Pixel 3 and 3 XL seem to have silently picked up HDR support in Netflix

Saturday, January 12th, 2019

Content quality in Netflix covers a range from old-school SD to a brain-searing 4K, further augmented by the option for HDR — which, in Netflix's case, is effectively an extended color gamut. We've kept an eye on which phones snag the feature, and based on recent reports, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL appear to have just picked it up.

Note the "HDR" badge below the preview on this screenshot from a Pixel 3 XL.

Google appears to have fixed the ‘check for update’ button on Pixels again

Monday, January 7th, 2019

In what is likely to be the biggest low-key Android news today, Google seems to have silently flipped the switch (again) when it comes to the "check for update" button on Pixels. On every Pixel device we've tested here at Android Police, tapping the button in the Settings app is successfully pulling down the recent January update.

For a bit of perspective, OTA rollouts are usually pushed out to a smaller group before everyone else, to better ensure that a serious, undetected problem with a given update only affects a few people before it's caught.

January Pixel updates are out now: Pixel 3 video sound quality fix, 5X and 6P finally left behind

Monday, January 7th, 2019

The latest pair of Google flagships haven't been without their controversies — it's effectively a yearly ritual as the tech enthusiast community picks apart a new Pixel phone's faults— but subsequent updates typically resolve the vast majority of these issues. Lucky for us, Google claims that another Pixel 3 problem has been resolved with January's update. The issue with low-quality audio while recording video is allegedly fixed. And downloads are posted and ready for sideloading if you're impatiently waiting for this fix to hit your own Pixel 3.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL will get LTE band 48 in a future software update

Friday, January 4th, 2019

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL launched late last year with a robust but not comprehensive set of LTE bands. According to an FCC document, Google has asked regulators to approve a change to the Pixel's LTE complement. In the coming months, these phones could get LTE band 48, which is good for everyone.

Most LTE bands are licensed to specific carriers via FCC auctions. That's why you need to peruse LTE band listings to make sure your carrier is fully supported.

Pixel 3, 3 XL, and Pixel Stand are now available in Puerto Rico

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

When we say something is available in the US, I'm sure Puerto Ricans rush to see if this means their territory is included or not, and it's probably a coin toss between both options. For the Pixel 3 line-up, those of you in Puerto Rico could not buy the phones until now, but things have finally changed for the better.

Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, along with the Pixel Stand, are now available for purchase on the Google Store in Puerto Rico.

Pixel 3’s ‘fatal error’ third-party app camera bug may be fixed in December update

Friday, December 21st, 2018

Last month we reported that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL had an intermittent problem with third-party apps when using the camera. Those that ran into the issue would get a "fatal error" or similar warning as the camera failed to work in the app, a problem that would then persist in those apps even across reboots. Although not everyone was affected, we've seen reports that the issue has been resolved for many with the recent December patches.

Pixel 3’s Top Shot can choose a better photo than the one you took, and here’s how it works

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Google's Pixel 3 and 3 XL have some of (if not the) best cameras of the year, and paired with that generally impressive performance are a handful of pretty nifty software features. One of them, called Top Shot, makes those great photos even better by helping out when you make a mistake and snap a photo just a bit too early or too late. And while we knew a little bit about how Top Shot worked, there were pretty large gaps in our knowledge.
