Latest OnePlus 3/3T Open Beta adds a new DND UI, better battery standby, and more

Friday, November 17th, 2017

With all of the OnePlus 5T news, and the admittedly righteous anger from some of the OP community, it's easy to forget about yesteryear's phones. Both the OP3/OP3T received another Open Beta update, which is supposed to improve the overall Oreo experience on the two devices.

Here's the changelog:

  • New UI for Do Not Disturb
  • Optimized standby battery usage
  • Smart Text Selection improvements
  • General performance improvements
  • Updated OnePlus and GMS applications
  • Updated Google security patch (October 2017)
  • Other bug fixes and optimizations

A new UI for DND sounds interesting, though I am not entirely sure why it was needed to begin with.

OnePlus left a backdoor in its devices capable of root access

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

Just a month ago, OnePlus was caught collecting personally identifiable data from phone owners through incredibly detailed analytics. While the company eventually reversed course on the data collection, another discovery has been made in the software of OnePlus phones. One developer found an application intended for factory testing, and through some investigation and reverse-engineering, was able to obtain root access using it.

The application in question is called 'EngineerMode,' which is intended to be used in factories to confirm that the device is working properly.

Guide: The best phones and tablets for LineageOS

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

The following post was written by Ryne Hager and Corbin Davenport.

The vast majority of Android device buyers don't know or care what a custom ROM is. And that's completely fine - a phone or tablet's stock ROM will be enough for 99.9% of potential users. But for the 0.1% that like to tinker, the development community surrounding a given device can drastically impact the value. Your purchase can become a much better deal if there is a wealth of custom ROM options available, extending its lifespan for possibly years (and nearly a decade for the HD2).

The OnePlus 5 may have come out, but that doesn't mean the company has forgotten about the 3 and 3T. Earlier today, the two phones were updated to Oxygen OS 4.5.0, introducing a pile of new features like "lift up display," Gaming Do Not Disturb, low priority notifications, and OnePlus' Slate font. Most of the changes in this release were already available on the OnePlus 5, but it's great to see them trickle down onto older hardware.

The OTA update is hitting devices now, and it's 197MB in size.
