Mobvoi unveils two updated Wear OS smartwatches: Ticwatch E2 and S2

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Chinese AI firm Mobvoi has been a shining light in the generally underwhelming Android Wear/Wear OS space, and today it's announcing two new products. The TicWatch E2 and S2 (standing for Express and Sport) are follow-ups to the company's most affordable smartwatches, with updated designs, bigger batteries, but still Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100.

While it's disappointing not to get the latest silicon, it's understandable given the likely low price points of these models and it didn't stop the TicWatch Pro from performing well when I reviewed it.

The best wearable devices you can buy right now (Winter 2018)

Monday, December 24th, 2018

Smartwatches haven't been the smashing success that many manufacturers hoped they would be, but that doesn't mean all of them are bad or useless. Not everyone needs or wants a screen on their wrist, but for those of us who like tracking workouts and responding to notifications without reaching for a phone, they can be great tools.

We've put together a small list of our favorite wearables, from the fitness-oriented Fitbit Versa to Samsung's flagship Tizen smartwatch.

Dark Sky brings hyperlocal weather information to Wear OS

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Checking the weather is one of the features I use most on my phone. For years, I had a widget dedicated to just that on my homescreen, a layout I abandoned only a short time ago. When it comes to wearables, you have a couple of options in this area. Some watches come with pre-built faces that include weather info, you can build your own in something like Pujie, or install a separate app.

Facer v5.0 adds new watch face partners, a premium subscription, and more

Thursday, December 6th, 2018

What good is a smartwatch without some fancy custom watch faces to go with it? Facer has been one of the best sources for cusotmizable watch faces since the days before Google supported third-party watch faces. The app is forging ahead, even as interest in smartwatches has waned. The big v5.0 update adds more designers, including some traditional watchmakers. There's also a new premium subscription option that includes the full catalog of watch faces.

Most of Fossil’s Gen 4 smartwatches are $199 (up to $76 off)

Monday, December 3rd, 2018

Fossil makes some of the most handsome Wear OS devices around, with simple, relatively traditional styling. From right now through the end of the week, many of their latest watches are on sale for $199. Depending on which you're interested in, that's a savings of up to $76.

To get it out of the way, no, this sale does not include the new Fossil Sport (and it's sold out besides). But it does include 13 different variants of Explorist and Venture watches, which are normally $255 or $275, depending on which band you're after.

Fossil Sport review: The best Wear OS has to offer

Monday, December 3rd, 2018

I have been a user of Android Wear/Wear OS practically since it was released. I bought a Samsung Gear Live a few months after it became available, followed by a Moto 360 and an original LG G Watch. When those models became unusable for one reason or another, I purchased a refurbished Huawei Watch that I use to this day.

I've wanted to upgrade for a while now, but once rumors of a Pixel Watch subsided, I decided to get the first affordable watch with the fancy new Wear 3100 processor.

Best Buy has discounted the Fitbit Ionic to $200 ($70 off) and the Versa to $150 ($50 off)

Wednesday, November 21st, 2018

It's a rough time to be interested in wearables to pair with your Android phone. The updated Qualcomm Wear 3100 is still slow to appear in Wear OS devices, and Samsung's Tizen watches are very expensive with poor app support. Then there's Fitbit. These fitness-oriented smartwatches don't have as many features as the others, but they get much better battery life. You pay a bit for the name, but Best Buy has both Fitbit smartwatches discounted right now.
