Google Assistant might come to Samsung smart TVs in 2019

Smart TVs with functional voice assistants are rare, at least outside of models equipped with Android TV. Bixby arrived on Samsung's TVs earlier this year, and according to a report from Variety, Google Assistant might be joining the party.

Citing sources familiar with Samsung's plans, Variety claims that Samsung is working with Google to bring Assistant to its TVs. The functionality could be announced as early as next month, possibly at CES 2019.

AI is not limited to simply phones and speakers anymore as TV manufacturers continue to add extra capabilities to their flatscreens. Smart TVs are essentially mini computers running operating systems such as Tizen, webOS, and of course Android TV. Google has made it possible for manufacturers to integrate Google Assistant into their products even if they don’t use Android TV, something LG has been doing this year. Until recently, the AI was limited to English, but this is beginning to change.

OnePlus has never ventured outside of the smartphone market, though it came close to releasing a smartwatch. This is now changing, as OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has announced that a TV product is in development.

"We want to bring the home environment to the next level of intelligent connectivity," Lau said, "To do this, we are building a new product of OnePlus’ premium flagship design, image quality and audio experience to more seamlessly connect the home. We call it: OnePlus TV."

No other concrete details were included in the announcement.
