OnePlus 5 and 5T can’t play Netflix in HD, but the feature will be added at some point

Sunday, December 10th, 2017

The OnePlus 5T is one of our favorite phones at AP. It's a fantastic value, improving on its predecessor without costing a whole lot more. But there is still one unfortunate disadvantage to using one. Like OnePlus' older phones, it doesn't support the correct DRM level for HD playback on services such as Netflix. But OnePlus has promised us that this will be corrected in the future for the OnePlus 5 and 5T.

We first learned about the DRM deficiency a bit over two weeks ago (when I got mine and checked the DRM level), and we immediately reached out to OnePlus for more information.

OxygenOS 4.7.4 is rolling out to the company's latest flagship as we speak, bringing with it camera improvements, bugfixes, and piles of optimizations.

The update to 4.7.4 doesn't include any increase in monthly security patch level, it's still just October and it's still just based on Android Nougat 7.1.1.

[Update: More info] OnePlus confirms it won’t have Project Treble on any current devices, including the OnePlus 5T

Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

Android updates have never been very fast or consistent, but Google took some steps to improve the process several months ago. That's when it announced Project Treble, a feature of Android Oreo and later that makes OTAs modular. Devices that launch with Oreo will support Treble, but those updated to Oreo won't—at least mostly. OnePlus has confirmed on its forums that Treble won't be part of any current devices, including the new OnePlus 5T.
