Blackberry has a niche, and it's not giving it up any time soon. If you want a phone with a keyboard, you'll probably buy one of the TCL-build Blackberry phones like the new KEY2. However, that phone is pretty spendy at $650. If you don't mind making a few sacrifices in your quest for a keyboard, Best Buy is having a KEYone fire sale.

The KEYone launched at $549 in 2017, which wasn't an unreasonable price.

Samsung and LG warn of profit decline in fourth quarter as smartphone market stagnates

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Turns out Apple is not the only company expecting to disappoint investors with its next set of quarterly results — Samsung and LG are in the same boat. Whether or not it's for precisely the same reasons is unclear, but it seems a plateauing smartphone market is at least partially to blame for all three companies' guidance misses.

In Samsung's case, the tech giant estimated its operating profit for the three months ended December was approximately 10.8 trillion Korean won (approximately $9.67 billion), which is roughly 29 percent down year-over-year and about 18 percent less than the 13.2 trillion won predicted by analysts.

August Smart Lock on sale for $100 ($50 off) at Amazon

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Did you lock the door? Are you sure? The only way to be positive is to go and check, and walking is such a hassle. A smart lock like the one offered by August can fix that. It's on sale today on Amazon for $99.99, which is $50 less than MSRP.

The August lock is unique among smart door locks because it doesn't replace your existing deadbolt. It just attaches on top of the lock to open it manually when triggered.

HTC plans smartphone sales ‘reboot’ in 2019

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

HTC was the first Android device maker, and it remained one of the market leaders for years. Its recent performance hasn't been stellar, though. After a long line of lackluster quarters, HTC president Darren Chen promises improvements in 2019. Apparently, HTC is aiming for a sales "reboot" by focusing on high-end and mid-range phones.

That plan sounds pretty vague, which is probably the intention. Chen mentioned the U12+ has sold better than expected, and HTC hopes to continue building on that success with similar flagship phones in 2019.

Samsung Gear IconX (2018) on sale for $130 ($70 off)

Monday, December 17th, 2018

The age of wires is over, but true wireless earbuds are expensive. One of the better sets of earbuds is slightly cheaper today, though. Samsung's Gear IconX (2018) launched at $200 before coming down a bit over time. Today, they're on sale for $124.95-129.99, the lowest we've ever seen them.

The IconX are "fitness-oriented" earbuds with integrated heart rate and step counting, but they're perfectly capable for non-exercise usage, too. They're lightweight and stay put in your ear, and the sound quality is solid despite the lack of AptX.
