Losing Cast support could be the final nail in BeyondPod’s coffin

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019

In more bad news for users of once-popular BeyondPod, the app it has now lost cast functionality. It's been using Google Cast API v2 that was deprecated back in 2017, but since that has finally been sunsetted, casting from the app is no longer possible.

Since it was taken over by Smart Data Systems in March 2016, BeyondPod has been a buggy mess. It also stopped working on Android Auto last summer, although that problem was later resolved.

Spotify acquires podcast companies Anchor and Gimlet Media

Wednesday, February 6th, 2019

Spotify started supporting podcasts three years ago, and now the service is one of the most popular ways to catch up on audio shows. Rumors began to circulate last week that Spotify might buy podcast production company Gimlet Media, and now that has been confirmed — along with the purchase of Anchor.

Gimlet Media is a podcast production company and network, with shows including The Cut, Reply All, Science VS, and The Pitch.

Google is rolling out Android Auto support for Podcasts

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

When Google released the all new Podcasts app (again), many people were surprised its stark lack of features. Many things were missing, like auto-downloading, Cast support, and Android Auto integration. While many of these things have either trickled in, or are obviously on the to-do list, Google v8.91 is finally checking Auto support off of that list.

As you would expect from an Android Auto interface, this looks like most of the other podcast players out there.

Spotify tests letting you import local songs on Android, a tabbed Library view, and other improvements

Friday, November 30th, 2018

We love dissecting APKs here on Android Police — our own Cody spends his entire day going through all of Google's apps looking for the tiniest of changes that could hint at an upcoming feature, so we appreciate a lot the work others do when they look at apps that we don't have the time/manpower to. Take Jane Manchun Wong, for example. She's been leaking Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram features for a while, and her latest dip into Spotify has yielded a lot of interesting discoveries.

Google Assistant adding Clock app routines, smart speaker DND, Broadcast replies, and much more

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

In the voice assistant market, the most meaningful features often don't sound that impressive: more often than not, people use Google Assistant to do things like set timers and entertain the kids by playing fart sounds. It's not too sophisticated yet, but gradually we're heading toward the all-knowing AI of our dreams (and/or nightmares) — all it takes is consistent feature releases. Google is announcing a slew of those today, including the integration of Google Assistant routines into the Android Clock app, the ability to put your device into Do Not Disturb mode via smart speaker, and more.

Google app v8.49 beta prepares Collection sharing, Lens image search history, and and Workspaces [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018

Friday evening brought us another update to the Google app. Unlike the previous version, there are a fair number of topics to discuss from a teardown. Google is preparing a screen for viewing your image searches from Lens, Collection sharing, a few changes to the layout of settings, and there are even hints of a mystery feature named Workspaces.

Google Podcasts can now share links to shows and episodes

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

Google Podcasts is pretty widely regarded as lacking in features its competition has — notably, you can't mark multiple episodes as played at once or set the app to automatically download new episodes of shows you're subscribed to — but it's gradually improving. Case in point: the app can now generate links to podcasts and shows for easy sharing.

Sharing a podcast works pretty much like sharing anything else on Android: tap the three-dot overflow menu button in the corner, then Share.

Google app v8.33 beta gets closer to opening up notes and lists, prepares personalized news and home screen settings, and more [APK Teardown]

Saturday, October 20th, 2018

The latest Google app update is rolling out to the beta channel, but as usual, you're probably not going to see much in the way of changes after installing it. The version number lept from 8.27 to 8.33, which looks odd, but I assure you, it makes total sense if you think about it. Today we'll be talking about a new page for home screen settings, more about linking services to notes and lists, personalized news settings, and more.
