Motorola brings the $100 Moto E5 to the US

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

In the realm of US budget phones, Motorola is one of the dominant players. Back in April, the company announced several new devices, which included the new Moto E family. The US already saw the E5 Play and E5 Plus, but now we're getting the regular E on TracFone (and its subsidiary brands). Best part? It's just $100.

We talked about this phone a few months ago, so if you're interested in a spec table, just head over here.

Moto G7 CAD-based renders show off waterdrop notch and rear fingerprint sensor

Friday, October 5th, 2018

Thanks to renders based on factory CAD designs, we're getting our first look at the next incarnation of Lenovo/Moto's popular mid-range smartphone. The Moto G7 isn't due to be launched until 2019, but we now know to expect a new display with a waterdrop notch and curved corners with the fingerprint reader embedded in the 'M' logo on the back (why it took Moto so long to start doing this, I have no idea).

Motorola releases G5 Plus kernel source code for Android 8.1 Oreo

Friday, September 28th, 2018

You hear us talk a lot about manufacturers releasing the kernel source codes for their devices. Some resist hard, while others just take some time. In the case of the latter, Motorola released the Android 8.1 Oreo sources for the Moto G5 Plus over on its Github.

Though succeeded by the G5S Plus – which had it's 8.1 Oreo kernel sources released a few months ago – the Moto G5 Plus (codename Potter) is still a good budget phone.

The Android phones with the best resale value in 2018

Saturday, September 22nd, 2018

Usually, you can't buy a phone with the intention of later flipping it for profit like, say, a house or a car. But planning your purchase around sustained resale value can be a good way to budget for more frequent upgrades. In fact, I'm regularly asked by friends and our more budget conscious readers which models and brands I've noticed hold their value the best, so here's a brief list of my (relatively) safe bets.

Moto Face Unlock app hits the Play Store

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

If you've got a Motorola phone from this year, it already has a Motorola-branded face unlock feature in the settings. Now, there's a companion app in the Play Store for those phones. Thus, Moto can update your pre-loaded face unlock with new features. There aren't any new features in the first Play Store version, though.

The Moto Face Unlock app is compatible with devices like the Moto G6, Z3 Play, and Z3.

Android 8.1 Oreo rolling out to the Amazon Prime and retail Moto X4

Tuesday, June 19th, 2018

Amazon's Prime Edition phones don't have ads anymore, but there is some Amazon bloat that can affect updates. However, Amazon and Moto have managed t keep the retail and Prime versions in sync. About a month after the Android 8.1 update hit the Android One Moto X4, the Amazon and retail versions are getting the OTA (version OPW28.2).

The phone already had Android 8.0, so there won't be many changes here.

Win one of three unlocked Moto G6s from Ting and Android Police [US]

Monday, June 11th, 2018

Motorola has long been king of the mid-range selection here in the US, and the new Moto G6 continues that trend, mixing impressive specs like a 5.7" 108op 18:9 display, dual camera system, and Android 8.0 Oreo with an affordable price. That's why Ting and Android Police are teaming up to give away three brand new, unlocked Moto G6 phones.

For the uninitiated, Ting is an MVNO that uses both T-Mobile and Sprint to provide its subscribers with service—sort of like Google's Project Fi.

[Deal Alert] Motorola discounting Moto X4 to $300 ($100 off), Moto G5S Plus 64GB to $250 ($100 off), and more

Thursday, June 7th, 2018

Motorola has quite a few discounts going on through its official site. Most of them concern Moto Mods, which nobody really cares about these days, but two new ones have just gone live: $100 off the Moto X4, $100 off the 64GB Moto G5S Plus, and $50 off the 32GB Moto G5S Plus.

Here are the new highlight deals, which are valid until June 30th:

The Moto X4's $100 discount is pretty good; it's not as good as the $150 credit from Project Fi or the Prime Exclusive discounts Amazon sometimes offers, but this is a straightforward discount and you don't get any Amazon crapware on your phone.

Wednesday, June 6th, 2018

Lenovo-owned Motorola hasn't exactly set the world alight with the modular accessories made for its Moto Z line, yet here is the first of the 3rd generation in the much-maligned phone line. For better or worse, Moto is going to make a real go of these Moto Mods, and in a bid to get them into people's hands, the new Moto Z3 Play will even come bundled with an unsolicited Moto Power Pack mod.
