Commuters in Melbourne can now add their Myki card to Google Pay

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Google Pay is aiming at becoming a true virtual wallet by gathering payment and loyalty cards in a single application. Since last year, commuters in Las Vegas, Portland, and the West Midlands have also been able to save their transit tickets in their phones, allowing them to leave their wallets at home. Melburnians, and more generally Victorians, can also now use their handsets as their transportation pass, as Google Pay just added support for Myki, the region's transit card — not the password manager we reviewed.

Google Pay brings new bank options to users in Australia, Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden

Monday, January 14th, 2019

Google Pay users in the States have a pretty nice thing going for them, with the service supported by umpteen million financial institutions (give or take a million). But as we travel abroad, the situation's much more hit-and-miss. It's far from a sure thing that Google Pay is available in a country at all, and even where it is, the selection of partner banks can be pretty sparse. So today we're happy to share with you some progress towards remedying that situation, as new banks come online for Google Pay around the globe.

Google Pay v2.80 adds notification setting for places to use loyalty cards, prepares automatic imports from Gmail [APK Teardown]

Saturday, December 22nd, 2018

If you haven't already seen enough activity with Google Pay in the last month, there are a few notable things happening in the last couple updates. Version 2.80 brings changes to the notification settings screen by dropping the long list of loyalty cards and adopting a new setting to notify you about places those cards can be used. A teardown also reveals upcoming notification channels and a brand new feature that will automatically import relevant tickets and passes when they arrive in your Gmail account.

France says ‘bonjour’ to Google Pay as support for first six banks arrives

Monday, December 10th, 2018

Last week we got caught up with some of the latest banks to join the Google Pay family, seeing new payment options come online for users in Spain, Italy, and Japan. While that was fantastic, for as much as we love seeing Pay support fleshed out in nations like these, it's even better when it comes to an entirely new one. As fate would have it, that's exactly what's happening right now, as Google Pay comes to France.

Google Pay v2.78 prepares group pay and nicknames for payment methods [APK Teardown]

Tuesday, November 20th, 2018

As we get ready to wear out our credit cards buying gifts for family, friends, coworkers, and probably ourselves, it's a good time to talk about Google Pay and what's in store for it in the future. Unfortunately, we won't be building on the holiday shopping theme with any of the teardown topics, but at least there are a couple of cool features that might get us feeling a little more festive about spending our hard-earned cash with our phones.

Expanded Google Pay bank support arrives for Australia and Japan

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Little by little, Google's recruiting the world's financial institutions to support its Google Pay ecosystem. At least, we regularly see dozens upon dozens of US banks line up to work with Google Pay, but sometimes international compatibility is harder to come by. Earlier this month we spotted a few such additions, with new Pay banks popping up in Poland, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia, and now we've got a bunch more to share, with even more Australian banks joining the gang, as well as new options landing for Japan.

Update Notes for Photos, Play Store, Keep Notes, and more (October 8th, 2018)

Monday, October 8th, 2018

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Migrating payment card info from Chrome to Google Pay might soon be possible

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

At the moment, it's possible to sync the payment cards you have in Google Pay with Chrome's autofill feature. This is incredibly handy for when you make purchases online, especially on sites that don't have Google Pay as a payment option. Unfortunately, it's not possible to sync your data the other way, from Chrome to Pay, but it looks like that functionality will be added in the near future.

According to a commit in the Chromium Gerrit, discovered by XDA Developers, an "intermediate bubble UI for local card migration flow" is being planned.

Google Pay v1.57 prepares support for airline boarding passes and event tickets, Suica and WAON payment cards, and more [APK Teardown]

Sunday, April 22nd, 2018

It wasn't that long ago that Google Pay (and its previous names) was solely focused on making purchases in a store or paying on the spot to get onto subways...and sometimes sending money to friends. Google recently added support for one-time transit tickets on the Las Vegas Monorail and prepaid commuter cards with the TriMet in Portland, Oregon, but things are about to get a lot more interesting thanks to the latest update.
