Slowly but surely, HMD Global has been rolling out Android 9 Pie to its Nokia-branded phones. The Nokia 7 Plus, 6.1, 6.1 Plus, 5.1, 5.1 Plus, 8, and 8 Sirocco have all received Pie by now. If your Nokia device still doesn't have Pie, don't fret — HMD has laid out its update timeline for all remaining phones.

Nokia 8 Sirocco kernel source code now available

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

Hot on the heels of the Android Pie update from earlier this month, HMD Global has released the kernel source code for the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Of course, most people won't be able to do much with this, though it might be good news for the few who've unlocked their bootloaders (yes, it's possible).

The Nokia 8 Sirocco, like every other Nokia phone aside from the Nokia 8, has a bootloader that HMD is unwilling to offer unlocking for.

DontKillMyApp.com shames OEMs that needlessly kill useful background processes to save battery life

Sunday, January 13th, 2019

The days when third-party battery-saving apps were necessary to hit a satisfactory number of hours off a single charge are long behind the vast majority of Android users, thanks to improvements like Doze and Adaptive Battery. But in some cases, this measure of progress has become something of a Pyrrhic victory, with useful background processes carelessly destroyed and developers taking the brunt of user ire. Well, the Urbandroid team — the gang behind apps Sleep As Android, Twilight, and others — doesn't plan on going quietly into the night.

Nokia’s first hole-punch phone appears in new renders

Wednesday, January 9th, 2019

Huawei, Honor, Motorola, Samsung, and a few other companies are working on 'hole-punch' phones — where a small area inside the screen is removed for the front-facing camera. It looks like Nokia is now joining the party, if renders from a leaked CAD file are to be believed.

@OnLeaks to publish the first renders of Nokia's upcoming hole-punch phone, which may be called the Nokia 8.1 Plus.

Nokia 8 Sirocco finally gets a slice of Android 9 Pie

Wednesday, January 9th, 2019

Owners of HMD Global's Nokia 8 Sirocco understandably thought that buying the flagship Android One model would guarantee them fast updates, but they've since had to sit back and watch plenty of other phones get Pie ahead of them. Thankfully, the wait is over and the rollout starts today.

As HMD points out, it's the 8th Nokia phone to get bumped to the latest version of Android. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is undoubtedly the darling of the lineup, at least until the Nokia 9 PureView becomes official, so it's good to see that it's now caught up with its cheaper siblings.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 8.1

Thursday, January 3rd, 2019

The recently released Nokia 8.1 (also called Nokia X7 in China) is one of the more powerful Android One devices you can currently buy. HMD Global launched the phone last month with Android Pie and has now published the kernel source code.

The smell of a fresh new source code release

The Nokia 8.1 is a solid mid-range offering, with a Snapdragon 710 chip, a 6.2" 1080p display, and a healthy amount of RAM, battery, and internal storage.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 7 Plus

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

The Nokia 7 Plus is one of the HMD Global's higher-specced phones, although still technically mid-range with its Snapdragon 660 chip and 6" IPS LCD display, it's one of the best Android One phones you can get. The Finnish company has now published the kernel source code.

Sadly, as with all Nokia-branded Android devices, the bootloader is locked so the code won't be much use to any ROM builders. Releasing the code is part of the deal with a GPL phone, and HMD is merely complying.

[Update: Now with video] Nokia 9 PureView and its five rear cameras leak once again

Tuesday, January 1st, 2019

Flagship phones with just one rear camera are becoming rare, and apparently two sensors on the back isn't enough either. Nokia's upcoming flagship, the Nokia 9 PureView, has previously been rendered with a whopping five cameras on the back, and this latest leak from Evan Blass confirms the camera setup.
