Android 8.1 Oreo rolling out to the Amazon Prime and retail Moto X4

Tuesday, June 19th, 2018

Amazon's Prime Edition phones don't have ads anymore, but there is some Amazon bloat that can affect updates. However, Amazon and Moto have managed t keep the retail and Prime versions in sync. About a month after the Android 8.1 update hit the Android One Moto X4, the Amazon and retail versions are getting the OTA (version OPW28.2).

The phone already had Android 8.0, so there won't be many changes here.

Nokia 2 gets its first Android Oreo 8.1 beta

Tuesday, June 19th, 2018

Nokia and HMD are at it again, releasing an update to Android 8.1 Oreo for another one of their devices. This time, it's the low-end Nokia 2 that was announced last October. The device launched with Nougat 7.1.1 and skipped the Android Oreo 8.0 release to wait for a direct jump to 8.1 with some under-the-hood optimizations from Android Go. That update is now available for beta testers.

If you own a Nokia 2, you can head over to Nokia's Beta Labs, register an account if you don't have one already, and enroll your phone's IMEI number in the test.

Android 8.0 Oreo rolling out to Verizon Moto Z, Moto Z Force Droid Editions

Monday, June 18th, 2018

Android 8.0 Oreo rolled out to the unlocked Moto Z in May. Now, the Verizon "Droid Editions" of both the Moto Z and Moto Z Force are getting the update. It comes with all the expected Oreo goodies — picture-in-picture support, notification improvements, and the like.

The update also brings with it improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance, and you'll no longer have to restart your phone when swapping SIM cards. A subtle tweak, but still nice.

Android-x86 Project releases first Oreo build (release candidate 1)

Monday, June 18th, 2018

Running Android on your PC can be a surprisingly shady experience with emulators that spam you with ads or try to hide Bitcoin miners on your system. When in doubt, there's always the open source Android-x86 Project. It just so happens that Android-x86 just released a build of Android Oreo.

As the name implies, Android-x86 is a version of Android designed to run on computers with the x86 architecture. It usually runs behind official Android releases for several months, but now we have the first release candidate for 8.1 Oreo.

[Update: Rolling out in June OTA] Google has a fix for Pixel 2 XL proximity sensor issues, expect it ‘in the coming months’

Monday, June 4th, 2018

Back in October, we reported on a change in the Android 8.1 release that made the proximity sensor behave differently. Unlike before, it wouldn't turn Ambient Display off when you covered the sensor, something we saw even in 8.0 for the newer Pixel 2s. That may or may not have been intentional, but it seems there were also other issues relating to the proximity sensor in 8.1, more about which you can read in this mega thread on the Pixel User Community forum.
