Moto G5 kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo is out

Friday, October 12th, 2018

The non-Plus model of the Moto G5 was never released in the US, but for those of you overseas who have one, here's some good news for you. The Android 8.1 Oreo-based kernel source code for the Moto G5, codenamed 'cedric,' has now been published on GitHub, meaning that developers can start cooking.

This news comes after the G5 Plus's source code being released late last month. Now that the G5's code is out as well, developers can build custom ROMs, kernels, and other software for the G5 on 8.1 Oreo.

LG V40’s kernel source code is already available

Saturday, October 6th, 2018

It's not unusual for kernel source codes to be published before phones/updates even debut, but just two days after LG took the wraps off of the V40, the kernel source code for various models has already been published.

Five variants of the V40 (LMV405) are listed on LG's OpenSource Code Distribution site: TA, TAB, TM, TMB, and TS. The file names remind us that this brand-new $1,000 flagship ships with Oreo, which is a shame.

Motorola releases G5 Plus kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo

Friday, September 28th, 2018

You hear us talk a lot about manufacturers releasing the kernel source codes for their devices. Some resist hard, while others just take some time. In the case of the latter, Motorola released the Android 8.1 Oreo sources for the Moto G5 Plus over on its Github.

Though succeeded by the G5S Plus – which had it's 8.1 Oreo kernel sources released a few months ago – the Moto G5 Plus (codename Potter) is still a good budget phone.

Motorola releases Oreo kernel source code for Moto G6 Play and E5 Play

Thursday, August 23rd, 2018

Back in April, Motorola introduced six - yes, six - smartphones simultaneously. Three belonged to the Moto G6 line, and the other three were in the Moto E5 family. The company has now published the Oreo source codes for the Moto G6 Play and E5 Play.

While six phones were announced at that same time, only three arrived in the US. The two Play phones mentioned here are among those. Here are the links you'll need:

One of the GitHub E5 Play entries specifies "james-a," not just "james." We were unable to find any mention of "james-a" anywhere else on the web, though it is possible this is dev-speak for a specific E5 Play model.

HMD publishes Nokia 2.1 kernel source code

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

The Nokia 2.1 was announced back in late May, and it's HMD's new budget offering. With pricing starting at around $115 for an Android Go phone with a 4.000mAh battery, it sounds like a decent deal. HMD has just released the source code for the 2.1, nearly a month after it did so for the 5.1.

HMD is required to release the source code by the GPL. That would ordinarily help with custom ROM and recovery development, but since Nokia refuses to allow its bootloaders to be unlocked, this doesn't really do much good.

Moto G5S Plus kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo is out

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

All manufacturers are required by the GPL to release the kernel source code whenever there's a change to it, which usually happens when a major update is pushed. The Moto G5S Plus, codenamed 'sanders,' has been waiting for its Oreo update for quite a while now, but with news of a soak test occurring in Brazil and this source code's release, it looks like it may be coming soon.

The Moto G5S Plus is the Moto G5 Plus's successor, offering a dual rear camera setup, metal body, and a 5.5" 1080p display.

HMD publishes Nokia 5.1 kernel source code

Monday, July 23rd, 2018

HMD Global may still be refusing to unlock bootloaders, but it's required to release each phone's source code by the GPL. The company has just published the kernel source for the Nokia 5.1, which was announced a little under two months ago.

For those unfamiliar with source code, it allows developers to build custom software like ROMs and custom recoveries more easily. However, because Nokia is refusing to allow its bootloaders to be unlocked, there's really not much that can be done.

Motorola releases 8.1 Oreo kernel source code for Moto X4

Friday, July 6th, 2018

The Moto X4 started receiving Android 8.1 Oreo back in May, and it brought with it a couple of issues. Two months later, Motorola has released the kernel source for that update as it's mandated to do by the GPL whenever there are any modifications to the Android kernel.

What this means is that developers will now have a much easier time making custom ROMs and recoveries for the Moto X4 on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Motorola Moto G6 and G6 Plus kernel source code released

Saturday, June 16th, 2018

With the Moto G6 and G6 Plus slowly becoming more and more widely available, Motorola has published the kernel source code for the Moto G6 and G6 Plus. The G6 Play's source code was released in late April, but it's taken over a month on top of that for the G6 and G6 Plus's for whatever reason.

The Moto G6 goes by codename "Ali," and the G6 Plus by "Evert." The kernel source codes for these two devices will help developers create custom ROMs and recoveries, which enthusiast owners will no doubt want.
