The LG Watch W7 is a neat proof of concept, but who the heck would actually want to buy one?

Thursday, October 4th, 2018

LG has just launched its latest smartwatch, and she is a weird one: the LG Watch W7. Unlike the company's past models like the Watch Style and Watch Sport, the W7 marries a circular LCD with a pair of mechanical hands — just like you'd find on an ancient dumbwatch. The idea's based around some sensible thoughts, like having the analog system offer battery life that extends into the months-long range, but between absent mainstream smartwatch features, a steep price tag, and those dang physical hands obscuring the smartwatch screen, it's difficult to pin down exactly who this watch might appeal to.

Huawei Watch GT leak points to big battery and small price tag

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

Huawei hasn't released a smartwatch since the spring of 2017, but all signs point to its imminent return. After swinging by the FCC for certification, the Huawei Watch GT has shown up in a new leak. There's an image of the watch, as well as a few details on the pricing and specs. It looks like a rather compelling smartwatch, but Huawei is still stubbornly avoiding the original Huawei Watch aesthetic.

Samsung Galaxy Watch ‘Golf Edition’ now on sale in South Korea

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Do you like to go golfing? Is the normal Samsung Galaxy Watch just not doing it for you? If so, Samsung has the solution - a special 'Golf Edition' of its latest smartwatch. It's pre-loaded with the Smart Caddie application, which displays geographical information about a desired course.

Samsung says the watch was developed in collaboration with Golfzon Deca, a golf rangefinder manufacturer in South Korea. It can keep track of your shots, and the battery should last long enough for three rounds of golf (54 holes).

New Huawei Watch with ‘scientific sleep tracking’ passes through the FCC

Saturday, September 29th, 2018

The original Huawei Watch was one of the best Wear OS devices ever produced, but its successor was a disappointment by comparison. Huawei said earlier this year that a new smartwatch "won't be released anytime soon," but it appears a new model is now in the final stages of development. A new watch with the model number 'FTN-B19' just passed through the FCC.

The filing is extremely sparse on hardware details, unless you're super interested in wireless transmissions.

Wear OS 2.1 now rolling out, features long-awaited redesign

Saturday, September 29th, 2018

Earlier this month, Google announced a complete redesign for Wear OS. The update was designed to make everything more accessible - notifications no longer take up an entire screen, swiping left on the main screen takes you to Google Assistant, and swiping right displays health data. The quick settings has also been improved, with new shortcuts to Google Pay and Find My Phone.

Withings is back with the Steel HR Sport, a hybrid smartwatch with advanced multisport tracking

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

Although its watches don't run Wear OS, we've followed Withings closely for a few reasons. For one, it makes beautiful minimalist watches with some smart fitness tracking features added in (I own an Activité Steel and I love it). The French company has also been in the news a lot due to Nokia acquiring it, turning it into its Digital Health Division, and then selling it back to its co-founder.

Samsung Galaxy Watch review: A competent smartwatch you probably shouldn’t buy right now

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Samsung was among the first large tech companies to launch a smartwatch, and it ran Android before Android Wear existed. Samsung's interest in Android-powered wearables had waned since then. Now, it's all about Tizen despite recent rumors to the contrary. The Galaxy Watch drops the "Gear" branding, but it keeps Tizen. It looks like a real watch, like all of Samsung's recent models. Samsung is really embracing the watch aesthetic this time around, going so far as to make the device tick when you look at the watch face.

Google Pay on Wear OS works in Germany

Monday, September 3rd, 2018

As we've learned over the past few years, having a Google service available in your country isn't enough to use it on all your devices. Google Pay, for example, is supported for in-store payments in twenty countries, but only if you're using your phone to make the transaction. If you have a Wear OS smartwatch, however, the Google Pay app won't show up on the watch unless you're in a few countries.

Casio’s new Pro Trek Wear OS watch is a little less chunky but just as tough

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018

Casio's Pro Trek line of smart watches started in 2016 with the WSD-F10, a bulky, expensive Android Wear device with aesthetics and a feature set slanted at the outdoorsy market. The company followed up in 2017 with the WSD-F20, a refinement on the concept. Now, Casio is back at it with the WSD-F30, which is less chunky, but still rugged (and expensive).

The WSD-F30 has all the bells and whistles of its older siblings, like compliance to the MIL-STD-810G durability standard, offline navigation using locally-stored maps, and a 1.2-inch dual-layer display design that allows for a battery saving mode that severely limits functionality but boosts battery life to up to 30 days.
