Google is working on ‘AltOS’ mode for Pixelbook that could allow it to run Windows

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Google’s flagship Pixelbook is one of the finest laptops money can buy, but it’s not an option for those who still don’t consider Chrome OS to be a real operating system. That may soon change thanks to an “AltOS” mode that could allow Pixelbook users to run Windows instead.

At $999, the Pixelbook isn’t cheap. That’s especially true when you consider that it doesn’t run traditional desktop applications, which many of us still rely on every day.

Google says the Pixelbook’s random reboot bug has been fixed

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018

The Google Pixelbook is a pretty fantastic laptop, but every tech product has a few bugs. Recently, some owners have been reporting a nasty reboot bug, where the Pixelbook will randomly restart while in use. The frequency varies from report to report, with one even saying it occurred every 1-10 minutes. Yikes.

Thankfully, the glitch has now been fixed, at least according to Google. Kevin Kirk, a support manager for the company, left the following response on several threads about the issue:

Hi all,

Sorry for the inconvenience, our engineers have found the cause and fixed it.

[Update: Now available for $100] Official Pixelbook sleeve pops up on the Google Store as ‘coming soon’

Wednesday, February 14th, 2018

With a device as pricey as the Pixelbook, you're probably going to want some sort of protection to make sure it doesn't get scratched or dented. The Google Store currently sells a leather Bellroy sleeve for the Pixelbook, but at $89, it's rather expensive.

More Chromebooks may get Google Assistant in the near future

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

One of the highlighting features of the Google Pixelbook at launch was the native integration of Assistant in the OS itself. It can be activated by either using the "Ok, Google" hotword like normal or via the dedicated Assistant key near the spacebar. But according to XDA, who have been playing around in the Chromium Gerrit, Assistant might be coming to other Chromebooks in the near future.

The merged commit that XDA spotted mentions "add Assistant feature flags changes accordingly" and "Assistant service provides core Google Assistant functionality." Both of these imply that Assistant integration in Chrome OS cannot be too far off.

‘Secret upcoming 4K Chromebooks’ mentioned in Chrome OS commit

Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

The Pixelbook sports a 12.3" 2400x1600 display, and nobody's complaining about it. In fact, we even praised it in our review for being nice in basically every aspect. But companies are constantly seeking to cram more and more pixels into their devices' screens, and Google is no different. According to a recent Chrome OS commit, we'll be seeing 4K displays on Chromebooks in the near future.

Here's the text from the commit (emphasis ours):

images: Update Chrome logo to increase resolution and circularity

The current Chrome logo (uploaded in CL:331831) is slightly oval for some unclear reason.

Ars Technica’s Ron Amadeo shows off Fuchsia OS running on a Pixelbook

Friday, January 19th, 2018

Fuchsia OS, Google's operating system that's neither Android nor Chrome OS, is gradually becoming more and more functional. The open-source OS which Google really doesn't want to talk about has recently added support for the Pixelbook as a test device, and now AP alumnus and Ars Technica editor Ron Amadeo has managed to get it working on one.

Work on Fuchsia first began in the first half of 2016 and has progressed at a steady pace.

Google offering a free pen loop to anyone who bought the Pixelbook

Thursday, January 18th, 2018

Google's Pixelbook comes with a big trackpad, a touchscreen, and (obviously) a keyboard. If that's not enough input for you, there's the Pixelbook Pen for an additional $100. This fancy stylus lets you write, draw, and access Google Assistant. One thing it can't do is dock inside the computer. Recognizing the obvious storage conundrum here, Google has decided to send out pen loops to all previous purchasers.

If you bought a Pixelbook, head over to the promotional site to get your free loop.

Google designer Ivy Ross shows off prototypes of Pixel 2, Pixelbook, Home Mini, and more

Wednesday, January 17th, 2018

Prototypes are always cool to see, but us consumers don't often get to do so. It's nice to take a look at how the designs of products evolve from the drawing board all the way to our homes, pockets, and backpacks. An interview with Google hardware designer Ivy Ross recently went up on The Keyword, and embedded within are photos of several Google products' prototypes.

I used the Google Pixelbook as my only laptop at CES – and it completely converted me

Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

The Google Pixelbook is a truly excellent piece of hardware, as I stated in my review of it over two months ago. The refrain so often heard about Chromebooks, though, is that Chrome OS's limited application ecosystem prevents it from being a "serious" laptop operating system. As someone who frequently travels and has to be mobile as part of my job, I thought I'd put Google's laptop to the test in a live environment: CES.

Until February 1, U.S. customers can get a free Pixelbook Pen with the purchase of a new Pixelbook at the Google Store, Amazon, or Best Buy.

Integrated stylus functionality has become one of the big selling points for high-end portable devices, but the big players in this space, Apple, Microsoft, and Google, each charge $99 for their device-specific styluses. That's on top of the many, many hundreds of dollars they already charge for the iPad Pro, Surface, or Pixelbook devices themselves.
