Facebook Messenger may soon let you ‘unsend’ messages

Friday, October 12th, 2018

You've almost certainly said something you regretted in a chat, whether it was because you were tired, angry, or just looking at the wrong conversation — but Facebook Messenger could soon get a feature that'll let you take those misguided statements back. Evidence has been found that an "unsend" option is in the works.

The implementation seems pretty straightforward: long pressing on a sent message will give you options to delete it or unsend it.

The new Chromecast is already up for sale at a UK retailer

Tuesday, October 9th, 2018

Google is expected to announce a refreshed Chromecast at its hardware event in New York today, but it seems a UK retailer got its timing a little off. Very, online purveyor of clothes, furniture, and electronics, is already selling the new model.

This is a little different from Best Buy, which let a few third-generation Chromecasts out the door prematurely earlier this month. Very's listing is fully functional, complete with the option to add the device to your basket. Aside from a few photos, though, the seller doesn't reveal any new information; all the product details in the listing for this new model are the same as the last one, right down to the price: £29.99.

It's clear that Samsung intended to mislead. When translated, the caption on Samsung's tweet (which has since been deleted) reads:

A dating registered in many selfies.

Google promises to stop suggesting ‘my face’ when you type ‘sit on’ in Gboard

Saturday, July 28th, 2018

Applying machine learning to everything under the sun can be tricky. Case in point: Gboard's text prediction has been suggesting people type "my face and" after the words "sit on," resulting in a reference to a sexual act. Google says it's an accident, though, and it's working on a fix for the errant suggestion.

The keyboard makes predictions based on both individual users' typing habits and more general language training. By default, it doesn't suggest words or phrases that could be construed as offensive (the option exists, but it's buried five taps into the settings menu), and it generally errs on the side of caution.
