LinkedIn somehow bamboozled 100 million people into installing its Android app

Thursday, April 19th, 2018

Everybody these days has a LinkedIn account, but mostly out of obligation. People don't consciously want to create one like they do with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; they do it because it's what's expected of them. For that reason, it's somewhat surprising that LinkedIn has managed to bamboozle 100 million people (or rather, Google accounts) into downloading its app from the Play Store.

Now, it's worth noting that this is actually 100 million Google accounts that have downloaded the app from the Play Store at least once, but we can't imagine that the actual number of people who've downloaded it is very far off since most individuals won't be doing so on multiple accounts.

Google Pay hits 100 million installs on the Play Store

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Nowadays, several phone manufacturers have their own payment services. There's Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, the upcoming LG Pay, and of course, Google Pay. After experiencing two rebrands and retaining the same Play Store listing, the Google Pay app has just hit 100 million downloads on the Play Store.

100 million is impressive, but it may not be nearly as impressive as you're imagining. For instance, Google Pay uses the same Play Store listing and APK pname (com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel) as Android Pay, which Android Pay continued to use from Google Pay.

Russia attempts to block Telegram with all the restrained composure of a bull in a china shop

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

The global availability of smartphones and the app stores that house their software makes it as easy for developers to share their work with users down the street as those living on the other side of the world. And while we tend to feel that broad access to software is almost always a good thing, not everyone is going to agree, and sometimes all it takes is one government getting upset about one app to cause some serious fallout.

I wish that there were more notable items in here, but that's just the way it goes. See you all after Tax Day.

Your Google Play Store review edit history is now visible to the public

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

App reviews in the Play Store can sometimes be a quite useful resource. Like pretty much any platform for commentary online, you've got to have a discerning eye in order to sort the genuinely useful information from all manner of fanboi rants or misdirected attempts for customer service, but it's still an asset plenty of us turn to time and time again. If you contribute reviews of your own, though, you may want to start being a little more thoughtful about what you say, as now other user can see all your old edits, even after you update your review.

Google Phone app now has a beta program on the Play Store

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

The Google Phone app has been updated fairly frequently as of late. In December, assisted dialing was added, and floating chat heads arrived in February. Now the company has opened a testing program on the Play Store, so you can try out in-development features before they arrive for everyone.

You can sign up for it at the source link below, but Google recommends you don't sign up for it on an account tied to your main phone.
