The most underrated feature of OnePlus phones? The cases

Thursday, April 19th, 2018

OnePlus has a lot of things going for its phones. They're usually the least expensive way to get flagship specs like the latest high-end Qualcomm SoC, and the software experience is close to stock Android. But, in my opinion, their best feature isn't something you're likely to notice unless you spend a bit more time and money on the company's store. That's because the first-party wood and Kevlar cases OnePlus sells are, without exception, the single nicest I've ever used.

OnePlus posts new Open Beta builds after removing them during domain change

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

OnePlus is good enough to provide beta versions of OxygenOS for most of its phones, but those downloads vanished yesterday. We wondered at first if there was a bug, but OnePlus claimed the removal was just because it switched to the oneplus.com domain. Now, the betas are back, but the builds are newer.

You can once again get the latest OxygenOS beta builds (based on Oreo) for the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T.

[Update: Not intentional] OnePlus pulls latest Open Beta for all its phones

OnePlus finally buys the website address it should have had all along

Monday, April 9th, 2018

Most reputable sites on the internet are registered under the .com top-level domain. For what amounts to essentially meaningless historic reasons, people will generally agree that a domain that ends in .com feels more official than one ending in, say, .net or .biz. Of course, as more and more people and businesses come online, it becomes harder and harder to grab a relevant domain name — let alone one that ends in .com — and so you're often forced to settle for second best.

Opinion: Essential could learn a lot from OnePlus – specifically, its mistakes

Monday, April 9th, 2018

Since Essential launched the PH-1 last year, the phone has gained a cult following. Although the phone isn't without its faults, there aren't many other choices for a Snapdragon 835 below $500, and many people took advantage of last fall's Sprint and Amazon sales that saw the price even lower, under $400. Essential even pioneered the "notch," which (like it or hate it) is only just now coming into vogue. The company and its products aren't perfect by any means, but one might even call Essential disruptive.

Sunday, April 8th, 2018

OnePlus frequently releases 'Open Beta' updates, where users can try the latest changes before they are ready for widespread use. The builds are usually pretty stable, but since they are intended for testing, issues occasionally crop up. It appears the latest Open Betas have a nasty bug, as OnePlus just pulled them from its website.

The versions pulled were Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 5, Open Beta 24 for the OP3T, Open Beta 33 for the OP3, and Open Beta 5 for the OP5T.

Wireless earbuds are all the rage, especially since manufacturers began making the unfortunate trend of removing the headphone jack from smartphones. Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

After much anticipation, LineageOS 15.1 (based on Android 8.1) was announced last month. Only a handful of devices had official 15.1 builds at the start, but over time, more have been moved up to Oreo. OnePlus 6 will get option to hide the notch in a post-launch software update

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

Like it or not, the OnePlus 6 is going to have a notch. In an attempt to soften the blow and deal with the inevitable criticism ahead of the phone's launch, OnePlus has been bullish about the inclusion. Co-founder Carl Pei did an interview in which he explained the decision and its various merits, and CEO Pete Lau started up a thread on the company's forum to engage with fans on the subject.
