Pocket gets a makeover in v7.0 and improves listening feature

Thursday, October 11th, 2018

Since it was acquired by Mozilla last year, Pocket has continued to be regularly updated with useful new features. Today's update to version 7.0.1.2 is the biggest for some time, and it comes with a visual refresh and a new listening experience — Pocket is trying to be more like a podcast app.

The ability to listen to content you might normally read is growing in popularity, especially as we can save time by listening while on the move or doing some other task.

Maps on Android Auto is getting a new layout and Material makeover

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

When you're hopping into your car and starting up navigation with Google Maps, you might be in for a surprise as the UI is getting some pretty significant changes. This isn't just about adding rounded corners or tweaking some colors, a few parts of the UI have been moved around and behave a bit differently, so your muscle memory might work against you for a little while as you get adjusted.

Snapchat’s Android overhaul is now rolling out to a wider audience, but some features are still missing

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Snapchat's Android redesign started cropping up for some users a few weeks ago with the 10.40 beta. By switching on "Snapchat Alpha" in settings, users were able to gain access to the new, much smoother version of the app, announced roughly a year ago in November 2017. The overhauled Android Snapchat was built from the ground up to replace the current app, which has long faced criticism for slow, choppy performance.

Google Assistant’s new Material visual responses start rolling out to some users

Friday, September 21st, 2018

Back at I/O 2018, Google announced two changes to the design and experience of Assistant on your phone. The first one, the visual snapshot that brings Google Now-like cards of your day, rolled out a couple of months ago (even though most of us still don't have the fancy swipe-up gesture to activate it); but the second one, which involves bigger cards and more visual responses, has just started showing up for some users.

Samsung Internet Browser gets design overhaul in v9.0 [APK Download]

Thursday, September 20th, 2018

Since it became available for non-Samsung phones, its Internet Browser app has become a popular alternative to Google Chrome. Compared to the stable version currently served by the Play Store (v7.4), there are several aesthetic differences in the v9.0, seemingly aligning better with the upcoming Samsung Experience 10 update.

 Versions 7.4 and 9.0.

The first noticeable change is that the labels under the nav bar items have been removed and the overflow menu has been replaced by a hamburger in the bottom right, forcing out the bookmarks shortcut.

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Several Google apps—Phone, Contacts, and Photos—have been updated with new interfaces in the past month or so, and the Calculator app is the latest recipient. Unsurprisingly, the update is purely cosmetic, adding Google's new favorite shade of blue and a lot more white. In other words, you guys probably aren't going to like this.

Left: Old. Right: New.

As with most of these redesigns, the colors and font have been tweaked.

Wear OS gets a redesign with a focus on health coaching and proactive information

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018

Google is attempting to breathe new life into Wear OS with another redesign. Things are getting shifted around so that the most important stuff is front-and-center, or just a quick swipe away. On paper, it all sounds pretty good.

One irritating thing about Wear 2.0 was how it handled notifications, especially bundled ones. Google says that it's addressing this in the redesign, but from the sounds of it, not much is changing.

Sunday, August 26th, 2018

Much like the desktop site, the PayPal mobile app has always supported sending money to friends, but it was a secondary feature. PayPal mobile app now focused on sending money to friends

Saturday, August 25th, 2018

Much like the desktop site, the PayPal mobile app has always supported sending money to friends, but it was a secondary feature. With the growing popularity of peer-to-peer payment apps like Venmo (which PayPal also owns), PayPal has decided to redesign the app and place a greater emphasis on sending money to friends.

The new layout makes it simpler "for customers to view their balance, get notifications, and move money from nearly wherever they are," as PayPal says in its announcement.

Google is working on a new Favorites tab for the Phone app [APK Teardown]

Friday, August 10th, 2018

Following the update to the Android Messages app, a matching update to its Phone app was also shipped for Pixels and other Google-supported handsets. The story is the same, though the visual changes look less severe since the old versions were already less colorful and contact photos were a bit more dominant. There aren't any live functional changes for the general public, but there is one notable change to the Favorites tab in the works.
