The 10″ Lenovo Smart Display is $150 ($100 off) for Costco members

Monday, January 14th, 2019

We're pretty big fans of smart displays here at Android Police, and Lenovo's in particular is a very nice option. It's probably the best-looking of all available models (if you're down with asymmetry, that is), and Ryne called it the best new kitchen appliance since the dishwasher. Right now, Costco members can pick up the larger of the two models for a hefty $100 off.

This 10-incher provides ample screen space for whatever smart home stuff you might get up to, and is particularly nice for watching videos or flipping through your Google Photos gallery.

Innit now has a Google Assistant Smart Display action to aid you in the kitchen

Friday, January 11th, 2019

A key feature of Smart Displays such as the Google Home Hub is that they can be used to help you prepare dinner by presenting hands-free, step-by-step recipes for you to follow. This is open to developers if they want to add their own actions, just like BuzzFeed's Tasty did recently. Now, Innit is getting in on the act.

All you have to do is say "Hey Google, talk to Innit" and it will bring up a customized interface offering a variety of kitchen assistance.

Google Assistant gains flight check-ins, hotel booking, Interpreter Mode, and broadens lockscreen support

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Google Assistant is the belle of the ball at CES 2019, with hardware partnerships popping up left, right, and center. What better time, then, for Google to announce a slew of shiny new features for the increasingly (artificially) intelligent helper? Among the updates comes flight check-ins, hotel booking, a new language interpreter mode, and the extension of Assistant on the lockscreen to all Android phones.

Assistant's new travel features are U.S.-focused for now, with the flight check-in feature rolling out for domestic United Airlines flights first, and the hotel booking tool similarly limited to Americans through hotel and travel partners including Choice Hotels, InterContinental Hotels, Priceline, Expedia, and Travelclick.

Lenovo’s Smart Clock is an adorably tiny display with Google Assistant

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Amazon unveiled the clock-sized Echo Spot last year, as a smaller alternative to the Echo Show. We haven't seen any similarly-sized devices running Google's smart display platform, but Lenovo just unveiled something similar — the Smart Clock.

The Smart Clock is a tiny smart display, with a 4-inch IPS screen and a 6W speaker. The unit is wrapped in a Google Home-like gray fabric, and functions as a Google Assistant speaker.

Costco members can pick up the LG ThinQ View smart display for $170 ($80 off)

Monday, January 7th, 2019

Smart displays are a neat product category; pairing the convenience of smart speakers with visual components is a surprisingly robust experience. In my review of the LG ThinQ View, I found that while its general smart display-ness is nice, there isn't enough special about it to justify its $250 MRSP. A hefty discount can make a real difference, though, and that's just what Costco members can get on the device.

KitchenAid Smart Display has a 10″ display, IPX5 rating, and Yummly

Sunday, January 6th, 2019

After seeing Google Assistant Smart Displays from Lenovo, JBL, LG, and Google, it's now time for another big electronics maker to join the fray: KitchenAid. Wait, what? OK, see, there's a simple explanation: KitchenAid is owned by Whirlpool. No, still doesn't make sense. Well, Ryne called the Lenovo Smart Display "the best new kitchen appliance since the dishwasher" and our best guess is KitchenAid read that and thought, " Nah, we can do better."

Alright, all jokes aside, this KitchenAid Smart Display makes sense in a way.

LG ThinQ View smart display review: It’s $250, loud, and kind of ugly

Saturday, January 5th, 2019

Google Assistant-powered smart displays all do pretty much the same things, and, except for the Google Home Hub, run identical software on similar internal hardware. That uniformity leaves device-specific critiques to nuances in external hardware, and while LG's ThinQ View display doesn't outright fail in any respect, for $250, its functional similarity to cheaper, prettier devices makes it a bad buy.

The Good

Sound The ThinQ View's big speakers deliver big sound.

[Update: Distribution paused] Lenovo is rolling out Smart Display R5 update with improvements for lights, home tiles, and more

Thursday, December 27th, 2018

The Lenovo Smart Display was our first taste of Assistant's screen-first experience, but the Home Hub came out more recently with new features. The other smart displays aren't dead, though. Lenovo is rolling out the "R5" update today that adds some refinements and new features to the display.

How to hide, favorite, and share photos from your Google Home Hub (and other Smart Displays)

Saturday, December 15th, 2018

One of the best uses of the Google Home Hub, or any another Smart Display (Lenovo's or the JBL Link View), is as a smart digital photo album. I've already shared with you the steps to set this up plus tips to make the most of Live Albums, but there are a few new hidden capabilities that make it easier to interact with the photos once they're showing on your Smart Display.
