Verizon LG V30 update adds AI camera and ThinQ branding

Friday, April 20th, 2018

At Mobile World Congress, LG announced a new version of the V30 called the V30S ThinQ, but it wasn't actually new. There were no hardware changes to enable the AI camera features (just more storage and RAM), so there was nothing stopping LG from rolling them out in an update. It did so in Korea last month, and now the same re-branding is coming to Verizon in the latest update.

AT&T pushes Android 8.0 update to LG V30

Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

LG V30 devices on AT&T have started receiving an update to Android 8.0 Oreo. One of our readers was kind enough to let us know his device got the update today, and some Reddit users are reporting the same.

You can see tipster Steve's software info screen here, showing an Android version number of 8.0.0—and AT&T's name (and distinctive 4G icon) in the status bar.

V30 devices in South Korea got the update last year; in the US, Verizon was the first carrier to push Oreo to the V30 earlier this month, followed by Sprint.

LG V30 on Sprint gets Android 8.0 Oreo

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

LG has released a number of V30 variants over the past few months, with some of them running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box (like the V30S ThinQ). Unfortunately, the company has been slow to update the Nougat-powered V30 and V30+, at least outside of South Korea. The Verizon V30 received Android 8.0 earlier this month, and now the Sprint model is next.

We received the above screenshot from one of our readers (thanks Ted!), who said the update was 1.7GB in size.

LG V30 update in South Korea brings ThinQ AI camera features and branding

Sunday, March 11th, 2018

Back when LG still hadn't officially announced the interestingly-named V30S ThinQ and was merely teasing it, the company mentioned that the new features might trickle down to existing V30 devices. At MWC, LG confirmed that the V30 and V30+ would in fact get ThinQ features. In keeping with that promise, a reader in South Korea who owns a V30+ (a V30 with 128GB of storage) recently received an update that included a few interesting additions from the ThinQ.

Android 8.0 Oreo is rolling out to Verizon’s LG V30

Friday, March 9th, 2018

South Korean models of the LG V30 began receiving Oreo right before we kicked off 2018, but we haven't heard about any news on the V30 Oreo front since then. Surprisingly, Verizon seems to be the first US carrier to roll Android 8.0 Oreo out, with reports from multiple users who've received it.

According to those who've installed the update, it doesn't make too many changes aside from an updated settings app and a few changes to the notification pane.

[Hands-on] LG announces the LG V30S ThinQ, which is just a V30 with camera AI and more RAM

Sunday, February 25th, 2018

LG rolled the V30 out late last year with a few notable features, at least for LG. That phone had the first OLED panel on an LG phone in several years, and it didn't have the extra ticker display that defined older V-series phones. It turns out LG isn't done with the V30 yet. As rumors indicated, LG is releasing a new version of the V30 called the V30S ThinQ (yes, that's the name) with AI camera goodies.

Google will begin certifying Android devices for business use, starting with phones from LG, BlackBerry, Motorola, and others

Wednesday, February 21st, 2018

When it comes to security, Android devices are a mixed bag - to say the least. Few manufacturers make promises about long-term support, and timely security updates are rare. This is understandably a concern for large businesses, which often don't want to worry about security flaws or constantly deploy new devices. For many enterprise customers, the question of which Android phones should be used is difficult to answer.

Google's solution to this problem is the 'Android Enterprise Recommended' program, which defines which Android devices are ideal for business use.

LG details its Vision AI and Voice AI, which will debut on the 2018 version of the V30

Tuesday, February 13th, 2018

Last week we heard rumors that LG would announce an updated version of the LG V30 at Mobile World Congress, which lines up well with the previous reports that the company won't release new devices on a yearly schedule and that the expected G7 was scrapped and a new design was being worked on. The other part of the V30 leak was an emphasis on the addition of an AI of sorts called "LG Lens." LG, as it always does prior to major events, has out-leaked everyone and confirmed this by announcing a new 2018 version of the V30 which comes with new AI functionalities.

LG reportedly working on updated V30 with more storage and AI-powered ‘LG Lens’

Friday, February 9th, 2018

The LG V30 was somewhat of a mixed bag. It had a fantastic design, with excellent camera performance, a microSD card slot, wireless charging, and even a headphone jack. Unfortunately, the OLED screen suffered from quality issues, and the $830 asking price likely kept many potential buyers away. LG could be working on a slightly-upgraded version, according to a new report from ET News.

The phone, which is believed to be the 'V30s,' won't be much of a change from the existing model.
