Nokia 8 Sirocco kernel source code now available

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

Hot on the heels of the Android Pie update from earlier this month, HMD Global has released the kernel source code for the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Of course, most people won't be able to do much with this, though it might be good news for the few who've unlocked their bootloaders (yes, it's possible).

The Nokia 8 Sirocco, like every other Nokia phone aside from the Nokia 8, has a bootloader that HMD is unwilling to offer unlocking for.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 8.1

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

The recently released Nokia 8.1 (also called Nokia X7 in China) is one of the more powerful Android One devices you can currently buy. HMD Global launched the phone last month with Android Pie and has now published the kernel source code.

The smell of a fresh new source code release

The Nokia 8.1 is a solid mid-range offering, with a Snapdragon 710 chip, a 6.2" 1080p display, and a healthy amount of RAM, battery, and internal storage.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 7 Plus

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

The Nokia 7 Plus is one of the HMD Global's higher-specced phones, although still technically mid-range with its Snapdragon 660 chip and 6" IPS LCD display, it's one of the best Android One phones you can get. The Finnish company has now published the kernel source code.

Sadly, as with all Nokia-branded Android devices, the bootloader is locked so the code won't be much use to any ROM builders. Releasing the code is part of the deal with a GPL phone, and HMD is merely complying.

Android Pie kernel source now available for Moto X4, Moto P30 Play, and Motorola One

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

Motorola is typically quick at releasing kernel source code for its phones. Now the company has released source packages for Pie on three different devices — the X3, P30 Play, and Motorola One.

Motorola has uploaded the kernel source for 'Payton' and 'Deen' to its public GitHub account. 'Payton' is the codename for the Moto X4, which hasn't received an actual Pie update yet. 'Deen' is the codename for the Moto P30 Play, but considering the codename for the Motorola One is "deen_sprout," it's likely the kernel release will work on both devices.

Kernel source codes for Motorola One Power and Moto Z3 Play are now available

Saturday, December 8th, 2018

The Motorola One Power and Moto Z3 Play are fairly recent releases from Motorola, having debuted earlier this year. Both phones have now had their kernel source codes published on GitHub, meaning that custom development for them can now properly begin.

Unlike most Motorola kernel source releases, the Z3 Play's took a while to arrive. We complained about the Moto Z3's source code having taken a bit long to get here, but the Z3 is actually a month newer than the Z3 Play.

Moto G5 kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo is out

Friday, October 12th, 2018

The non-Plus model of the Moto G5 was never released in the US, but for those of you overseas who have one, here's some good news for you. The Android 8.1 Oreo-based kernel source code for the Moto G5, codenamed 'cedric,' has now been published on GitHub, meaning that developers can start cooking.

This news comes after the G5 Plus's source code being released late last month. Now that the G5's code is out as well, developers can build custom ROMs, kernels, and other software for the G5 on 8.1 Oreo.

LG V40’s kernel source code is already available

Saturday, October 6th, 2018

It's not unusual for kernel source codes to be published before phones/updates even debut, but just two days after LG took the wraps off of the V40, the kernel source code for various models has already been published.

Five variants of the V40 (LMV405) are listed on LG's OpenSource Code Distribution site: TA, TAB, TM, TMB, and TS. The file names remind us that this brand-new $1,000 flagship ships with Oreo, which is a shame.

Motorola releases G5 Plus kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo

Friday, September 28th, 2018

You hear us talk a lot about manufacturers releasing the kernel source codes for their devices. Some resist hard, while others just take some time. In the case of the latter, Motorola released the Android 8.1 Oreo sources for the Moto G5 Plus over on its Github.

Though succeeded by the G5S Plus – which had it's 8.1 Oreo kernel sources released a few months ago – the Moto G5 Plus (codename Potter) is still a good budget phone.

Motorola releases Oreo kernel source code for Moto G6 Play and E5 Play

Thursday, August 23rd, 2018

Back in April, Motorola introduced six - yes, six - smartphones simultaneously. Three belonged to the Moto G6 line, and the other three were in the Moto E5 family. The company has now published the Oreo source codes for the Moto G6 Play and E5 Play.

While six phones were announced at that same time, only three arrived in the US. The two Play phones mentioned here are among those. Here are the links you'll need:

One of the GitHub E5 Play entries specifies "james-a," not just "james." We were unable to find any mention of "james-a" anywhere else on the web, though it is possible this is dev-speak for a specific E5 Play model.
