Google Home Hub smart display leaked ahead of October event, no camera in sight

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018

Google announced Assistant would work on displays a while back, but so far only third-parties have launched hardware. A new leak suggests Google is aiming to launch its own Assistant smart display called the Home Hub. Some leaked renders purport to show a device that looks like the offspring of a Chromebook and a Google Home speaker.

MySmartPrice claims to have renders of the hardware as well as screens of the official product specifications.

JBL Link View review: Great sound from JBL, but Smart Displays still have a long way to go

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018

Smart displays aren't for everyone. They're not exactly tablets, but they look like ones and are both less and more useful, depending on how you look at them. With far superior sound and always listening mics, they act as a smart speaker for your home; but without real apps or a fully functional browser, you hit some roadblocks while using them and wish they could do just a little bit more.

Tip: Hide personal results from your Smart Display if you don’t want to spoil surprises or share your content recommendations

Saturday, September 15th, 2018

Having a Google Assistant Smart Display, such as the LenovoJBL Link ViewLG ThinQ WK9, is very convenient around the house. But if you don't pay attention, you may end up with unwanted privacy concerns because of the mere fact that these displays don't differentiate between people looking at them. They know voices and will only respond to you, but they don't know faces. If there's a personal card on the homescreen, anyone can read it or tap it to see more.

Tip: You can video call your Smart Display at home from your phone (with both on the same Duo account)

Sunday, September 9th, 2018

If you have one of the fancy new Assistant Smart Displays, be it the already available Lenovo or the soon-to-be-released JBL Link View, odds are you're going to set up Duo on it and use it for video calls. One neat feature that you may not be aware of, though, is that you can video call your display from your phone, with both set up to use the same Duo account.

Tip: If you can’t video call your contacts on Duo via Assistant (or Smart Displays), try saving their numbers as ‘+ country code’

Saturday, September 1st, 2018

A few weeks ago, the Google Duo team rolled out the option to place a video call through Assistant. All you had to say was "Ok Google, video call contact_name" and Duo would open up and make the call to that person. However, at the time, I thought the feature wasn't live for me. Assistant would tell me it's calling the correct person, Duo would open, but it would stay on the main screen, not placing the call.

Google could launch its own Assistant smart display this year

Friday, August 17th, 2018

Assistant-powered displays are a thing now, and they may actually be a pretty good thing. However, Google itself hasn't announced any smart display products. That could change later this year, according to a new report.

Sources tell the Nikkei Asian Review that Google is on track to launch an Assistant smart display that would compete with the Amazon Echo Show in time for the holiday season. It will allegedly be part of the Google Home family, offering similar functionality to the new Lenovo smart display. Google reportedly wants to ship 3 million of the devices, which would be a considerable number for smart displays.

Lenovo Smart Display review: The best new kitchen appliance since the dishwasher

Sunday, August 12th, 2018

So-called smart speakers became the darling of every big tech company in the last three years, with Amazon, Google, and Apple all trying to push their digital assistants as a complementary and indispensable part of their locked-in ecosystems. Incremental advancement continues, and the Assistant-powered responses to Amazon's trailblazing, screen-equipped Echo Show have started to land, the first one being this: Lenovo's Smart Display. And far from just being an interesting first try, Google's Assistant on a screen has already become an indispensable part of my home, especially in the kitchen.

The Google Home and Home Mini have operated like decentralized, Assistant-powered satellites.

It's Friday afternoon and that means there's probably going to be a Google app update. Details are a bit thin with this update as most of the topics are little more than breadcrumbs, but we'll take a look at a new feature called the Memory Aid Locker, the first substantial pieces of a Top Apps view, and a cut-and-dry implementation of Google Translate for smart displays.
