Blu announces the $50 X Link smartwatch with 2G wireless connectivity

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Blu is known for selling inexpensive phones that punch above their weight, but the company's new smartwatch seems like a very odd product. The X Link has a 1.1-inch round display, no apps, and 2G wireless connectivity. So, why would you want that? Well, it's only $50.

In case it wasn't clear, this is not a Wear OS device. It's running a much simpler OS that has basic smartwatch features like notification sync, step tracking, and heart rate.

Wear OS is in trouble, and only Google can save it

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Android Wear seemed like the right product at the right time when Google announced it back in 2014. Smartwatches were just starting to take off with products like the Pebble awakening our latent desire for wrist computers. Meanwhile, Apple's long-rumored smartwatch was still unannounced. After four years, dozens of watches, and a name change, Wear OS is in a tough spot.

Google seems to be out of ideas, and consumers have increasingly purchased watches from other companies.

The TicWatch Pro will have a transparent secondary display to save power

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Most of the companies making Wear OS devices right now are fashion brands and lifestyle companies. They're not exactly the most innovative when it comes to consumer electronics. Mobvoi is trying something new, though. After launching its first-gen TicWatch hardware last year, the company just announced the TicWatch Pro with an interesting transparent LCD to save power in ambient mode.

Internally, the TicWatch Pro is a standard Wear OS watch. There's a round OLED display that does all the usual smartwatch things like show you notifications, display custom watch faces, and so on.

Martian Watches shuts down, remaining mVoice G2 watches will not be shipped

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Martian Watches is a wearables company founded in 2007, most known for its mVoice line of hybrid smartwatches. We reviewed the original mVoice in early 2017, and later that year, the company launched a Kickstarter for the second-gen model. Unfortunately, Martian is now shutting down, after it failed to raise enough funds to complete production of the mVoice G2.

Martian published an update to G2 backers yesterday, and reader Dan has kindly provided us with the text:

Dear Backers,

As we advised in this last update, it is with great sadness and regret that we have decided that we have no other choice but to shut down operations and close the company.

AsteroidOS, an open-source Wear OS alternative, now available as a stable release

Tuesday, May 15th, 2018

A few years ago, a French computer science student named Florent Revest undertook a project to keep Android Wear smartwatches from dying of obsolescence. That project is called AsteroidOS, built entirely on GNU/Linux libraries and technologies, and in its current state, it's fairly basic. Even so, for all fans of open source software out there, this is pretty damn great.

This is the stable release of v1.0 and it works on a few select watches: Asus ZenWatch, Asus ZenWatch 2, Asus ZenWatch 3, LG G Watch, LG Watch Urbane, LG G Watch R, and Sony Smartwatch 3.

Qualcomm will launch new processor for wearables this fall

Wednesday, May 9th, 2018

Despite frequent updates, Wear OS (formerly Android Wear) is definitely stagnating from a hardware perspective. Most watches use Qualcomm's Wear 2100 processor, which is over two years old at this point. At long last, the company is working on a brand new mobile chipset for wearables, which will arrive this fall.

The new chip was confirmed by Qualcomm's senior director of wearables, Pankaj Kedia. It will be revealed this fall, alongside a 'lead' smartwatch using the chipset.

New LG Wear OS watch shows up at FCC

Monday, May 7th, 2018

Documentation concerning a new Wear OS watch manufactured by LG has appeared on the Federal Communication Commission's website. The listing doesn't reveal a whole lot, but the watch is described as a "portable wrist device" with a model number of LM-W315. It's possible the filing is for LG's rumored "hybrid" watch that's said to feature both physical hands and an LCD display.

While none of the accessible documents mention Wear OS or Android by name, one does contain screenshots that give it away.

Google rolls out new Assistant features to Wear OS

Thursday, May 3rd, 2018

Google ignored Android Wear for a long time, but now it's got a new name and some new features. The next step in Google's quest to keep Wear OS from dying is to enhance Assistant. In the coming days, you'll be able to access more Assistant Actions and get contextual suggestions when you interact with the watch. It'll also talk, at least sometimes.

You can already pull up Assistant with a long-press of the crown button to ask questions.

[Deal Alert] Fitbit Ionic down to $240 on eBay ($60 off)

Friday, April 20th, 2018

The world of smartwatches is starting to dry up, and as sad as that is, I can't say that I'm surprised. However, there remain a few diamonds in the rough, one of which is on sale over on eBay. The Fitbit Ionic, in all three color variations, is going for $239.99, a nice $60 off.

While not really a typical smartwatch – as compared to a Wear OS or Gear device – the Ionic nonetheless received a very fair rating from Ryan, who re-reviewed the wearable after it had some software updates.
