Get a refurbished Pixel 2 for $420 or Pixel 2 XL for $440, today only on Woot

Tuesday, November 20th, 2018

Last year's Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL might not be Google's latest and greatest anymore, but they're still nice devices. They even have some advantages over the newer models, depending on your views on glass backs and notches. Woot has a great deal on the duo today, with the Pixel 2 going for $420 and the XL for just 20 bucks more.

The smaller Pixel 2 can be had for as low as $419.99 for the 64-gigabyte model (that's a little over half the starting price of a Pixel 3), or $459.99 for the 128-gigger.

Call Screen is starting to hit some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones

Friday, November 16th, 2018

The Pixel 3 launched with Call Screen, which allows Assistant to "answer" by asking who's calling and offering ways to respond to calls. At the event, Google promised that the feature would trickle down to the older Pixel and Pixel 2 phones in November. We're halfway through the month, and it looks like Call Screen is indeed starting to hit some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones.

We've gotten one tip from a reader with a Pixel 2 XL, and there's a post in r/GooglePixel showing it on a Pixel 2.

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

At the Pixel 3 launch event in NYC, Google showed off what it called "Night Sight," a feature that produced incredible looking photos in a near-absence of light. Modified versions of the Google Camera app gave everyone willing to sideload them an early taste at the feature, but the wait is now over. And according to Google, Night Sight is rolling out for all Pixel devices, past and present, in the coming days.

November security patch forces Night Mode when Battery Saver is enabled, whether you want to or not

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018

With the November security patch that began rolling out to Pixels last week, one change was made to the way Night Mode and Battery Saver interact. When the latter is enabled, the former immediately changes to on, and the behavior can't be modified, though you can manually switch back to off.

Take a look at the GIF below. I start off in Developer options, with Night mode set to Always off.

What We Use, 2018 Edition: The stuff Rita can’t live without

Saturday, November 10th, 2018

It's been four years since I shared with you all the gadgets and quirky things that I own and love in my previous What We Use post. In the time since, a lot has changed in my personal life. I met the most awesome, weird, and pun-loving man. We got married, moved into an apartment of our own, and started traveling a little more frequently.

But a lot is still the same.

November OTA files, factory images, and security patch notes for Pixel and Nexus devices are up

Monday, November 5th, 2018

One of the best benefits to owning Google's hardware is the regular monthly updates, which deliver both bug fixes and security patches at a predictable schedule. Like clockwork, Google has just pushed out its November OTA files and Factory Images for Pixel and currently supported Nexus devices — or, at least, for most of them. Unfortunately, functional patches this month don't seem to include fixes for any of the recent Pixel 3 issues just yet.

Now Playing History arrives on Pixel 2 and 2 XL

Monday, November 5th, 2018

One of the coolest little features that came with the Pixel 2 was Now Playing, which would listen out for any music that was playing around you and try to identify it. It's basically an always-on Shazam that shows you the track names on the lockscreen.

There's always been one major drawback, though — if you're not looking at your phone while the song is playing, you'll miss out. Until the launch of the Pixel 3, there was no such thing as a list of all the songs previously identified.

Modded Google Camera APK enables Night Sight for all Pixel devices (and it’s impressive)

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

The guys at XDA Developers often like to tinker with APK files to enable hidden features, trigger specific behaviors, or spoil Google's surprises prematurely. Their latest software shenanigans involve Google's Camera app and the promised Night Sight feature that is supposed to come next month.

Announced with the Pixel 3, Night Sight is a low-light photography mode that ekes out every wave and particle of light to get clearer, better-lit shots in dark environments.

[Update: Rolling out to all Pixels] Google promises to fix camera bug resulting in unsaved photos

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

A few nasty software bugs have been discovered on the Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL, one of which causes some photos not to be saved. It's not entirely clear what triggers the bug in the first place, though there were reports of it affecting other Google-made phones too, like the Pixel 2 XL.
