LG G8 to have 3D time-of-flight sensor on front for enhanced face recognition and portrait shots

Thursday, February 7th, 2019

Now that renders have shown what the G8 ThinQ will look like, LG has revealed more about the upcoming flagship that will be unveiled at MWC. The new handset will feature a time-of-flight sensor, which is expected to offer fast and precise facial recognition.

Just like FaceID, the time-of-flight camera in the G8 will use infrared light to build a 3D model of the subject and confirm identity. LG has collaborated with Infineon to integrate its dedicated REAL3 ToF chip, meaning the phone will need less processing power and use less energy compared to other devices that rely on software algorithms for facial validation.

A Christmas gift for Android Police readers: 60+ high-res wallpapers

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, jolly Kwanzaa, or content December. I'll let you pick the greeting you identify with most. During this time of year it's lovely to focus on the things that bring us together, and one thing I think we can all agree on here at AP is that free stuff is awesome. In that spirit of awesomeness, I'd like to give each of you a small gift to celebrate Christmas (I'm doing the giving here, so I think I get to pick the occasion).

As much as I'd like to send you all a Pixel 3, a MacBook, or an Xbox, I don't have the money for that, and if I did, I probably would spend it on something sweet like a hovercraft loaded out with flamethrowers and a snow-cone machine.

This is how Super Res Zoom on the Google Pixel 3 works

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Google's latest flagships are here, and as with the previous two generations, the headline feature is the camera. Yet more computational magic has made its way into the camera on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, including something called Super Res Zoom. It's practically the 'enhance' feature we've all been waiting for, but how does it work?

Pixel 2 v Pixel 3 at 7x zoom.

Ryan touched on this in his Pixel 3 review — he was pleasantly surprised by the results, even if they aren't quite as good as with optical zoom — and now a post on the Google AI Blog goes deeper into the mechanics of the feature.

Check out what one guy did with a 360-degree camera and some steel wool

Monday, August 13th, 2018

Up until today, I knew steel wool only as something used for polishing/cleaning, but it's apparently pretty good for 360-degree photos, too. The r/pics subreddit is often filled with things that would better fit some other subreddits, but this photo from /u/mohair69 is a prime example of something that belongs there.

As a recap for those of you who may have been as oblivious to steel wool's photographic effects as I was, this effect is achieved simply by swinging a ball of steel wool, lit with a lighter or battery, attached to a whisk or something similar.

Moment camera app brings advanced camera controls and RAW mode in a lightweight UI

Tuesday, July 10th, 2018

When Google launched the Pixel 2, there was quite a bit of talk about a little lens maker named Moment. Get it, 'little lens' maker... I'll show myself out. The company made a name for itself with the iPhone crowd, but over the last couple of years the product line has expanded to include some of our favorite Android phones, including the Galaxy S8 and S9, Note 8, and both Pixel generations (and sizes).

Moment’s new $149 anamorphic lens lets you shoot cinematic-looking footage with your phone

Tuesday, March 27th, 2018

Moment's made a name for itself creating lenses for smartphones (which we just published a review of today, by the way), but the company is now venturing into a new segment: filmmaking. This campaign is being kickstarted (pun not intended) by a $149 anamorphic lens, and the results look pretty impressive. That's probably how the Kickstarter already has over $370,000 (and climbing) in funding on a $50,000 goal.

Three other products were unveiled alongside this lens by Moment today: an iPhone X Battery Photo Case, a gimbal counterweight, and a filter mount.

Review: Moment’s modular lenses up your Pixel 2’s photography game… if you have a few hundred bucks lying around

Tuesday, March 27th, 2018

The cameras on smartphones are getting ridiculously good --- good to the point that most households don't even own standalone cameras anymore. But given the dimensions that phone cameras are restricted to, they're not as flexible as something like a mirrorless or DSLR with interchangeable lenses. That's where Moment comes in. The company offers a small collection of lenses that can be individually purchased and attached to its Photo Cases, which are available for a variety of phones.

Visual China Group has acquired photography platform 500px

Monday, February 26th, 2018

It has been a while since we last covered 500px, but it remains a popular platform for photographers to share their work. Users can organize their pictures into galleries, and occasionally participate in 'Photo Quest' challenges to win prizes. Now the company has been acquired by Visual China Group, which now has 100% of 500px's shares.

In July 2015, VCG invested around $13 million in 500px, and became the exclusive distributor of the platform's images in China.

Thursday, February 22nd, 2018

Snapchat is an inexplicably popular service, but you know what it's missing? There just aren't enough augmented reality filters (known as Lenses) for your snaps, right? True or not, Snap has announced a new tool called Lens Studio that will let anyone create augmented reality objects and publish them for other Snapchat users.
