Thursday, November 16th, 2017

These days, TWRP is virtually the only custom recovery for Android devices on the market, so it's a relief that it's actually good. It also covers an incredibly large amount of devices, with more constantly being added.

Google Assistant is able to troubleshoot problems on your phone (Pixel 2 only, for now)

Thursday, November 16th, 2017

The Google Assistant on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL is more powerful than ever before, and it can help you do a bunch of things with your phone like change settings or initiate a conversation with support. Thanks to a whimsical request from a reader, we now know about one more ability the Assistant has.

On a Pixel 2 XL running the Android Oreo 8.1 dev preview, our tipster asked the Google Assistant why his phone wasn't charging fully, and to his/our surprise, a troubleshooting process was initiated.

The Pixel 2 uses “Fused Video Stabilization,” and the technology behind it is incredible

Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

With its new Pixel 2 phones, Google introduced something called Fused Video Stabilization. It's a proprietary combination of optical image stabilization, electronic image stabilization, and the company's fancy machine learning tech. Its results are stellar, giving Google's Pixel 2 phones one of the best, if not the best, video capturing results out there. Since we know that it works well, now the burning question is: how does it work?

We could post examples of Google's Fused Video Stabilization all day, but suffice it to say that the results are unarguably an improvement over OIS or EIS alone.

Use this IFTTT applet to log your Pixel 2 Now Playing history to a Google Spreadsheet

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

The Pixel 2 and 2 XL have a nifty always listening music ID feature. You can simply look at your phone and see a "Now Playing" notification that tells you if the phone has heard a popular song. Google doesn't keep a log of the songs you encounter, but you can do that yourself with IFTTT.

IFTTT user hypnopompia created an applet you can add to your IFTTT account right now. It uses the Android notification service to watch for the Now Listening notification, then it logs the content of that notification to a spreadsheet in Google Drive.

Pixel 2 cameras don’t like LED lights, display strange banding when aimed in their direction

Monday, November 13th, 2017

There's no doubting that Google's 2nd generation Pixels are excellent phones, but like any major release, they've not been without their fair share of teething problems. The screen of the Pixel 2 XL has captured the most headlines, with various issues which may or may not have been overblown in some media circles. With all that talk of the display, the camera must have been feeling left out. Well not anymore.

Some Pixel 2 XL touchscreens are unresponsive near the edges, but a fix is coming

Saturday, November 11th, 2017

Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Pixel 2 XL has another screen issue. Just a few days after we posted about the screen flashing when some owners unlock or lock their Pixel 2 XL, some of the device's owners are having difficulty with touch responsiveness near the edges of the screen. The good news is that Google has acknowledged the issue and will sort it out in a future OTA update.

Google Assistant on Pixel 2 is not detecting voice input through Bluetooth headphones

Friday, November 10th, 2017

Most owners of OG Pixels can attest that Bluetooth on those devices is not the best. We've written a fair few articles about the various issues over the past year, but with the launch of the new Pixels we were hopeful that Google might have improved things somewhat. While Bluetooth performance so far does seem to be more consistent, we've just learned about one particularly annoying bug that Pixel 2 owners have uncovered.

Some Pixel 2 XL screens are flashing when locking and unlocking

Wednesday, November 8th, 2017

An altogether very well-received phone, the Pixel 2 XL has gotten mostly glowing reviews for its minimal bezels and standout camera. Its display, however, has been widely criticised for a host of reasons, including washed out colors, significant blue shift when viewed at an angle, lines of dead or colored pixels, graininess, and light bleed, just to name a few. Now, reports are surfacing of yet another issue with the screen — as if the current ones weren't already enough.

Google posts system images and OTA files for Pixel 2 XL November update, plus new builds for Pixel 2

Tuesday, November 7th, 2017

Google started rolling out its November patches yesterday, but the Pixel 2 XL was conspicuously absent until later in the day. Even when the OTA began rolling out, Google had not posted the files on its developer site. Now, those files are live and raedy for sideloading. The Pixel 2 also has some new builds in addition to the ones from yesterday.

The OTA files can be used to update from the last official build, and your bootloader can remain locked.
