Allo, Duo, and Messages for web are all broken right now

Hot on the heels of a report that Allo may be shutting down soon, the aforementioned service has stopped working for many. On top of that, Duo and Messages for web are currently non-functional as well, pointing to an outage somewhere upstream.

On Allo and Messages for web, messages show as pending, but are never received by their intended recipients. In Duo, the call recipient actually receives a notification that a call from the sender is incoming, though the recipient is unable to interact with it or join the call.

Android Messages for Web gets its own Material UI overhaul too, with dark theme in tow

Android Messages has been teasing us lately with a new Material UI overhaul and a dark mode: it rolled out, was removed, then rolled back again with the latest update to the app. Now the web interface is following suit by donning its own sexy look with an even sexier dark theme to boot.   

When I opened Android Messages on the web this morning, it still had the original interface that came in June, but after updating the Android app to v3.5.053 and getting the new Material look on my phone, I re-opened the web version and saw it there too.

Google I/O is in full swing, and that means app updates are going to be rolling out in force. I'm sitting here in the press box before the keynote, but that won't stop the teardowns from happening. An update to the Android Messages app landed yesterday, bringing with it newly added capabilities to show link previews. Coming in from the teardown, we've got signs of a new dark mode and some helpful controls for the upcoming Messages for Web feature.
