Motorola releases kernel source for E5 Play Android Go edition

Thursday, October 11th, 2018

Earlier this year, Motorola released a special Android Go version of its lowest-end phone, the Moto E5 Play. It uses Google's Android Go platform, and is only available in a handful of European and Latin American countries. The phone might start to receive custom ROMs though, now that Motorola has released the kernel source code.

Back in April, Motorola introduced six - yes, six - smartphones simultaneously. Three belonged to the Moto G6 line, and the other three were in the Moto E5 family. The company has now published the Oreo source codes for the Moto G6 Play and E5 Play.

Moto E5 Play Android Go edition announced for Europe and Latin America

Friday, July 13th, 2018

Back in April, Motorola announced six phones on the same day - three with the G6 nameplate, and three with the E5 name. Apparently that wasn't enough, though, because Motorola has just announced a Moto E5 Play Android Go edition. And confusingly enough, it doesn't appear to share much with the standard Moto E5 Play.

While the E5 Play has a 5.2" 720p screen in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the E5 Play Android Go (why couldn't they just call it "Moto E5 Go"?) comes with a 5.3" screen of unknown resolution in an 18:9 ratio.

If you’re planning to buy one of Motorola’s newest handsets, you should be aware that you won’t get lengthy software support. Motorola is promising just one major Android upgrade for the new Moto G6 series, while the Moto E5 series may not get a major update at all.

Motorola unveiled its new smartphone lineup at an event in New York City on Thursday. There are six new handsets altogether, including the midrange Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play, and the budget Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus, and Moto E5 Play.

For smartphone fans who enjoy a good spoiler, we started the year off with a pretty substantial one, when in mid-January a very convincing peek at Motorola's 2018 lineup surfaced.
