Qualcomm Snapdragon 845: The first benchmark results – compared to Galaxy S8, Pixel 2, OnePlus 5T, and more

Monday, February 12th, 2018

Last week, we attended an event at Qualcomm's corporate headquarters in San Diego to test out the company's latest high-end smartphone chip, the Snapdragon 845. We ran some benchmarks and ate some food. There was probably more eating than benchmarking, if I'm honest.

Full disclosure: Qualcomm paid to fly me out to San Diego, put me up in a nice little hotel for three nights next to their campus, and fed me lots of food and bought me lots of drinks.

OnePlus investigating US carrier deals, will launch next flagship in late Q2

Thursday, January 11th, 2018

OnePlus has gotten where it is by selling unlocked phones directly to consumers at a rapid pace. The sub-$500 OnePlus 5 was only out for around five months before the 5T usurped it. Now, OnePlus is looking into potential carrier deals in the US to move future phones in larger numbers. Speaking of future phones, OnePlus confirms a new phone is coming in a few months.

Selling phones through carriers is still the best way to gain traction in the US.

New commit shows possibility of Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 powered Chromebooks

Friday, December 22nd, 2017

At the unveiling of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 earlier this month, Microsoft and Qualcomm announced "always-connected" Windows 10 notebook PCs with LTE support and batteries that last throughout the day. For Microsoft's part, this new initiative is separate from the previous Windows RT releases, as these systems can seamlessly run x86-64 32-bit x86 apps. A newly discovered commit indicates that Snapdragon 845-powered Chromebooks are being developed as well.

The new commits include the "cheza" board powered by "chipset-qc845." While this would not be the first ARM-powered Chromebook, this would be the first time that a Qualcomm SoC is used to power a Chromebook.

Qualcomm wants to make headphone dongles sound better by giving them Hi-Fi DACs

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

Headphone jacks are on the way out, and Qualcomm is looking to cash in on the situation - while also possibly making your headphones sound less bad over USB-C.

As you know, most smartphones shipping without 3.5mm jacks do come with USB-C dongles to act as adapters for the traditional analog port. Most of those phones don't even contain a headphone amplifier at all, though (to save space and money), so those pieces actually go inside the dongle instead of the phone.

Snapdragon 845 reference phone hands-on: a peek at your next smartphone (kind of)

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

The Snapdragon 845 was announced today, and after the press conference here in Hawaii came to an end this morning, Qualcomm unveiled the next-generation chip's reference platform to journalists.

Reference platforms serve as tools for Qualcomm and its customers (the companies that make phones), and they're usually pretty crude aesthetically. The one Qualcomm has whipped together for its 845 platform is kind of nice, though, big bezels aside. I can't really tell you much about using it - it's running Android and it's filled with diagnostic software and a few tightly-scripted demo applications you won't really care about.

Snapdragon 845 detailed: New GPU and CPU, 30% faster graphics, 30% more efficient

Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

Qualcomm detailed its next-generation chipset, the Snapdragon 845, at a press conference in Hawaii this morning. The chip features a ground-up redesign of the company's Kryo CPU (now the Kryo 385) and Adreno GPU, marking a major evolution of the platform. The changes to the new Adreno 630 GPU will result in 30% faster graphics performance, and Qualcomm anticipates the platform as a whole will be up to 30% more power-efficient than Snapdragon 835, a chip that has already proven to be excellent on battery life.
