dbrand’s new Swarm material is its most textured, tactile, and dynamic yet – get it at 20% off right now [Sponsored Post]

Thursday, February 21st, 2019

Electronics skins from dbrand. Why do you need one on your phone, laptop, console, or other devices? Well, they add grip, and a layer of protection against wear and tear, dings and scratches. Let's be honest though, you could accomplish that with some duct tape and a exact-o-knife if you wanted to get crafty. The things that set dbrand's skins apart are that they are perfectly cut to fit your device and –most importantly– they look freaking awesome.

Fresh off the press (or whatever machine they use to make skins) is dbrand's latest sick look– Swarm.

OnePlus adds Google Duo integration to OxygenOS Phone app

Friday, February 15th, 2019

If you have a OnePlus phone, and you've been paying close attention to the changelogs, you may have noticed that the last OxygenOS update included better integration with Google Duo. OnePlus has now officially announced the new functionality, and explained how it came to be added.

Starting with OxygenOS 9.0.12 on the OnePlus 6T, and OxygenOS 9.0.4 for OnePlus 6/5/5T, Duo is now integrated into the default Phone app. It's very similar to the integration Google added to the Pixel's dialer in 2017 — a video button appears alongside contact names in the dial pad, call log, and other sections.

OnePlus launches competition to design new OxygenOS feature, winner gets phone and VIP event trip

Monday, February 4th, 2019

If you've ever thought you had a good idea for a new software feature for your phone but didn't think there was any point in sharing it with someone, now's your time to shine. OnePlus is running a Product Management Challenge (#PMChallenge) asking for your best new feature ideas, with some pretty decent prizes for the winner.

To enter, you need to come up with something new that could be implemented in OxygenOS and then submit it in the form of a product requirements document, just like a real OnePlus employee would need to do.

OnePlus suspends latest Open Beta update after it bricked some 5/5T phones

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Oh, boy, that's not good. Due to a critical error with the last Open Beta that ended up soft-bricking some 5 and 5T devices, OnePlus is completely pulling the new build for those phones and for the 6/6T. Oops.

I noticed yesterday that the company had yanked the Open Beta 12 for the OP6, saying only that "The build has been pulled, a new OTA will be available soon." But then, a company rep took to the forums to announce that they had received reports of the OTA failing on some 5/5T units and soft-bricking those affected devices.

OnePlus 6 and 6T wrecking audio quality by using the wrong mic in some apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

The OnePlus 6T may have been our favorite phone of 2018, but it wasn't without its problems. Recently, we reported that OnePlus phones appear to be resetting battery optimization settings randomly, but it appears that OnePlus 6 and 6T may also have some good, old-fashioned microphone troubles, too: Many are experiencing issues with call and recording quality in third-party apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Reports are widespread, going back to the middle of last year.

OnePlus phones are discarding Android’s battery optimization whitelist, a problem as more apps update to target Oreo

Friday, January 18th, 2019

Usually, OnePlus is praised for its Oxygen OS software, which offers a light-touch, near-stock experience — at least, visually. Turns out, the company has been making some deeper changes to Android on its phones, and not all of them are for the best. Right now one of the most frustrating parts of OnePlus ownership for many is the company's aggressive battery optimization settings, which can kill apps you may want to be kept open.

DontKillMyApp.com shames OEMs that needlessly kill useful background processes to save battery life

Sunday, January 13th, 2019

The days when third-party battery-saving apps were necessary to hit a satisfactory number of hours off a single charge are long behind the vast majority of Android users, thanks to improvements like Doze and Adaptive Battery. But in some cases, this measure of progress has become something of a Pyrrhic victory, with useful background processes carelessly destroyed and developers taking the brunt of user ire. Well, the Urbandroid team — the gang behind apps Sleep As Android, Twilight, and others — doesn't plan on going quietly into the night.
