Roku Premiere is now available, offering 4K streaming for $40

Monday, October 8th, 2018

The streaming hardware industry is a highly competitive place. No sooner had Roku introduced its Premiere 4K player in late September for a market-beating $40, Amazon introduced the Fire Stick 4K for a mere $10 more, with support for all three major HDR standards (HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision) plus Dolby Atmos for sound. But while the Premiere only offers HDR10 and is a bit bigger than a streaming stick, many prefer its user interface and remote design.

[Deal Alert] The Roku Streaming Stick is $35 ($15 off) on Amazon

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

Roku's little streamer that could, the Roku Streaming Stick, is down to impulse buy territory. The diminutive device is just $35 on Amazon right now, bringing it down to the normal price of the base-model Chromecast and making it a much more appealing buy.

In his review, our own Corbin came away impressed by the Roku Streaming Stick, praising the device's performance. The little dongle matches the form factor of the first-gen Chromecast pretty closely, being a stick (obviously) that hides behind your TV, hanging out of an HDMI input and drawing its power from a USB port.

Google Play Movies & TV on Roku is getting an update with a new look, better browsing, and more

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Google Play Movies & TV's Roku channel is getting a face lift. The new channel looks a little like YouTube's TV web wrapper, with content filling most of the screen and navigation on the left. "The entire experience has been redesigned to put the focus on content above all else," Google said in a blog post.

In addition to its new, sleek, and content-centric aesthetic, the channel has gained a revamped TV page in place of the old My TV Shows page that offers suggestions for what to watch next.

Sunday, April 1st, 2018

April Fools' day is almost upon us, but each year at least a few companies are unable to restrain themselves, pushing out their pranks early. Google's various divisions do a decent job each year. Last year's Google Gnome was a pretty good one, and the Maps team's 2014 Pokemon prank was a memorable one. OnePlus even does a good job.

It can be tough keeping track, though, so let us handle the work while you enjoy the jokes.

YouTube TV is now live for both Rokus and Apple TVs

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

YouTube TV looks like a pretty sweet deal for those in supported markets. But, there are a few drawbacks. Most notable among them used to be device support, popular set-top streaming devices like Rokus and Apple TVs didn't have apps to support the service. If that was holding you back from being a YouTube TV subscriber, you should be happy to hear that Google just rolled out apps for each.

For the uninitiated, YouTube TV is Google's streaming television service that provides you with a sort of basic cable package for $35, with limited à la carte options available on top of that.
