HMD releases Nokia 3 kernel source code

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

HMD Global has released the source code for the Nokia 3. The 3 has become the fourth phone in Nokia's lineup to have its kernel source released, following the 1 and 6, as well as the rather late 8, last month.

The source code allows developers to much more easily build custom software, and it's definitely nice to see. With that being said, HMD still hasn't unlocked any of the Nokia devices' bootloaders, making the source code a lot less useful than it should be.

Motorola releases Moto Z2 Play Oreo kernel source code

Thursday, April 26th, 2018

Lenovo-owned Motorola has definitely passed its glory years, but the company is still pretty good about releasing the kernel sources for the new updates on its phones. The Moto Z2 Play (albus) is up next, with Lenovorola pushing the device's Oreo kernel sources to GitHub.

Having these available will allow developers to make custom ROMs and the like with far greater ease than without them. So if you're developing for the Z2 Play, or thinking about it, Motorola has made your life easier.

HMD Global finally releases Nokia 8 kernel source code

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

Despite doing a pretty good job on keeping its phones up to date, HMD Global has until recently had a bit of trouble with releasing the kernel sources for its devices. But in a "finally" moment, the exclusive manufacturer of the Nokia brand has released the Nokia 8 source codes to the developer community.

Having this code allows developers to start tinkering with custom software for the device(s) in question. These kernel sources for the Nokia 8, which was very well-received by our very own (awesome) Rita, have often been requested by the dev community since the phone launched.

Xiaomi promises to change its ways and release kernel source code within 3 months of device launches

Thursday, April 12th, 2018

Chinese OEM Xiaomi has a poor reputation when it comes to OS updates and the timely release of kernel source code. It took a Twitter backlash and criticism from several tech blogs to get the company to finally release the Nougat source code for the Android One-toting Mi A1. A similarly lengthy wait had to be endured before the Oreo code was be provided last month. Xiaomi has now stated its intention (again) to release kernel source code within three months of a device's launch.

Xiaomi releases Oreo kernel source code for the Mi A1

Saturday, March 17th, 2018

Xiaomi promised that the Mi A1 would receive Oreo by the end of 2017, and the company hit a buzzer-beater by rolling out Android 8.0 to the Android One device on December 30th. But the kernel source code was nowhere to be found, a violation of the GNU General Public License, version 2 (GPLv2), and an affront to the development and enthusiast community. It's about two-and-a-half months late, but Xiaomi has finally released the Android 8.0 Oreo source code for the Mi A1.

Samsung publishes kernel source code for Galaxy S9/S9+ Snapdragon and Exynos models

Thursday, March 15th, 2018

Just as it did after the unveiling of the Galaxy S8/S8+, Samsung has published the kernel sources for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. But this time around, the company has gone ahead and released the code for the Exynos and Snapdragon models at the same time.

Of course, these won't be of much use to the everyday consumer. To a developer, though, this means that custom development can commence.

Samsung releases Oreo kernel source code for the Galaxy S8/S8+

Friday, February 9th, 2018

Android OEMs are required to release the kernel source code every time they push a new Android version to a device. It includes any modifications they've made and its what tinkerers then use to build custom ROMs other mods. Some OEMs are quick to release the code after an update, whereas some drag their heels. In this instance, Samsung has been impeccably fast.

After a thorough beta program, Samsung finally started rolling out Anrdoid 8.0 Oreo to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ yesterday.

Motorola releases Oreo kernel source code for Moto X4

Sunday, January 21st, 2018

Those of you familiar with the GPL will know that manufacturers are required to post any modifications they make to the Android kernel. Motorola does this with all of their phones, including the Nougat-powered Moto X4, but now that Oreo is out for the phone (well, at least the Android One version), the source code for that needs to be posted as well. Lo and behold, it has.

A developer requested the kernel source code for the X4 (codenamed 'payton') about two weeks ago in Motorola's GitHub, and it's finally been granted.

Kernel source code was just released for the Razer Phone

Friday, December 15th, 2017

The lifecycle of device modification usually goes a little like this: a phone gets released with an unlockable bootloader -> that phone's kernel source gets released -> the same phone then gets increased developer attention resulting in custom kernels and ROMs. Today the Razer Phone has hit that intermediate milestone, and the source code for its kernel has been released to the public as per the terms of the GPL.

For most of us this probably isn't a big deal, but if you're an enthusiast that gets excited about rooting and ROMing their devices and you happened to pick up a Razer Phone, this is excellent news.
