Pocket gets a makeover in v7.0 and improves listening feature

Thursday, October 11th, 2018

Since it was acquired by Mozilla last year, Pocket has continued to be regularly updated with useful new features. Today's update to version 7.0.1.2 is the biggest for some time, and it comes with a visual refresh and a new listening experience — Pocket is trying to be more like a podcast app.

The ability to listen to content you might normally read is growing in popularity, especially as we can save time by listening while on the move or doing some other task.

Monday, September 10th, 2018

The last couple versions of the Google app have been fairly sparse for significant changes, likely because we're closing in on the next major Google event next month. With the release of version 8.20, there are a few things worth quickly running through, including a new option to donate screen captures, additions to Podcast screens, and Saved pages has been renamed back to Collections (again).

What's New

Unofficial Changelog: (the stuff we found)

  • Donate screenshots
  • View RSS feed and View Website in Podcasts
  • Saved renamed back to Collections

Donating screen captures

Earlier this year, Google opened up an option for users to "donate" images captured in Google Lens.

An update on the Android Police Podcast and our Twitch channel

Friday, August 10th, 2018

The Android Police Podcast has been running semi-regularly since 2012, but earlier this year we implemented some changes. Previously, the live streams were only available on the AP Podcast YouTube channel, with audio versions hosted on SoundCloud (and available through Play Music/iTunes/Pocket Casts/etc.).

We launched a Twitch channel in May, where we stream the AP Podcast every Thursday at 5:30 PM Pacific Time (8:30 PM Eastern). We now have almost 3K followers - thank you for that!

Android Police is now on Twitch

Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

The Android Police Podcast has been running semi-regularly since 2012, with most of those episodes being recorded live on the AP Podcast YouTube channel. However, as some of you may know, Twitch is becoming an increasingly popular platform for talk shows and podcasts. As such, we have set up a channel at twitch.tv/androidpolice!

Twitch is the new home of the Android Police Podcast, but we will continue to stream to YouTube as well.

The Android Police Podcast has been running semi-regularly since 2012, with most of those episodes being recorded live on the AP Podcast YouTube channel. However, as I'm sure many of you know, Twitch is where all the cool kids are streaming these days. As such, we have set up a channel at twitch.tv/androidpolice.

Twitch is the new home of the Android Police Podcast, but we will continue to stream to YouTube as well (we just won't be checking the YT chat).

Pocket Casts announces Web Player 2.0 Beta, adds many features from the Android app

Monday, September 25th, 2017

I listen to podcasts on an almost daily basis, (including the excellent Android Police podcast, of course) and for as long as I can remember, my app of choice has been Shifty Jelly's Pocket Casts. It's easy to use, has all the features you'd expect, and the design is great. The developer is always looking to improve the experience, and for me it, became a whole lot more useful once a web player was added.

Google app v7.6 beta may confirm an Assistant button on future Chromebooks, promises to bring “What’s this song” to Assistant, and more [APK Teardown]

Thursday, June 29th, 2017

If you're on the list for beta updates to the Google app, a new version should have rolled out to you in the last day or so. We haven't seen any new features or notable changes yet, but there are quite a few interesting bits worthy of a teardown. There's a sign that rumors about an "Assistant" key on some new Chromebooks may be true and we may finally get to ask the Assistant to name songs again, among other things.
