New unlocked phones pop up on Amazon Prime from time to time, and sometimes they're even important enough to warrant a post. Today is special, though. There's not one, not two, but four new unlocked phones available on Amazon with Prime-exclusive variants: the Nokia 6, Alcatel Idol 5S, A30 Plus, and A50 (left to right above). They're all priced competitively, and you can save some cash if you don't mind ads.

HMD Global partners with Zeiss to give Nokia phones better cameras

Thursday, July 6th, 2017

HMD Global, maker of the new Android-based Nokia phones, is trying its best to recreate the classic Nokia phone formula. The Nokia 6 is very durable (especially for a phone in its price range), much like some Nokia phones of old. Now, HMD is partnering with Zeiss to improve the cameras on future Nokia phones.

You may recall that Nokia partnered with Zeiss years ago to develop its 'PureView' camera technology used on phones like the Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020.

Nokia and Xiaomi join forces with a business cooperation and patent licensing agreement

Thursday, July 6th, 2017

Nokia and Xiaomi, two widely known and renowned companies, announced today that they were signing a business cooperation and patent licensing agreement. It's not uncommon to see joint ventures between corporations, but these two seem like an unlikely pair at first glance.

Under the agreement, both companies will share "cellular standard essential patents," with Xiaomi acquiring certain assets from Nokia (whose portfolio is massive). Beyond just that, the two entities will also work together on delivering high capacity/low power solutions for datacenters and large web providers, as well as IP routing that centers around Nokia's new network processor.

Amazon will begin taking pre-orders today for five new Prime Exclusive phones from the likes of Nokia, Motorola, and Alcatel. As usual, Amazon's Prime Exclusive Offers on the lockscreen bring down the cost of the handsets considerably, making them a tempting buy if you're already a Prime subscriber. Let's break down the offerings.

Prime Exclusive Nokia 6

First, we've got the Nokia 6. Nokia actually announced US availability for the 6 yesterday, and it will be available Prime-less on Amazon for a very reasonably $229.

Nokia 6 coming to the United States in early July for $229

Monday, June 26th, 2017

Earlier this year, HMD Global started production of Android phones with the Nokia brand. The Nokia 6 was revealed in January, and the Nokia 6 and 3 were announced the next month. The phones have been well-received, and HMD seems dedicated to quick updates. Unfortunately, none of them have been (officially) available in the United States.

HMD Global has announced that the Nokia 6 will go on sale in the United States in "early July," through Amazon.

Withings is now Nokia Health, two new devices and ‘Health Mate’ app released

Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

Back in April of last year, Nokia announced its intent to purchase French health company Withings. Withings was known for its large range of consumer health products, including smart scales, activity trackers, Bluetooth thermometers, and more. Today Nokia is not only announcing new health products, but also discontinuing the Withings brand entirely.

Withings' entire product portfolio has been rebranded to Nokia, and withings.com now redirects to health.nokia.com. All of Withings' existing products seem to have made the transition, except the Ara sleep tracker from 2014, which is being discontinued.

Nokia 3, 5, and 6 are now available in India

Tuesday, June 13th, 2017

As I'm sure many of you know, HMD Global became the exclusive licensee of Nokia in 2016, and released the Nokia 6 in China earlier this year. At Mobile World Congress, two more models were announced - the Nokia 5 and 3. Starting today, Nokia/HMD has begun selling all three phones in India.

I recommend reading the WMC announcement post for details about all three phones, but I'll briefly go over them again.
