Pixel Sounds updated to v2.0, and it actually works now [APK Download]

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018

Google laid the groundwork for a new app earlier this month, and now you can (maybe) use it. While the prospect of "Pixel Sounds" isn't the most exciting, it improves a part of the Android experience that has long needed an overhaul. Pixel devices will soon have a more expansive set of ringtones with a much prettier interface. The app didn't work when it first popped up, but v2.0 does, and it's rolling out now.

Verizon brings next-gen RCS messaging to Pixel 3 and 3 XL, starting today

Thursday, December 6th, 2018

RCS has been a long time coming, but the last few carrier holdouts in the US are finally starting to push out support for the "enhanced messaging" standard. Earlier this year, T-Mobile rolled the feature out to the Galaxy S7, then the S8, and now Verizon is joining in on the fun a bit earlier than originally expected, pushing out RCS support to Google's latest Pixel 3 and 3 XL starting this morning.

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018

Pixel season wouldn't be complete without a bunch of complaints from early adopters of possible hardware and software faults. Last year, the main controversy surrounded the terrible LG OLED panels used for the Pixel 2 XL.

When Google announced the revamped Google One subscription, it said there would be special perks and deals for members. It didn't offer much in the way of examples at the time, but it's starting to take shape with a new promo. If you've got a Google One subscription, check your email. You may well have an offer for up to $200 off the Pixel 3/3 XL.

The email entitles the recipient to either $125 or $200 off the new Pixels, but it's not clear what determines your discount.

Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and others will soon support the Pixel 3’s eSIM

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

The Pixel 2 was one of the first smartphones with eSIM — a feature that allows devices to connect to cellular networks without inserting a physical SIM card. The Pixel 2 and 3 both have eSIM, but it's only used for Google Fi. That will soon change, as multiple carriers are working to support the feature.

In a blog post, Google said that Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Sprint, EE, Airtel, Reliance Jio, Truphone, and Gigsky will be able to activate the Pixel 3 using eSIM "in the coming months." In other words, devices bought from (or switched to) those carriers won't require any physical SIM cards to be activated.

[Update: Starting to arrive] Google Pixels will be able to save Call Screen transcripts later this year

Friday, November 30th, 2018

Call Screen was arguably the most impressive feature Google debuted at the Pixel 3 launch event. Google's AI can answer the phone and ask what the purpose of the call is, providing an on-screen transcript of the conversation so you can decide if you want to talk to them or not.

Google used this ridiculous 5-phone case to fine-tune the Pixel 3’s portrait mode

Thursday, November 29th, 2018

We were pretty impressed with how the Pixel 2's portrait mode worked, and Google's deep dive into the technical details was easily one of my favorite reads of last year. The company must have recognized what a hit it was, as a new explanation for the differences behind the Pixel 3's depth-sensing tech was just published. As always nowadays, a big chunk of the changes are due to the magic of neural networks, but Google also has a "Frankenphone" 5-Pixel case to thank for the Pixel 3's Portrait progress.
