Android 8.0 Oreo rolling out to AT&T Moto Z2 Force

Friday, February 23rd, 2018

The Moto Z2 Force is Motorola's current flagship device, and the Verizon model started receiving Android 8.0 Oreo in late December. Just a few days later, Oreo reached the T-Mobile variant. For some reason, it has taken AT&T two more months to deliver the update, but it's finally here.

The update started rolling out on February 20, and XDA user simonb255 posted screenshots from his AT&T Z2 Force.

Google will begin certifying Android devices for business use, starting with phones from LG, BlackBerry, Motorola, and others

Wednesday, February 21st, 2018

When it comes to security, Android devices are a mixed bag - to say the least. Few manufacturers make promises about long-term support, and timely security updates are rare. This is understandably a concern for large businesses, which often don't want to worry about security flaws or constantly deploy new devices. For many enterprise customers, the question of which Android phones should be used is difficult to answer.

Google's solution to this problem is the 'Android Enterprise Recommended' program, which defines which Android devices are ideal for business use.

[Deal Alert] Prime Exclusive Moto X4 on sale for $249.99 ($100 off) via Amazon

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

Motorola made some changes to its Prime Exclusive phones recently to make them less annoying but also less economical. They cost a bit more, but you don't have ads on the lock screen anymore. The price isn't a problem for the Moto X4 right now, which is deeply discounted to $250. With the removal of ads, this is a great deal.

The standard Moto version of the X4 costs $400, and the Prime version is usually $50 cheaper.

Moto Tab review: Look elsewhere for your tablet needs

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

The Android tablet market is a proverbial scarce wasteland these days. It has been quite some time since we saw something from Samsung or Asus, two of the last major stalwart players in this space (excluding Amazon, obviously). Tablets are not what they were in years past, though I personally still find having one useful for certain situations, despite Android leaving much to be desired in this aspect.

In either an attempt to capitalize on a dead horse, or to jumpstart one, AT&T teamed up with Lenovo to "create" the Moto Tab, a device exclusive to the giant carrier and aimed at its DirecTV customers.

[Update: Amazon version, too] Oreo update now rolling out to unlocked Moto X4 in non-Android One form

Friday, February 16th, 2018

The Android One version of the Moto X4 began receiving its Oreo update a few days before Christmas, but as expected, it took some extra time for Oreo to hit the standard model. A "Senior MotoAgent" on Motorola's (well, now technically Lenovo's) forums announced yesterday that Oreo has begun to roll out to the X4.

Verizon Moto G4 Play gets Android 7.1.1 Nougat after being stuck on 6.0.1 for a long time

Motorola's excellent track record with updating devices fell by the wayside as it became part of Lenovo and started releasing more device variants than anyone can keep track of each year. Nothing is better proof of that than the Moto G4 Play's situation. The device, which was released on September of 2016, has been stuck on Marshmallow 6.0.1 for months and months as owners gave up on even getting an update.

TeamWin Recovery Project, better known as TWRP, is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to mod their device - from installing ROMs to simply making backups. The last time we covered TWRP, the project added support for the Razer Phone, Redmi 5, a handful of Galaxy Tab S2 models, and more. Over the past month, even more devices have been added to the official build roster, including Motorola's latest flagship.

Verizon Droid Maxx 2 updated to… Android 7.0 Nougat

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

The Moto X Play was released in 2015, as a larger version of the X Style with a much bigger battery. In the United States, it was rebranded to the 'Droid Maxx 2,' a Verizon exclusive. Both models shipped with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and were later updated to Marshmallow. The Moto X Style received Android 7.1.1 Nougat in September of last year (at least in India), but the Maxx 2 has been stuck with 6.0.

Some Moto Z2 Force owners report the ShatterShield screen layer is peeling off

Tuesday, February 6th, 2018

The Moto Z2 Force is just the latest device to ship with Motorola's ShatterShield screen technology. That includes a plastic layer on top that won't crack, but it does scratch. That's not the only issue, apparently. Multiple owners of the Z2 Force are complaining that the top layer of the screen has a tendency to peel off after a few months of use.

These reports come by way of Twitter, Lenovo/Motorola's support forums, and XDA.
