Nokia 5 and 6 start receiving August security patch on the same day as Nexus/Pixel devices

Tuesday, August 8th, 2017

We at AP usually don't cover security patches for non-Google devices, as those are released for different models constantly, but we found this pretty interesting: Nokia began pushing the August 2017 security patch to the Nokia 5 and 6 yesterday, the very same day that Google did. Impressive work, HMD Global.

BlackBerry releases the monthly security patches at this time consistently, but since the whole company is security-focused, it'd be a bit of an embarrassment if anything else were true.

Monday, May 1st, 2017

It's the first day of May, and Google is wasting no time releasing the May 2017 factory images and OTAs for Nexus and Pixel devices. Just like last month, the security update has reached the Pixel/Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9.

For reference, here is the build information for each device:

  • Pixel/Pixel XL: N2G47O
  • Pixel/Pixel XL (Deutsche Telekom): N2G47T
  • Pixel/Pixel XL (Verizon): NHG47L
  • Pixel C: N2G47O
  • Nexus 6P: N2G47O
  • Nexus 5X: N2G47O
  • Nexus 6: N6F27C
  • Nexus Player: N2G47R
  • Nexus 9: N4F27B

If you're one of the people who updated to the early May 2017 build that Google accidentally published, it seems to have the same build number as the final release.

Google accidentally pushed a Dogfood test build of the May 2017 security update to the Pixel XL

Tuesday, April 18th, 2017

Google seems to have a problem with keeping testers and customers apart. Last month, the company pushed an unfinished Google Drive for Windows update, causing Drive to break for thousands of users. Now Google has accidentally released a confidential build of the May 2017 security update to normal Pixel XL owners.

We've received a few reports of the update so far, and our own Artem has received the update on his Pixel XL as well.
