[We did it!] Trusted Places has returned to Smart Lock

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

We reported yesterday that trusted places — Android's method for keeping your device unlocked when it's in certain locations such as your home — was no longer an option in Smart Lock settings. But surprise: it's back! Is this our doing? Well, no, probably not.

Comments on a Google+ post about the feature's return say it reappeared after an update to Google Play Services (which you can grab the most recent version of at APK Mirror).

Trusted Places seems to have been removed as a Smart Lock option

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018

Smart Lock, a feature that lets Android users specify conditions under which their devices will unlock without requiring the usual fingerprint, PIN, or pattern authentication, now has one less use case. Trusted Places could previously set a phone or tablet to remain unlocked when it was in a trusted place, like at home, but that option seems to have disappeared.

Google said it was investigating wonky Trusted Places behavior last April, and the following month, said inconsistencies would be fixed in an upcoming version of Play Services.

Monday, March 26th, 2018

Nest made both its Nest Hello smart doorbell and its Nest x Yale Lock available earlier this month. The Nest Hello went up for sale on the Google Store about a week ago, and now it's the Nest x Yale Lock's turn. The keyless lock can now be purchased for $279 from Google's storefront.

The Nest x Yale Lock finally arrived this month after massive delays, and its main differentiator from other smart locks is that it doesn't have a keyhole anywhere.

NBC app gets Android Smart Lock support to make using your NBC Profile even easier

Thursday, March 1st, 2018

Passwords are a necessary nuisance in our modern digital lives: they help keep our accounts and personal data safe, but they're a hassle to keep track of and type out every time you need to log in somewhere. Android's Smart Lock for Passwords makes everything much easier by letting users automatically logging in on Android, as long as the password is synced to their Google account. Somewhat unfortunately, though, each app has to be updated to work with Smart Lock, so support isn't as ubiquitous as one could hope. Thankfully, many developers eventually do add support for Smart Lock, and the NBC app is just the latest one on that list.

[Deal Alert] August Smart Lock 2nd gen down to $117 at Amazon and Best Buy, and $99 in-store at Walmart

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

"A smart lock?! No, I'll never trust the security of my home to anything smart!" That was my thought until I sat down and considered the potential benefits: unlocking remotely for someone you trust (children who get home early from school, or visiting relatives waiting for you while you're stuck in traffic) or in case of emergency (fire, water leak), locking remotely if you forgot to or think you may have forgotten, checking the log of activity and being notified in case of suspicious unlocks, and the mere fact of using your keys less means you're less likely to lose or misplace them.
