OnePlus posts new Open Beta builds after removing them during domain change

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

OnePlus is good enough to provide beta versions of OxygenOS for most of its phones, but those downloads vanished yesterday. We wondered at first if there was a bug, but OnePlus claimed the removal was just because it switched to the oneplus.com domain. Now, the betas are back, but the builds are newer.

You can once again get the latest OxygenOS beta builds (based on Oreo) for the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5, and 5T.

OnePlus pulls latest Open Beta for all its phones

Sunday, April 8th, 2018

OnePlus frequently releases 'Open Beta' updates, where users can try the latest changes before they are ready for widespread use. The builds are usually pretty stable, but since they are intended for testing, issues occasionally crop up. It appears the latest Open Betas have a nasty bug, as OnePlus just pulled them from its website.

The versions pulled were Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 5, Open Beta 24 for the OP3T, Open Beta 33 for the OP3, and Open Beta 5 for the OP5T.

Latest OnePlus 5/5T Open Betas add network priority in Gaming Mode, improved Weather app accuracy, and more

Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

It's the end of another month, so OnePlus pushing out new Open Betas to the 5 and 5T shouldn't be a surprise. While not quite as big of a deal as last time, the latest updates bring some nice minor quality-of-life improvements.

Here's the changelog:

Launcher
  • Added recent search tag in search app section of the app drawer
  • General bug fixes and improvements
Weather
  • Improved accuracy of the current location
  • Added new icons and updated UI
Gaming mode
  • Network boost in Gaming mode – network priority for gaming App in the foreground

Those of you who still use the stock OnePlus Launcher – I just cannot bring myself to use it over Action or Nova – should appreciate the recent search tag in the app drawer.

OnePlus 5 Open Beta 6 brings Android 8.1, February security patch, and more

Saturday, March 10th, 2018

OnePlus 5 owners received a nice surprise today. Open Beta 6 has a fairly important change in tow; it brings the phone up to Android 8.1. Other changes are along for the ride, too, but the highlight is the base OS version bump.

As usual, I have the changelog:

Upgraded system to Android 8.1 Oreo

Phone

  • Added New auto pick up gesture - answer incoming call by raising the phone
  • Added global roaming solution

Gaming mode

  • Added new optimizations in gaming mode for immersive gaming experience including
  • notifications blocking, power saving and pausing adaptive brightness

System

  • Added more clock styles for ambient display
  • Optimized full screen gesture support (this is only for 5T)
  • Updated Android security patch to 2018-02

OnePlus Switch

  • Supported data migration for application backup

The highlight, being the update to 8.1, is obvious and already stated.

OnePlus updating its 5 and 5T to play HD Netflix, but you have to send your phone back to get it

Saturday, February 24th, 2018

OnePlus' phones are a great value, but they've each individually had a few drawbacks. One negative they all had in common, though, was a DRM deficiency. None of the company's handsets supported the correct DRM level required for HD playback in Netflix. Distress on the subject came to a head late last year, and OnePlus surprisingly announced that it would add the feature in the future. In a comment on OnePlus' forums today the company confirmed that it was now able to update handsets to support it, but the process will require that you send the phone back to OnePlus for the update.

The deficiency stems from OnePlus' failure to perform the steps required to reach the L1 security level in Google's Widevine DRM, which is required by Netflix for HD playback.

[Update: Downloads posted] OxygenOS 5.0.2 for OnePlus 5 brings face unlock, better EIS for video, CPU security patch, and more

Saturday, February 3rd, 2018

Face unlock has been in Android for years, though it recently became a hot topic again when OnePlus put it in the OnePlus 5T. The 5T's implementation is stupid quick - so quick, in fact, that you often don't even see the lockscreen before it unlocks.

Face unlock has been in Android for years, though it recently became a hot topic again when OnePlus put it in the OnePlus 5T. The 5T's implementation is stupid quick - so quick, in fact, that you often don't even see the lockscreen before it unlocks. Now, in OxygenOS 5.0.2, the feature has made its way to the OnePlus 5 as promised. There are some other fixes/additions included as well.

Tuesday, January 30th, 2018

OnePlus 5 and 5T owners might have woken up to a new Open Beta for their phones this morning, which is the second this month. As you might have read in the title, this update is smaller in nature, but it removes the controversial Clipboard app and addresses a few other things.

Here is the changelog:

  • Added SMS categorized function in India
  • Removed phone recognized function in India

System
  • Supported full-screen gesture
  • Removed Clipboard function
  • General bug fixes and improvements
