Android 8.1 may have made the Pixel 2 XL’s fingerprint unlock slower for some

Friday, December 15th, 2017

Have you noticed that it takes just a bit longer to unlock your Pixel 2 XL when you use the fingerprint reader? If so, you aren't alone. In the last few weeks since the update, there have been multiple reports that the Pixel 2 XL takes about a second longer to unlock the device when using the fingerprint reader. The good news is that Google is looking into it.

Thankfully it isn't a very severe problem, as the only disadvantage is the extra bit of time it takes to use your phone, but compared to the nearly-instantaneous unlocking the Pixel 2 XL previously had, it is a bit unfortunate.

Android 8.0 Oreo beta hits Nokia 5, will arrive on Nokia 6 soon

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Nokia's actually been doing very well in the update game for its new line of phones under HMD, with incredibly quick security patch releases and software betas. For instance, the 'flagship' Nokia 8 got an Oreo beta back in late October, with the full update issued just a month later. Now development is trickling down to the lower-end models, namely the Nokia 5 and 6. The Oreo beta for the Nokia 5 is out now, with the 6's coming soon.

December 2017 platform distribution numbers: Oreo’s piece of the pie nearly doubles as Nougat’s share continues to grow

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Well, it's that time of the month again. Like last month, Google's a bit later than it usually is with these numbers, and it isn't because we have a new version of Android for the chart. Although 8.1 has been released, this month's platform distribution numbers don't include it. Nougat continues to make gains, cumulatively adding an extra 2.7% to its slice of the pie, and Oreo has almost doubled to 0.5%.

If you just want to look at the numbers, here they are:

Android version stats, December 2017

Android versionPrevious data (%)Current data (%)Change (pp)
2.30.50.4-0.1
4.00.50.50
4.12.22.0-0.2
4.23.13.0-0.1
4.30.90.90
4.413.813.4-0.4
5.06.46.1-0.3
5.120.820.2-0.6

7.017.619.3+1.7
7.13.04.0+1.0
8.00.30.5+0.2

Oreo's gains might seem small, but it has increased ever so slightly faster than Nougat/7.0 did this long after its launch.

Android 8.1 update caused some Pixel C tablets to factory reset, Google says it’s fixed

Sunday, December 10th, 2017

When a manufacturer releases a system update, there is a general assumption that the update will not break everything. If you have a Pixel C that hasn't received the Android 8.1 update yet (or you've been holding off), consider yourself lucky - many users discovered that the OTA triggered a factory reset.

Google released the final build of Android 8.1 earlier this week, and the update started to roll out to Nexus and Pixel devices worldwide (including the Pixel C).

[FYI] For some, mobile data is now set to “always active” by default in Oreo

Saturday, December 9th, 2017

Android O contains plenty of power-saving improvements for the platform. But it would appear that at least one of the changes won't be improving your battery life. For some users, on updating to Android Oreo (8.0 or 8.1), "mobile data always active" in Developer options will be enabled. While that will make switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data faster, it may also consume a bit more power.

Our own Artem noticed it enabled on his device although he hadn't flipped that switch himself.

Android 8.1 feature spotlight: Speed labels for open Wi-Fi networks are now displayed in settings

Friday, December 8th, 2017

While open Wi-Fi networks are nice to find, they can sometimes be so slow that you'd prefer to just use your precious mobile data. Google seems to agree with this, having implemented these Wi-Fi speed labels for open networks in Android 8.1 Oreo to let users decide whether they should connect to a certain unknown network.

Without having seen the feature in action, you might be confused (like Artem was) as to what exactly it does.

Google is pushing final 8.1 OTA updates to Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices on the beta

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

Android 8.1 Oreo is final just a few weeks after the second developer preview rolled out. You can get the system images and OTA files for manual installation, and OTAs are hitting phones running 8.0. That's not all—devices in the developer preview that were running DP2 are also seeing an OTA update today.

So far, Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices are getting an OTA notification.

For the Pixel 2 XL, the OTA update clocks in at just 42.9MB.

Contacts sync is breaking on some devices running Android Oreo

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

One of the most basic and convenient features of life in Google's ecosystem is contacts sync. From email to phone numbers and Google+ profiles, you know that whatever platform you are on, you'll be able to reach out to the people you need to with a minimum of fuss. But for some this essential feature isn't working correctly, and contacts aren't being successfully synced to their Oreo-powered Android devices.

Reports are varied.

Mi A1 owners can now apply to join Xiaomi’s Oreo beta

Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

Xiaomi phones usually have great hardware, but less than impressive software. That's why we were excited to see and review the Mi A1, the company's first Android One device. Given the phone's branding, Oreo was expected to arrive sooner than it would to MIUI-running devices. Lo and behold, it has - at least in the form of a beta.

Not a ton of information was divulged aside from the screenshots posted above, which show this is 8.0.0 Oreo on the December 1st security patch.
