Google gave the web version of Gmail a complete makeover in 2018, but the mobile app has remained mostly unchanged for years. We've been expecting a matching app update, and today is the big day. Google's new Material theme is hitting Gmail starting now. It looks like Google's other recently redesigned apps. Which is to say, it's bright.

The first thing you'll notice is Gmail's signature red top bar is gone.

Google Maps continues its Material makeover with new search interface

Monday, January 28th, 2019

Google Maps' Material transformation is an ongoing process. Over the past couple of months, we've seen one aspect after the other of the app change from the previous Material aesthetic to the new one — colloquially known as Material Design 2.0 or Material Theme. The most recent part of the UI to make the jump is the search interface.

In what seems to be a server-side test (some of us have it, others don't), the Maps app is shedding its previous search UI for a new one.

Material Design comes to Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Sites on the web

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

Following a slew of second-generation Material Design updates for the web over the past month or so (namely Calendar, Classroom, and Google Accounts), Google is bringing its modern design aesthetic to several more G Suite platforms on the web. Material Design is hitting Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Sites beginning today, January 15.

These updates won't include any functionality changes, just design tweaks that'll bring these web apps in-line with all the other major Google apps that received Material refreshes so far.

Play Books is the latest Google app to switch to the updated Material Theme

Thursday, January 10th, 2019

Google's been slowly but surely updating its apps to match its new Material Theme look (sometimes called "Material Design 2," much to Google's chagrin). In some cases we've seen substantial changes, sometimes the differences are minor. Play Books is the latest first-party app to get a new coat of paint, and in this case, the tweaks are pretty small.

All of our screenshots of the updated design are in Russian, so a direct comparison requires a bit more imagination.

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Most of us focus on the consumer or enterprise-facing products released by Google, but it actually has another big customer we often forget about: education. And to kick of 2019, Google is announcing a handful of new features for its Google Classroom product.

In case you're unfamiliar, Google Classroom (at its very simplest) is a web service that allows teachers to hand out, review, grade, and return digital assignments for their classroom.

Google Account on the web gets new Material Design makeover

Friday, December 21st, 2018

Slowly but surely, all of Google's products are being updated to the latest evolution of its Material Design theme. The whiter, more rounded look came to the Google Account settings on Android back in the summer, and now it's now arrived at myaccount.google.com on the web.

As we've seen with Google's other properties, the left sidebar now has a rounded pastel-shaded highlight to denote where you are, all of the cards have nice rounded corners, and the Google Sans typeface is increasingly prominent.

Unlike some Google apps, the Calendar update is on the subtle side. See below for some quick comparisons. You're mostly looking at new buttons, those hollow icons, and font tweaks.

Whether you know it as Material theme or Material Design 2, Google continues to roll out its refreshed Material aesthetic across all of its various properties. The latest to gain the new look is the Google search app itself, which is rolling out a new bottom bar look that swaps out a search button for a shortcut to 'Collections,' where users can find saved content like images, bookmarks, and Maps lists.
