Google buys undisclosed smartwatch technology from Fossil for $40 million, includes some personnel

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

Google's wearables platform hasn't been as successful as Android itself, but that isn't stopping Google from investing in it further. Today Fossil has announced that Google is acquiring undetermined "smartwatch technology" it is currently developing for a cool $40 million. Together with the IP acquisition, Google is also picking up part of Fossil's research and development team, with the sale set to close this month.

Precise details aren't certain, and we're as curious as you are when it comes to the nature of this new technology, still allegedly in development.

Mobvoi unveils two updated Wear OS smartwatches: Ticwatch E2 and S2

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Chinese AI firm Mobvoi has been a shining light in the generally underwhelming Android Wear/Wear OS space, and today it's announcing two new products. The TicWatch E2 and S2 (standing for Express and Sport) are follow-ups to the company's most affordable smartwatches, with updated designs, bigger batteries, but still Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100.

While it's disappointing not to get the latest silicon, it's understandable given the likely low price points of these models and it didn't stop the TicWatch Pro from performing well when I reviewed it.

Dark Sky brings hyperlocal weather information to Wear OS

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Checking the weather is one of the features I use most on my phone. For years, I had a widget dedicated to just that on my homescreen, a layout I abandoned only a short time ago. When it comes to wearables, you have a couple of options in this area. Some watches come with pre-built faces that include weather info, you can build your own in something like Pujie, or install a separate app.

LG Watch W7 review: A smartwatch that shouldn’t be ignored

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

If we're to listen to complaints about Wear OS, the one thing everybody agrees on is that OEMs should try new things. That's why it's interesting to see that LG's announcement of the Watch W7 instantly became the most criticized smartwatch of 2018 — possibly ever. It had an old chipset, a small-ish battery, and hands that obscured the screen. The watch was mocked so relentlessly, we had our doubts that it would ever come out.

LG Watch W7 drops to $220 ($230 off), quite possibly the biggest smartwatch flop of 2018

Monday, December 10th, 2018

LG's announcement of the Watch W7 was met with jeers and derision. That was not only because mechanical hands on a smartwatch are a bit silly, but LG wanted a whopping $450 for the device. That was a tough sell in a world where Android smartwatches have yet to prove their utility, but that price didn't last long. After dropping almost immediately to $250, the Lg Watch Wy is now down another $30.

Google’s Jacquard smart jacket can now alert you when you’re leaving your phone behind [APK Download]

Friday, December 7th, 2018

These days, Google's hardware may be all about phones, tablets, laptops, and smart-home gear, but it also continues to experiment with wearables — some more eccentric than others. And while you might know a friend who has a Clips camera, or once spotted someone in public sporting Google Glass, the Commuter X Jacquard smart jacket from Levi's and Google has got to be one of the most low-key of the company's wearable projects.
