Google Store launches in Singapore with Pixel 2XL, Google Homes, Chromecast, and more

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Buying Google's gadgets can be very difficult if you live in a country where they're not officially available. Overpriced black markets, questionable imports, and difficulty of finding support are some of the issues you face. But after today, that won't be the case for Android and Google fans in Singapore as the official Store is now launched in their country.

The Google Store in Singapore carries 6 products so far, but they're arguably the most interesting.

Android Auto Wireless is now enabled for Nexus and Pixel devices

Friday, April 13th, 2018

Android Auto's Wireless mode was rumored for months before we got official confirmation of it. JVC and Kenwood introduced a total of 7 Auto head units with Wi-Fi connectivity as an option at this year's CES, but until now even if you just got one of these new units, you couldn't use the mode as your phone wasn't ready for that. Now Google has flipped the switch: wireless mode for Android Auto is enabled on Nexus and Pixel devices.

Google's monthly tradition continues—owners of Pixel and (some) Nexus devices can grab the latest software builds. The updates will roll out automatically in the coming days, but you don't have to wait. The OTA files and system images have both shown up, and there are bulletins documenting the surprisingly extensive list of changes.

The new Oreo builds with April security patches are available for first and second generation Pixel phones, as well as the Nexus 5X, 6P, and Pixel C tablet.

Google claims Pixel 2 MMS issues fixed despite continued reports

Saturday, March 31st, 2018

According to a statement made by a Google employee on the Pixel product forums, a somewhat widespread problem with receiving MMS messages on the Pixel 2 XL has been resolved. But if you ask the people that claimed to be affected, you'll get a very different answer.

We had heard some reports for this problem ourselves, which manifests as an inability to receive or download MMS messages sent to a Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Preferred Care coverage extends to 30 months (6 months longer)

Friday, March 30th, 2018

Last year's Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are some exceptional smartphones, but they didn't land without causing a few controversies. A number of early criticisms centered around the displays these two phones were using, complaining about possible burn-in, under-saturated colors, and an annoying blue tint. While none of these problems were so severe as to sink the fortunes of either model, Google still had to acknowledge that customers were upset, and we saw it reach out to do so by extending the manufacturer warranties of both phones from one year to two.

Review: Moment’s modular lenses up your Pixel 2’s photography game… if you have a few hundred bucks lying around

Tuesday, March 27th, 2018

The cameras on smartphones are getting ridiculously good --- good to the point that most households don't even own standalone cameras anymore. But given the dimensions that phone cameras are restricted to, they're not as flexible as something like a mirrorless or DSLR with interchangeable lenses. That's where Moment comes in. The company offers a small collection of lenses that can be individually purchased and attached to its Photo Cases, which are available for a variety of phones.

But now, a new offer for the Pixel 2 XL has taken its place: a $200 statement credit when financed with Google Store Financing. A free 18W charger will be thrown in even if you don't choose to finance.

The Google Store has only run one financing deal before, and that was a $75 credit on the Pixel when it was just already eight months old.

Thursday, March 15th, 2018

The Pixel 2’s Motion Photos can now be exported as GIFs with Google Photos

Wednesday, March 7th, 2018

One of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL's highlight features was Motion Photos. It's not something most of us really care about, and it's something I quickly disabled, but it can be fun for those with little ones. In keeping with one of our teardowns from about a week ago, Google has added the option to export a Motion Photo as a GIF to the Google Photos app.

The feature is accessible from the three-dot menu in Photos' image viewer.
