouTube Premium subscribers have been able to preview videos on the app's home screen for months now — videos play silently with captions until you scroll away from them. More people will be able to enjoy the feature soon, though, as the YouTube team has shared that "Autoplay on Home" is coming to non-Premium users over the next few weeks.

Auto-playing videos are handy for deciding whether a clip is worth your time without tapping to open it.

YouTube Originals will be available for free with ads by 2020

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

One of the perks of YouTube's paid tier, YouTube Premium, is access to YouTube Originals — scripted programming more similar to traditional TV shows than most of the other content you'd find on YouTube. It seems the streaming platform is changing tack, though, as it's announced that Originals will be available without a subscription by 2020.

The shift to an ad-supported model is "to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase," according to a statement obtained by Vanity Fair.

Monday, November 26th, 2018

Looking to migrate your Google Play Music subscription to YouTube Music? You may want to hold off if you have Kidz Bop listeners (read: children) linked to your account. Following your transition, those accounts will no longer be functional.

One particular Google Play Music user shared this peculiarity with us in an email. Following an upgrade to YouTube Music to include premium, ad-free YouTube with their subscription, the music app was subsequently blocked for their two children's accounts.

Google posts guide to fix overlapping YouTube and Play Music subscriptions

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

It's been a volatile time for Google's streaming services. YouTube Red was rebranded as YouTube Premium in May and YouTube Music Premium was launched, which lacked some features found on Google Play Music. The product team held an AMA with to calm some of the anger behind it all. Amid the confusion, it’s possible users might have subscribed to memberships with the same services. To help customers sort out their subscription mess and save some money, Google posted a YouTube Help document detailing the various feature sets and steps to take for remedying duplicate music accounts.

Weekend poll: Do you subscribe to YouTube Premium?

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Almost everyone watches YouTube — if not regularly, at least occasionally. The service is a functional monopoly when it comes to online video. It's also ad-supported, and while those advertisements aren't anywhere near as annoying or ridiculous as contemporary television, they are a noticeable part of using YouTube. With benefits like offline use, background playback, YouTube Music, and no advertisements, I'm curious how many of our readers have elected to pay for YouTube Premium.
