Signal adds optional link previews for Imgur, Instagram, Reddit, and YouTube

Wednesday, February 6th, 2019

We don't often discuss Signal here at AP, not out of any sort of distaste, but because it adds new features and improvements at a slower pace than WhatsApp or Telegram. But if you happen to use Signal, then the new version has link previews in store for you. It's limited to four websites for now, but it's a good start.

According to Signal, the reason that only Imgur, Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube are supported is because those are four of the most popular websites and all of them share a focus on visual media.

Viber 10 introduces hidden numbers in Communities, group calls, and a redesigned UI

Monday, February 4th, 2019

Viber just announced the launch of the latest revision to its mobile messaging app, bringing a new UI and some new group features. The company also claims that the redesign offers users double the performance when sending messages.

Here's a brief rundown of what's new:

  • Simple navigation: Easily roam the app in a lighter and sleeker interface and get exactly what users need, right where they expect to find it
  • Easy access: Users get all private and group chats, Communities, chatbots, and favorite public content in one main chat list
  • Singular calls screen: In the updated “Calls” screen, users can find their most recent calls, access phone book contacts screen and manage their Viber Out subscriptions
  • Hidden Number Chats: Allow users to engage and message with one another without having to exchange phone numbers, allowing for spontaneous and casual interactions with the new people users meet through Communities, yet ensuring they remain safe
  • Viber Group Calls: Allow up to five users to initiate a group voice call by adding people to an existing call or by starting one right from an existing group chat

The two major new features that Viber wants to note are the latter couple: hidden number chats and group calls.

Google confirms Allo will shut down, Hangouts Chat and Meet coming to non-corporate users

Thursday, December 6th, 2018

There has been a whirlwind of rumors around Google's messaging strategy over the past few days. First we heard that Hangouts might be shutting down, with a Google product lead refuting the claims, then a report came out that Allo is also shutting down. Google has now published a blog post to set the record straight, and it seems the rumors were mostly true.

The announcement mostly reiterates what we already assumed was true — the company is focusing on Android Messages and Duo for consumers, and Hangouts Chat and Meet for businesses.

Allo, is anybody out there? A brief history of Google’s ill-fated messenger [Updated]

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018

Back in April, it was revealed that development for Allo was temporarily suspended while Google redoubled its efforts at spreading the gospel of RCS. At the time, the company reassured consumers that it was still committed to supporting Allo, but the recent news of it's expected shutdown, paired with a total absence of updates for the last ten months, casts those earlier statements into severe doubt.

Yahoo Together is another group messaging app nobody asked for [APK Download]

Thursday, October 4th, 2018

If there's one thing we don't have enough of in this world, it's messaging apps. Thankfully, Yahoo's latest creation is exactly that, and it's designed to simplify group communication between friends, family, and colleagues. You may have read about the invite-only Yahoo Squirrel app a few months back — well now it's out of testing and open to everyone.

I suppose we can all agree that group chats on whatever app we might use can be frustrating.

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Yesterday, Google announced an update to Android Messages that would bring a new richer search interface with people and categories front and center. Today, the new version of Messages is starting to roll out with that change and a few more things in tow.

New app icon

The first thing you may notice about Android Messages v3.6 is that it brings an updated app icon. Or you may not see it, because the changes are quite subtle, unless you put the two icons next to each other.

New Material UI and dark mode are back in latest Android Messages [APK Download]

Sunday, August 26th, 2018

If there's one thing we love when it comes to the subject of Android here, it's a good tease. Over the last couple of weeks, Google surreptitiously added and subsequently disabled an updated Material Design interface for Android Messages. In addition to the app's blinding new all-white aesthetic, it also included a new dark mode that should be a bit easier on the eyes at night. Though the updated design was seemingly disabled, it's now back in the latest version — and you can download it now.

Android Messages v3.5 adds new Material UI with dark mode [APK Download]

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

Both Google Phone and Google Contacts had Material redesigns earlier this month. As such, people began speculating that Android Messages would also soon be revamped, and it's finally happened. On top of the redesign, version 3.5 of Android Messages also brings a long-awaited dark mode.

My first thought when seeing this new interface was that it resembles Samsung's messaging app quite strongly, with the all-white background and the pastel colors for contact photos.
