Commuters in Melbourne can now add their Myki card to Google Pay

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Google Pay is aiming at becoming a true virtual wallet by gathering payment and loyalty cards in a single application. Since last year, commuters in Las Vegas, Portland, and the West Midlands have also been able to save their transit tickets in their phones, allowing them to leave their wallets at home. Melburnians, and more generally Victorians, can also now use their handsets as their transportation pass, as Google Pay just added support for Myki, the region's transit card — not the password manager we reviewed.

It’s now a lot easier to find public transit near any location in Google Maps

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019

I often use Google Maps and public transport to get around while traveling. During my trips, there's this one missing feature that keeps on puzzling me: why is there no easy way to see public transport stops near me? Or why is there no section in any listing on Maps that shows stations near it? Instead, I have to zoom in and out on the map, trying to figure out what the closest option is.

West Midlands Metro is the third transit system to store tickets on Google Pay

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

Google Pay may first and foremost be a platform for transferring money, whether that's in the form of making mobile payments with NFC on our phones, buying things online, or just sending cash to friends or family, but that's just one component of its broader capabilities. In addition to storing loyalty cards or coupons, we've slowly been seeing support grow for transit tickets, letting users access fare passes right on their phones.

Google Maps is testing a combined Commute tab to replace Driving and Transit

Monday, September 3rd, 2018

The Google Maps team seems to be trying out different layouts and options for its bottom tabs. Most users have three tabs (Explore, Driving, Transit), in the US and other select countries you also have the For You tab, some users are starting to see another separate tab for the Map, and I just came across this other design with a combined Commute tab.

I was setting up directions on a friend's Android phone (running the latest stable 9.85.2 version) when I noticed something interesting.

Google’s At A Glance widget shows relevant transit departure times

Friday, June 22nd, 2018

Ever since it debuted with the Pixel's launcher, the At A Glance widget has been slowly adding more features. Now, it covers your calendar events, flights, and traffic information, and it works on non-Pixel devices too. One small change you may have noticed recently is that the traffic time comes with a bit of added info if you take public transportation: transit departure times.

Over the past few days, both of our tipsters have started seeing their metro and bus departure times in the widget.

Google Pay v1.57 prepares support for airline boarding passes and event tickets, Suica and WAON payment cards, and more [APK Teardown]

Sunday, April 22nd, 2018

It wasn't that long ago that Google Pay (and its previous names) was solely focused on making purchases in a store or paying on the spot to get onto subways...and sometimes sending money to friends. Google recently added support for one-time transit tickets on the Las Vegas Monorail and prepaid commuter cards with the TriMet in Portland, Oregon, but things are about to get a lot more interesting thanks to the latest update.

Google Pay now supports Hop Fastpass transit tickets in Portland, Oregon

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Transit tickets have been showing up in our Google Pay APK teardowns since October of last year, finally appearing for the first time with support for the Las Vegas Monorail. The premise is simple: instead of having to purchase a physical ticket and topping it up for public transportation, users can tap their NFC-enabled phones against the terminal and use a sort of 'virtual card' instead. After it was unveiled that Google Pay would soon support public transit in Portland, Oregon, it is now possible to use the Hop Fastpass app to ride on TriMet, C-TRAN buses, MAX light rail trains, WES commuter rail trains, Portland Streetcar, and C-TRAN's Vine Rapid Transit with Google Pay.

Google Pay now supports transit tickets for Las Vegas Monorail, more cities coming soon

Monday, March 19th, 2018

We've been seeing signs for a little while that Google Pay was readying transit ticket support, with the website even being updated to confirm as much. We've been furiously checking the app to see if there's any sign of the feature, only to disappointed each time. Now, Google has made transit tickets on Google Pay official.

According to the blog post, compatibility with both prepaid tickets and passes is exclusive to the Las Vegas Monorail right now, with more cities and transit agencies to be added soon.
