LG could be planning an Android One Q7 variant exclusive to T-Mobile

Monday, June 18th, 2018

While the Android One program was initially intended to be something more akin to what Android Go is now, it's still a simple, bloat-free version of the OS that gets faster updates than skinned OEM devices. Until Nokia decided to go all in with Android One, there was very little choice when it came to devices, but it looks like other manufacturers are coming around to the benefits.

Rumors have been circulating for a little while that LG is planning to release an Android One smartphone.

T-Mobile’s LG Aristo 2 PLUS is launching on June 15th with Android 7.1 Nougat

Monday, June 11th, 2018

Android Oreo is nearly a year old now, and we're on our third Android P developer preview. So why exactly is LG launching the Aristo 2 PLUS on T-Mobile with Android 7.1 Nougat? Yes, it's a budget-oriented phone with its unnamed 1.4GHz processor and 2GB of RAM, but it's 2018. Come on.

Nothing on the LG Aristo 2 PLUS seems very deserving of that "PLUS" moniker. It comes with a 5.0" 720p IPS display, an unnamed 1.4GHz quad-core chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and a 2,410mAh battery.

LG G7 ThinQ now available for purchase in the US, here’s where to buy it

Friday, June 1st, 2018

LG's latest mainstream device is the G7 ThinQ, a phone that was subject to months of rumors before the official announcement. The G7 isn't particularly special, but it's not necessarily bad either. If you've been wanting to buy it, you can now order the G7 from all major US carriers (except AT&T, who wants to sell you the V35 instead) and several retail stores.

Sprint has the G7 for $792 full price, or $33/month for 18 months on Sprint Flex.

T-Mobile resumes Android 8.0 Oreo rollout for LG V30 and V30+

Wednesday, May 30th, 2018

T-Mobile has resumed its rollout of Android 8.0 Oreo for the LG V30 and V30+ almost three weeks after it was halted. You'll need to be running the latest version of the McAfee Security for T-Mobile app (version 4.9) to get your hands on it.

T-Mobile originally rolled out Oreo for the V30 and V30+ on May 7, giving users the ability to upgrade through the LG Bridge platform, or by manually downloading and installing the OTA package.

Another T-Mobile website bug allowed anyone to access customer info using just a phone number

Saturday, May 26th, 2018

T-Mobile customers: Your data has been put at risk by your carrier, once again. In what seems like copypasta at this point, a security researcher recently found a bug in a publicly discoverable subdomain on T-Mobile's website that gave anyone access to customer data using just a phone number. It's almost like T-Mobile wants to award those bug bounties.

This time around, a not-hidden-enough API in promotool.t-mobile.com, apparently a "Customer Care Portal" for employees, allowed any enterprising individual to access T-Mobile customer data by appending the customer's phone number to the end of the URL — no password required.

Phone tracking firms LocationSmart and Securus under fire for data breaches

Saturday, May 19th, 2018

Securus Technologies is a Texas-based company, specializing in providing and monitoring calls to prison inmates. Securus came into the spotlight earlier this month, when a former Missouri sheriff was found using the company's service to repeatedly to track people without a warrant. The New York Times reports that between 2014 and 2017, former sheriff Cory Hutcheson used the service at least 11 times, allegedly tracking a judge and members of the State Highway Patrol.

T-Mobile pulled a Galaxy S9 and S9+ update more than a month ago, and it’s still not available

Friday, May 18th, 2018

Slow and delayed updates are nothing new for Android devices, but T-Mobile and Samsung seem to be having more issues than usual. Back in April, T-Mobile had to halt the Note 8's Oreo update for several weeks, but it turns out the Galaxy S9 and S9+ had some botched updates of their own. The carrier paused an update in April, and it hasn't restarted more than a month later.

The update in question was just for bug fixes and security patches, so it's not as important as the Note 8's update.

[Update: Coming back on May 13] T-Mobile halted the Note 8 Oreo update 3 weeks ago, and it’s still not available

Friday, May 11th, 2018

Samsung's Oreo updates have been slow to appear, but what else is new? The company promised it was almost done with Oreo updates a few weeks back, and T-Mobile said its Note 8 update was all set. However, you might have noticed your Tmo Note 8 is still running Nougat. That's because T-Mobile pulled the update three weeks ago shortly after announcing it.
