Sprint joins competitors in offering a rewards app full of mediocre coupon deals

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

As T-Mobile and Sprint's merger sits on hold during the government shutdown, Sprint has taken a leaf from its future business partner and launched a rewards program. My Sprint Rewards, much like T-Mobile Tuesdays and the similar offerings from Verizon and AT&T, is essentially a coupon app, offering discounts on things like clothing and fast food, or allowing users to enter larger draws for free vacations.

Unlike T-Mobile Tuesdays, there's no specific day of the week that rewards are released - deals will be added "regularly" and customers are encouraged to check back often.

Netflix is bumping prices on all streaming plans

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

Netflix launched its streaming video service 12 years ago, forever changing the way many of us watch TV. The cost for Netflix's all-you-can-stream subscriptions has gone up over the years, and it's time for another price hike. All three tiers of Netflix service are going up, but T-Mobile has your back (for now).

The most popular Netflix plan is also the one getting the largest percentage increase. The two-screen HD plan is going up to $13 from $11.

You can now rebrand your T-Mobile OnePlus 6T without unlocking the bootloader

Friday, January 11th, 2019

One the best phones of last year, the OnePlus 6T marked a new chapter for the Chinese company. Part of the progress involved a deal with T-Mobile, which came with its pros and cons. Since it's a different SKU from the international dual-SIM variant (such as you'd buy straight from OnePlus), the Tmo version is excluded from things like the Open Beta program. But some savvy people over in the XDA forums figured out a way to rebrand the Tmo 6T to the international version without unlocking the bootloader.

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

Last year, a large number of U.S. carriers were under fire for selling live location data to third-party companies, including LocationSmart and Securus. These companies then sold that data to other companies, and so on and so forth.

T-Mobile rolls out Caller Verified spam call protection, starting with the Galaxy Note9

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

To say that spam calls are annoying would not only be redundant, but it'd also be a big understatement. These nuisances are primarily why I hardly answer my phone anymore and they've only gotten worse in recent months and years. T-Mobile is taking a stand against it by implementing what it calls Caller Verified technology, starting with the Samsung Galaxy Note9.

Once Note9 owners get the update, any calls on the T-Mobile network that they receive will show a "Caller verified" message on the incoming call screen, assuming that Tmo itself has authenticated the call as legitimate and not hijacked.

U.S. carriers under fire for continuing to sell phone location data to third parties

Wednesday, January 9th, 2019

Last year, a large number of U.S. carriers were under fire for selling live location data to third-party companies, including LocationSmart and Securus. These companies then sold that data to other companies, and so on and so forth. As you might expect, the bad publicity hasn't stopped carriers from working with those companies, as evidenced by a recent article from Motherboard.

Motherboard reporter Joseph Cox wrote, "I gave a bounty hunter a phone number.

Latest T-Mobile OnePlus 6T update is breaking Google Play certification for some

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

The newest OnePlus 6T update (A6013_34_181029) pushed out by T-Mobile appeared to be pretty bland, with only support for an "additional domestic roaming partner" in the changelog. However, according to a number of disgruntled users on Reddit, the update is breaking Google Play Protect certification on the device.

Understandably, owners are not pleased, since this stops services such as Google Pay from working on the 6T. Possible solutions such as clearing Play Store data haven't been able to fix the problem, so waiting for T-Mobile to release another update with the bug squashed seems to be all anyone can do, unless Google can do something on its end.

Friday, January 4th, 2019

The way that smartphones send and receive messages is changing, and the name of the game is now RCS: Rich Communication Services. Little by little, manufacturers and carriers are getting their handsets ready for this next-gen protocol, so we're always interested in seeing when some new hardware comes on board.
