Nacho Notch could help you cope with the Pixel 3 XL’s big honkin’ display cutout

Thursday, October 11th, 2018

It's not so much that we like them, but in late 2018, we're getting used to notches on the whole. The Pixel 3 XL's bizarrely tall cutout, though, is particularly irksome. You can toggle it off in the phone's developer options, but doing so means the screen space on either side goes unused. Nacho Notch can black out the area on either side of the notch while still letting it show status bar icons.

You can turn off the Pixel 3 XL notch in developer options

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

Google has now officially hopped on the notch train with the Pixel 3 XL. Not only does it have a notch, it's a big notch. Google points out that the Pixel 3 XL still has a notch toggle in the developer options. However, this way of hiding the notch is a bit different than other notch-hiding phones.

7 smartphone trends that were terrible ideas

Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

Smartphones have been around for over a decade now. In fact, the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, debuted 10 years ago today. It's not surprising that the category has seen some pretty horrible trends in that amount of time. We've compiled seven of the worst ones we could think of in this post, a couple of which are (unfortunately) still ongoing.

3D screens

When you think "3D phone," your head probably goes straight to 2011's HTC EVO 3D, and maybe the LG Optimus 3D that debuted shortly after.

Google Pixel 3 leaks with notchless 5.5″ 1080p display, dual front cameras with variable apertures, and more

Thursday, August 30th, 2018

The Pixel 3 XL has been leaking left and right, and to put it lightly, people have not been happy with its massive notch. We're finally getting to see the smaller Pixel 3 for the first time, and it looks like this may be the Pixel to get this year for many of you.

Historically, the smaller Pixels have had huge bezels, but that's changing with this third generation. The symmetric, unintrusive top and bottom bezels with their dual front-facing speakers make for a non-XL Pixel that is - dare I say it - actually pretty good-looking from the front.

The most interesting smartphone innovations in the last year (or so)

Tuesday, August 28th, 2018

We've seen our mobile devices evolve from novelties to ubiquitous, do-it-all pocket supercomputers in just a few decades. Lately, though, there's been a sense of fatigue about the progression of mobile technology: the breakneck pace of big-ticket advancements has slowed, and even devices which we can't find fault with just seem kind of meh. Smartphones have matured, and the days of the next big thing actually being something big are largely behind us, but that doesn't mean improvements have stopped altogether.

Renders reveal Huawei Mate 20 with triple rear cameras and Essential Phone-like notch

Monday, August 20th, 2018

While this past year hasn't been entirely smooth sailing for telecom equipment and device manufacturer Huawei, there have been some major highlights. Among them: the critical success of the Huawei P20, an Android device reviewers were surprisingly passionate about, which is rare in this smartphone-fatigued modern era. Along with the Mate series, Huawei's P series represents the company's premium-tier efforts. Now, a series of credible renders have emerged that reveal the alleged Mate 20, Huawei's next shot at impressing the Android set.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite leaks with a notch and four cameras

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

Phones are starting to look the same, largely thanks to the iPhone X. Huawei was never very good with making their own designs, and while it's improved over the years, WinFuture and Evan Blass have revealed that it just couldn't resist joining the notch movement with the Mate 20 Lite.

We had already seen the Mate 20 Lite on TENAA, but we have more photos and details now.
