Nokia 5.1 Plus announced in India, with a notched 5.8″ display, MTK Helio P60, and dual rear cameras

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

HMD Global has unveiled its latest mid-range Nokia-branded handset in India, confirming an earlier leak that suggested similar design language to the Nokia X6 and subsequent X5 released in China. What they have in common is a notched display, 5.8 inches and 19:9 in the case of the 5.1 Plus. There's also an octo-core MediaTek Helio P60 chip, and dual rear cameras on board.

If you don't mind the notch, it's not an unattractive device — the 2.5D curved glass around the sides of the screen should feel pretty good in the hand.

Thursday, September 20th, 2018

Prices for the original Nokia 6 have been falling steadily over the past few months. Back in May, the phone was just $199 from Newegg, and now it's available for $180 from B&H. That's not a bad price for one of last year's best budget phones.

The 2017 Nokia 6 has a Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB RAM, a headphone jack, 32GB storage (with microSD card support), and a 5.5-inch 1080p LCD.

Nokia 7 Plus becomes the first non-Pixel with Android Pie’s Digital Wellbeing features

Thursday, September 20th, 2018

Google unveiled Digital Wellbeing at I/O this year and strongly implied it would be part of Android Pie. However, the feature only launched on Pixel devices as a beta at first. Now, Digital Wellbeing has expanded to its first non-Pixel phone—the Nokia 7 Plus.

I know what you're thinking. The Nokia 7 Plus doesn't even have a final Pie build yet. That's true, but Google has still opened up the Play Store listing to Nokia's phone.

Withings is back with the Steel HR Sport, a hybrid smartwatch with advanced multisport tracking

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

Although its watches don't run Wear OS, we've followed Withings closely for a few reasons. For one, it makes beautiful minimalist watches with some smart fitness tracking features added in (I own an Activité Steel and I love it). The French company has also been in the news a lot due to Nokia acquiring it, turning it into its Digital Health Division, and then selling it back to its co-founder.

T-Mobile strikes $3.5 billion 5G deal with Ericsson, matching recent Nokia investment

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

Now that the 5G standards are complete (both standalone and the kind that piggybacks on LTE), American carriers are rushing to pump up the hype ahead of initial trials and deployments. For T-Mobile, that means announcing a new $3.5 billion investment in 5G with Swedish supplier Ericsson a mere week and a half after announcing a deal of the same dollar amount with Finland-based Nokia. In total, that's a whopping $7 billion.

From T-Mobile's announcements, it seems the operator will be dividing the labor and dual sourcing from the two companies equally, buying both hardware and software compliant with global standards from Ericsson and Nokia.

Nokia 7 Plus now receiving Android 9 Pie Beta 4.1 instead of expected stable release

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

When Nokia sent out its last Android 9 Pie developer preview at the beginning of August, HMD Global CPO Juho Savikas proclaimed on Twitter that it would be the last one before the final stable version, due this month. The company must have hit a slight snag, as its now pushing out another point release even though the final build was expected this month.

A couple of tipsters let us know that Beta 4.1 (otherwise known as v3.190) was hitting their Nokia 7 Plus devices, including the September security patch among a few other improvements.
