Friday, February 9th, 2018

Nest's been in the news a lot lately, with word that it's being folded into Google's hardware division closely followed by the announcement that its last remaining founder is leaving the company. Nest's in that position because of its great connected home products, and thanks to a new app update they stand to get even better.

If you have a Nest Cam IQ, you might have encountered an issue whereby you have multiple familiar face entries that it just doesn't understand are the same person.

Nest is being swallowed up by Google’s hardware team

Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

Google acquired Nest about four years ago, but it kept the company at arm's length. Nest products are still designed and managed by Nest, an Alphabet company. That may be changing soon. Google says it's merging Nest with the Google hardware team to "supercharge" Nest's mission.

This move wouldn't have been possible in past years because Google didn't even have a unified hardware vision. Now, the company has a real team led by former Motorola CEO Rick Osterloh.

Android’s Security Director moves to Nest, replaced by Dave Kleidermacher

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018

It's no easy task to keep an operating system secure, especially one as widespread as Android. Adrian Ludwig has served as the Director of Android Security since 2011, but now he's jumping to another part of the Google mothership - Nest.

Ludwig announced on his Google+ account that he has become Nest's new Director of Security and Privacy. He wrote, "Security and privacy are critical for Nest’s products and users, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help Nest build great user experiences and provide a guiding light as the entire IoT industry focuses attention on these issues."

'Internet of Things' devices are often targets for malware attacks, so it makes sense that Google would place a priority on making sure Nest's cameras and other products are secure.

Nest Secure review: Security comes at a price

Wednesday, December 27th, 2017

Nest has made its name by adding smart features to things that you might already have around the house. It's worked pretty well in the past with devices like the Nest Thermostat, but home security is a more serious business. It's different than a thermostat—people rely on a security system to control access to their homes. The new Nest Secure is trying to take the place of an existing product with an important function.

[Deal Alert] Get a free Home Mini with purchase of any Nest product priced over $99 from the Google Store and Nest

Saturday, December 2nd, 2017

We've been seeing a ton of deals on the Home Mini lately, namely with the $29 price drop 'til the end of 2017, the $4 deal through Walmart and Google Express, and more. Google even offered them for free with Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL purchases again. Now Nest and Google are handing free Home Minis out to those who purchase a Nest product for over $99.

This isn't as great of a deal for older Nest products that were discounted during Black Friday, but for newer ones like Nest Protect, Thermostat E, or the new Outdoor IQ (when it comes out), this is a nice little incentive.
