The Nokia 6.1 Plus is the China-exclusive X6 with Android One

Thursday, July 19th, 2018

Nokia climbed aboard the screen notch bandwagon a few months back with the X6, a China-exclusive phone with a 5.8-inch display and a chin. Now, that same piece of hardware is launching in a few more markets as the Nokia 6.1 Plus. It has the same specs and design, but this is an Android One phone.

The Nokia X6 is only available in China, so it can't have the Google apps necessary to be "Android One." The Nokia 6.1 has that pure, unadulterated build of Android 8.1 along with a Snapdragon 636, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 3,060mAh battery.

Nokia X5 jumps on the notch bandwagon with modest specs and fitting price

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018

HMD Global has been a somewhat late notch adopter, but after biting the Apple-fired bullet with the Nokia X6, the exclusive brand licensee is doubling down by officially unveiling the X5.

As expected, the new China-first mid-range phone is extremely similar to the X6, both in terms of design and specifications. But as the name suggests, the Nokia X5 starts at a lower price point, cutting a few corners compared to its cousin, as well as the 6.1, which Jordan called the "best budget phone of the year."

Specs

Display 5.86-inch 19:9 HD+
Processor MediaTek Helio P60
Memory 3 or 4GB
Storage 32 or 64GB (microSD expandable up to 256GB)
Rear camera 13MP PDAF (f/2.0) + 5MP
Front camera 8MP (f/2.2)
Battery 3060mAh
OS Android 8.1 Oreo
Connectivity LTE Cat.4, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS/AGPS, GLONASS, BDS, Galileo, USB Type-C
Dimensions 149.51 x 71.98 x 8.096mm
Colors Black, blue, white
Headphone jack Yes

Instead of Full HD or Full HD+ resolution, the notched 19:9 5.86-inch display settles for an HD+ pixel count.

Nokia allowed for 7 Plus owners to opt-in and try Android P, and now the consecutive update for the next preview is rolling out in a surprisingly timely manner. Images of notched Nokia ‘5.1 Plus’ leak, borrowing heavily from Nokia X6

Monday, July 9th, 2018

The Nokia X6 may have been the first Nokia smartphone with a notched display under HMD Global, but if a leak today is any indicator, it won't be the last. In what Twitter leaker @OnLeaks is calling the Nokia 5.1 Plus, we see much of that X6 design language coming to what will presumably be a more affordable handset.

The Nokia 5.1 was announced at MWC, and it's one of HMD's more oddball MediaTek handsets, using the latter's Helio P18 processor.

Nokia 3.1 launches in the US today at $159

Monday, July 2nd, 2018

Late last month, Nokia said that the 3.1 would be available for purchase in the US on July 2nd. Well, it's July 2nd, and that's... kinda true. In spite of listings being on Amazon, B&H, and Best Buy, only one of those retailers has made the Nokia 3.1 available for purchase today - Best Buy.

The $159 price tag gets you a 5.2" 720p display, a MediaTek MT6750, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage with microSD expansion, a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front-facing camera, and a 2,990mAh battery.

Nokia 6.1 review: The best budget phone of the year is not without its flaws

Thursday, June 28th, 2018

The budget phone space is certainly filling up with some spectacular options. From the extremely capable Honor 7X to the newly-released Moto G6, buyers strapped for cash have several great phones to choose from. But as much as those devices have impressed us in the last few months, HMD Global's Nokia 6.1 has surpassed all of my expectations for a sub-$300 phone.

On paper, it sure sounds like it ticks all the boxes.

Nokia reportedly working on Snapdragon 845 device with in-display fingerprint sensor

Wednesday, June 27th, 2018

Many of us are perfectly happy with the fingerprint scanner positioned on the back of our phones — where there's plenty of room even as bezels on the front shrink. However, under-display sensors continue to be heralded as the next great innovation in mobile tech. Vivo has shown everyone else what's possible and other OEMs are sure to follow suit, hoping that the wow-factor alone will move consumers to get on board.
