OnePlus posts new Open Beta builds after removing them during domain change

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

OnePlus is good enough to provide beta versions of OxygenOS for most of its phones, but those downloads vanished yesterday. We wondered at first if there was a bug, but OnePlus claimed the removal was just because it switched to the oneplus.com domain. Now, the betas are back, but the builds are newer.

You can once again get the latest OxygenOS beta builds (based on Oreo) for the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T.

OnePlus pulls latest Open Beta for all its phones

Sunday, April 8th, 2018

OnePlus frequently releases 'Open Beta' updates, where users can try the latest changes before they are ready for widespread use. The builds are usually pretty stable, but since they are intended for testing, issues occasionally crop up. It appears the latest Open Betas have a nasty bug, as OnePlus just pulled them from its website.

The versions pulled were Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 5, Open Beta 24 for the OP3T, Open Beta 33 for the OP3, and Open Beta 5 for the OP5T.

Latest OnePlus 5/5T Open Betas add network priority in Gaming Mode, improved Weather app accuracy, and more

Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

It's the end of another month, so OnePlus pushing out new Open Betas to the 5 and 5T shouldn't be a surprise. While not quite as big of a deal as last time, the latest updates bring some nice minor quality-of-life improvements.

Here's the changelog:

Launcher
  • Added recent search tag in search app section of the app drawer
  • General bug fixes and improvements
Weather
  • Improved accuracy of the current location
  • Added new icons and updated UI
Gaming mode
  • Network boost in Gaming mode – network priority for gaming App in the foreground

Those of you who still use the stock OnePlus Launcher – I just cannot bring myself to use it over Action or Nova – should appreciate the recent search tag in the app drawer.

OnePlus 5T stock for North America has run dry, no more planned

Saturday, March 24th, 2018

OnePlus' 5T has been in and out of stock at the company's website for the last couple weeks, and it turns out that's not a fluke. Engadget has confirmed that the company has run out of all its North American stock in just four months. If you didn't manage to grab one new from the OnePlus store, 3rd party resellers and used phones are now your only option.

The 5T has had a wild ride.

OnePlus 5T gets Android 8.1, February security patch, improved gesture navigation with Open Beta 4

Sunday, March 11th, 2018

The latest Open Beta for the OnePlus 5T brings Android 8.1, the February security patch, and a handful of other updates. This comes just a day after the OnePlus 5 got an almost identical set of updates in its latest Open Beta.

Android 8.1 is the star of the changelog here, of course. But there are a few other notable updates included in Open Beta 4 for the OP5T:

Upgraded system to Android 8.1 Oreo

Phone

  • Added New auto pick up gesture - answer incoming call by raising the phone
  • Added global roaming solution

Gaming mode

  • Added new optimizations in gaming mode for immersive gaming experience including
  • notifications blocking, power saving and pausing adaptive brightness

System

  • Added more clock styles for ambient display
  • Optimized full screen gesture support (this is only for 5T)
  • Updated Android security patch to 2018-02

OnePlus Switch

  • Supported data migration for application backup

The full-screen gesture support first appeared in the previous Open Beta build for the OP5T, which landed at the end of January.

OnePlus updating its 5 and 5T to play HD Netflix, but you have to send your phone back to get it

Saturday, February 24th, 2018

OnePlus' phones are a great value, but they've each individually had a few drawbacks. One negative they all had in common, though, was a DRM deficiency. None of the company's handsets supported the correct DRM level required for HD playback in Netflix. Distress on the subject came to a head late last year, and OnePlus surprisingly announced that it would add the feature in the future. In a comment on OnePlus' forums today the company confirmed that it was now able to update handsets to support it, but the process will require that you send the phone back to OnePlus for the update.

The deficiency stems from OnePlus' failure to perform the steps required to reach the L1 security level in Google's Widevine DRM, which is required by Netflix for HD playback.

The Lava Red OnePlus 5T is sold out for good in the US and Canada

Thursday, February 22nd, 2018

Were you hoping to pick up a OnePlus 5T in the eye-catching Lava Red down the line? Well, if you're in the US or Canada, you won't be able to anymore - at least from OnePlus directly. The company has announced that the red 5T has officially sold out in North America.

This isn't a huge surprise, considering that the Sandstone White's stock will also never be replenished, but it's a disappointment nonetheless.

[Update: Downloads are live] OnePlus begins rolling out official Oreo OTA for OnePlus 5T

Tuesday, February 6th, 2018

OnePlus made the rather odd decision to launch its new phone in late 2017 with Android Nougat, which was a year old at the time. It said an Oreo update would arrive soon, and depending on your definition of "soon," OP has come through.
