Friday, February 22nd, 2019

Motorola announced the G7 several weeks back but it didn't have a firm release date at the time. Well, now things are clearer. Motorola will happily take your money for the G7 today, but pre-orders won't ship for a couple more weeks.

The Moto G7 has a 6.2-inch 1080p display with a small notch at the top for the front-facing camera. There's also a chin at the bottom because it's an LCD.

[Update: G7 Power too] Motorola releases Pie kernel code for the P30 Note and G6 Plus

Thursday, February 21st, 2019

Slowly but surely, Android 9 Pie is rolling out to Motorola's lineup of phones. That also means new kernel source packages, which can be used by developers to create custom Pie-based ROMs and recoveries. Motorola has now released two new source packages for two (or possibly three) devices.

The first kernel source package is for the Moto P30 Note, nicknamed 'Chef.' The internationally-released Motorola One Power is based on the P30 Note, and even shares a similar nickname ('chef_sprout'), so it's possible this kernel package is for both devices.

Moto Mods: How a modular hardware platform locked Motorola into a cycle of failure

Thursday, February 21st, 2019

We all wish our phones could do more from time to time, but you can't just add new features without buying a new device, right? Oh, you're forgetting about Moto Mods. You can add new hardware capabilities to your phone like a speaker, a zoom camera, or projector. It changed everything... actually, that's wrong. Smartphones are largely the same as they were in 2016, but Motorola is still at least going through the motions to pretend Mods are a good idea.

6 of our favorite tech deals this week: Pixel and Moto phones, dirt-cheap 4K movies, and more

Saturday, February 16th, 2019

It's understandable for mobile tech enthusiasts to be suffering from a bit of an attention-span issue right now. After all, we're just a little over a week away from the start of Mobile World Congress 2019, one of the biggest new-product expos of the year. With all those fresh hot devices waiting in the wings, how are we to focus on anything else? Somehow, though, we're managing to keep at least some attention on the present, and over the past week we've covered a lot of tempting deals — here are some of the best that are still active:

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL: $150 off

While there's not going to be any shortage of new phones at MWC, Pixel phones stand on their own, and even the flashiest new hardware can't compete with their ability to pick up new Android features first.

  • Huawei Nova 4
  • Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Power, Moto G7 Play
  • Oppo R17 Pro
  • Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition

Oddly, the LG Signature 2017 and 2018 phones that were added in the last update have now been removed with no explanation.
