Nokia 2 leaks in photos, and it definitely looks like a phone

Thursday, September 14th, 2017

Nokia's Android product line is already getting a tad confusing. HMD Global currently manufactures four Nokia-branded devices, ranging from super-budget to flagship - the 3, 5, 6, and 8. Now HMD appears to be working on an even cheaper device, dubbed the 'Nokia 2.'

While rumors of this device have been circulating for a while, the above press renders were leaked by Evan Blass on Twitter today. Per previous leaks, the phone is expected to have a Snapdragon 210/212 chipset with a 720p display (somewhere between 4.5-5").

Monday, September 11th, 2017

It might not be available in the US just yet, but HMD Global is already preparing to update the entry-level Nokia 3 to Android 7.1.1. The phone launched with Android 7.0 Nougat, which isn't too shabby, but 7.1.1 will bring with it a few new features.

Nokia 3, 5, 6, and 8 will get Android 8.0 Oreo

Monday, September 4th, 2017

The recent Nokia-branded phones from HMD Global have been pretty popular. The goal of a near-stock Android ROM with quick updates has also caused Android enthusiasts to take notice, especially as many budget phones don't receive major updates at all.

While HMD Global has been quick with smaller updates, like Android 7.1, the real test comes with major Android upgrades. Juho Sarvikas, the Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, tweeted earlier today that the entire Nokia lineup will receive Oreo.

Nokia 3 comes out mostly-victorious in JerryRigEverything’s test

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

Nokia and HMD Global have been pretty good so far with building durable Android phones. The Nokia 6, the first Nokia-branded Android phone, has a very good build quality (especially for the price). JerryRigEverything, the YouTube channel famous for testing the limits of various electronics, has revealed how much of a beating the Nokia 3 can take.

If you're not familiar with it, the Nokia 3 is the lowest-end model of Nokia/HMD's Android lineup.

Nokia 8 is official with Snapdragon 835 and 4GB RAM, likely not coming to the US

Wednesday, August 16th, 2017

So far, HMD Global has released three Nokia-branded Android phones - the Nokia 6, 5, and 3. But the most-expensive model, the Nokia 6, still had a mid-range Snapdragon 430 processor. With HMD/Nokia's clean Android ROM and competitive pricing, many hoped for a true flagship model to be released. Now the time has come, as HMD has taken the wraps off the Nokia 8.

This phone has been in the rumor mill for months, usually referred to as the Nokia 7 or Nokia 8 in various leaks.

Nokia 5 and 6 start receiving August security patch on the same day as Nexus/Pixel devices

Tuesday, August 8th, 2017

We at AP usually don't cover security patches for non-Google devices, as those are released for different models constantly, but we found this pretty interesting: Nokia began pushing the August 2017 security patch to the Nokia 5 and 6 yesterday, the very same day that Google did. Impressive work, HMD Global.

BlackBerry releases the monthly security patches at this time consistently, but since the whole company is security-focused, it'd be a bit of an embarrassment if anything else were true.

HMD Global uploads Nokia Camera app to the Play Store

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017

It's a pretty common practice for manufacturers to upload their custom system applications to the Play Store. This is done so the apps can be updated outside of Android system updates. The Nokia phones produced by HMD Global are pretty close to stock Android, but there are a few custom apps. One of these is the Camera application, which has now been published to the Play Store.

The current version is v6.0080.07, and as you might expect, it can only be installed on Nokia phones.

Nokia 3 will be updated to 7.1.1 by the end of August

Monday, July 31st, 2017

It might not be available in the US just yet, but HMD Global is already preparing to update the entry-level Nokia 3 to Android 7.1.1. The phone launched with Android 7.0 Nougat, which isn't too shabby, but 7.1.1 will bring with it a few new features. If this is a predictor of future software support, customers that pick up one of the new Nokia Android phones may have a lot to look forward to.

The news was released a couple days ago via a tweet from Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, which licenses the Nokia name to produce Android phones.

[Update: In silver] Nokia’s flagship phone will likely be called ‘Nokia 8,’ with Snapdragon 835 and 4GB RAM

Tuesday, July 18th, 2017

Nokia and HMD Global stormed onto the Android budget phone scene earlier this year, with the Nokia 6. A few months later, the Nokia 5 and 3 were announced to complete the lineup. But many have been holding out for a modern Android Nokia flagship, which has been rumored for a few months now.
