Sony LF-S50G review: Novelty features don’t redeem this expensive Google Assistant speaker

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

In the personal assistance arms race, the two real options for Android users are Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa, and both companies have realized that victory will require ubiquity—not as the final result, but as the means. To that end, each has opened its platform up for third-party hardware, and Sony's (un)imaginatively named LF-S50G takes advantage of Google's Assistant in the same way the first party Google Home does, seasoned with a few unique features like gesture controls and a clock.

Right now on Amazon, you can get a great deal on an Ultimate Ears Megablast WiFi and Bluetooth speaker. On its own, the Megablast costs just $207, which is $93 less than the MSRP of $299. That's a significant saving, and it applies if you add the charging dock too. With it, the price is $247, adding $40 for the extra convenience.

Richard recently reviewed the Megablast alongside its smaller sibling, the Blast, and was impressed with their performance.

[Deal Alert] Anker Soundcore 2 down to $29.99 ($10 off) on Amazon

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

Bluetooth speakers can get fairly pricey, especially ones built for outdoor usage. Anker's Soundcore 2 is an exception, with high-quality 12W speakers in an IPX5-protected casing. Now you can get it for $29.99 from Amazon, a $10 reduction from the usual price.

The Soundcore 2 has gone on sale a few times in the past, but this is the lowest price it has ever been (last time it was $31.99). In addition to water and dust protection, the speaker has a 5,200mAh battery, which Anker says should last for 24 hours of music playback.

Etón Air4 is an expensive $499+ speaker with Chromecast and Apple Airplay

Thursday, April 12th, 2018

Etón is not a brand I'm familiar with and a quick look through the company's current products and Wikipedia page doesn't reveal too much aside from the fact that its products are aimed toward outdoor use and emergency preparedness. However, its new Air4 speaker is a very striking departure from all of that. It's a high-quality indoor speaker with a price that oscillates between $499 and $599 depending on where you look and it supports streaming through both Chromecast and Apple Airplay.

Ultimate Ears BLAST and MEGABLAST review: Great sound comes at a price

Thursday, March 1st, 2018

Those in the market for a Bluetooth speaker in the $100-200 range will surely have heard of Ultimate Ears for the company's popular BOOM 2 and MEGABOOM speakers. But if you're looking for a newer, more premium alternative, Logitech/Ultimate Ears has come out with the BLAST and MEGABLAST - not replacements for the BOOM series, but upmarket stablemates.

Google promoting Home Max on Chrome’s New Tab Page

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

Google's new Home Max speaker is pretty great. It can become deafeningly loud, and includes Google Assistant. The only downside is the price - $400 is quite a lot for a speaker. It looks like Google is trying to sell more of them, because the company has placed a small ad for the Home Max on Chrome's New Tab Page.

Web browsers usually get plenty of angry users when advertising shows up on the New Tab Page, and both Chrome and Firefox have tried it in the past (in Firefox's defense, Mozilla doesn't make billions of dollars in advertising revenue to support the browser).

Atari Speakerhat review: Mediocre wearable tech meets ’80s nostalgia

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

Atari is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic companies in the video game industry. Pong was one of the first arcade games ever, the Atari 2600 computer was wildly popular in the late 70s and early 80s, and the 1985 Atari ST was fairly successful. However, the company began to falter in the 90s, and the poorly-sold Atari Jaguar was the last nail in the coffin. After that, Atari Corporation merged with hard drive manufacturer JTS Corp, who later sold the Atari brand to Hasbro in 1998.

Some are experiencing a rattling or buzzing problem with the Pixel 2 XL’s speakers

Thursday, December 21st, 2017

Google's Pixel 2 XL might be a great phone, but it hasn't been without controversy. Now we can add one more issue to the growing list. For many, one or both of the phone's front-facing speakers suffer from distortion/rattling. In some cases, the problem only seems to crop up at louder volumes, but for others (including us here at AP) it occurs even at lower volumes such as during phone calls.
