OnePlus 6 and 6T wrecking audio quality by using the wrong mic in some apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

The OnePlus 6T may have been our favorite phone of 2018, but it wasn't without its problems. Recently, we reported that OnePlus phones appear to be resetting battery optimization settings randomly, but it appears that OnePlus 6 and 6T may also have some good, old-fashioned microphone troubles, too: Many are experiencing issues with call and recording quality in third-party apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Reports are widespread, going back to the middle of last year.

Snapchat shed 2 million more users in Q3, but there is hope

Friday, October 26th, 2018

If you're a regular reader, you probably know how most of us feel about Snapchat. I actually used to use it pretty often, but as the app became increasingly bloated and sluggish, my friends and I defected to other services or just stopped altogether. Q3 financials are in, and although Snapchat lost a further two million users, there are some signs of a recovery.

As reported by TechCrunch, active users fell by one 1% to 186 million, which isn't exactly a small user base.

Snapchat introduces Snap Originals, exclusive shows made for its platform

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

Stories and original content are the two pillars of any social network nowadays. After YouTube Originals, IGTV, Facebook Watch, and others, Snap Inc. is jumping into the same waters and hoping to get enough exclusive content to grip users' attention further.

Snap Originals — the unoriginal name for the service — are launching now and accessible from Snapchat's Discover page or through search. Viewers will be able to watch these videos, share them with friends (with Lenses and Filters), as well as step into new Show Portals by swiping up on a scene.

Snapchat’s Android overhaul is now rolling out to a wider audience, but some features are still missing

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Snapchat's Android redesign started cropping up for some users a few weeks ago with the 10.40 beta. By switching on "Snapchat Alpha" in settings, users were able to gain access to the new, much smoother version of the app, announced roughly a year ago in November 2017. The overhauled Android Snapchat was built from the ground up to replace the current app, which has long faced criticism for slow, choppy performance.

Snapchat now lets you buy products on Amazon by taking pictures of them

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

The Snapchat app is still a dumpster fire, but now it's a dumpster fire that can look up products on Amazon. While work continues on the revamped Android application, Snapchat has decided to add Amazon searching to the camera screen. Because that's totally what users want, right?

The new feature is slowly rolling out to all users on Android and iOS. When you hold your phone in front of a product or barcode and tap the screen, Snapchat will attempt to look up the item on Amazon.

Snap Inc. releases second generation Spectacles in two new styles for $200

Thursday, September 6th, 2018

It's been less than three months since Snap Inc. introduced its second generation Spectacles, but the company is now iterating with two new styles for its video-recording eyewear. The new designs, dubbed Nico and Veronica, look more like regular sunglasses and would pass off inconspicuously if you didn't notice the two large circles on each side.

Both Nico and Veronica come only in black-on-black color styles with polarized lenses, unlike the original design which was also available in ruby and sapphire.

Not to be outdone by its closest competitor, Instagram, Snapchat has rolled out an update to its app on the beta channel that adds two important Android Oreo features: adaptive icons and notification channels.

If you install the latest v10.40 beta of Snapchat, you'll find that the icon is now adaptive (properly executed, no white dinner plate background) and changes along with the rest of your icons to take a round, square, squircle, or teardrop shape.

Sunday, August 19th, 2018

Back in November of last year, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel announced that a new Android app was being built from the ground up. It's been almost a year since then, but we're finally seeing some movement. In fact, the new Snapchat Alpha can actually be enabled right now, so long as your device has root access.

Snapchat lost three million users in Q2 2018

Wednesday, August 8th, 2018

Snap Inc hasn't been doing great, to say the least. The company's results for the first quarter of 2018 were below expectations, and now the Q2 earnings report has been released. During the period from April 1 to June 30, Snap Inc received $262 million in revenue, with a net loss of $353 million.

The most interesting aspect of the report is Snapchat's monthly user count, which dropped from 191 million in Q1 to 188 million in Q2.

Snapchat is getting new lenses that recognize and react to speech

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

Technology always trickles down to less and less important uses over time. Case in point: speech recognition. It was, at one time, futuristic and incredible that computers could understand us, but now it's just kind of a given. In keeping with its trajectory of increasing mundanity, speech recognition has made its way to perhaps the most frivolous use case of all: Snapchat lenses. (They're actually pretty neat, though.)

The new lenses react to the things you say in a variety of ways.
