Google Phone v24 includes first pieces of Dark Mode [APK Teardown]

Thursday, September 27th, 2018

As many people had hoped, Google has been progressively adding dark modes to some of its core apps. Last month, there was even a teaser added to the Play Store changelog for the Google Phone app that promised to give users a choice between the all white look that has become so common, or a dark look that promises to be easier to the eyes, especially at night. The latest version is out, but unfortunately, this update won't be the one to enable dark mode.

Google is working on a new Favorites tab for the Phone app [APK Teardown]

Friday, August 10th, 2018

Following the update to the Android Messages app, a matching update to its Phone app was also shipped for Pixels and other Google-supported handsets. The story is the same, though the visual changes look less severe since the old versions were already less colorful and contact photos were a bit more dominant. There aren't any live functional changes for the general public, but there is one notable change to the Favorites tab in the works.

Report: Amazon may be working on a new, ‘much more intuitive’ phone

Sunday, July 29th, 2018

Most of us probably remember the Fire Phone, which was Amazon's first and last effort in the market. The device ran a heavily modified version of Android, and though it packed some interesting face-tracking technology, the interface itself was pretty godawful. Its mediocre specs were paired with an astronomical price tag, and just a bit over one year later, the Fire Phone finally burnt out. Now, according to a recent report by TheWrap, Amazon's mobile ambitions might be preparing to pull a phoenix and rise from the Fire Phone's failed ashes.

When Jenn Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, spoke to a reporter at the recent Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, she was specifically asked about a phone with an improved Amazon Prime Video interface.

Google Phone app now has a beta program on the Play Store

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

The Google Phone app has been updated fairly frequently as of late. In December, assisted dialing was added, and floating chat heads arrived in February. Now the company has opened a testing program on the Play Store, so you can try out in-development features before they arrive for everyone.

You can sign up for it at the source link below, but Google recommends you don't sign up for it on an account tied to your main phone.

Google Phone v18 switches to system settings for sound and vibration controls [APK Download]

Wednesday, March 21st, 2018

Android Messages set an example last year by doing away with its own built-in notification settings and instead redirecting users to the new Notification Channels feature in Android 8.0 Oreo. This single change gave users more options to fine-tune notifications than the app previously offered, and it was all in a fairly standard system interface. The Google Phone app is now making a similar change, but this time it's relinquishing its old settings screen for sound and vibrations and replacing it with the Sound settings offered by the system.

Weekend poll: Are you giving someone an Android device for the holidays?

Sunday, December 17th, 2017

Finding the right gift for someone this time of year can be tricky. But if there's one thing we're apt to recommend here at Android Police, it's an Android device.

Ripping open that wrapping paper to find a phone or tablet is an excellent way to cap off your holiday. It's better to give than to receive, though, and with all the recent sales, it doesn't have to be a very costly proposition.
