Monday, April 30th, 2018

LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM by far, and the project continues to update more devices to version 15.1 (based on Android 8.1 Oreo). Last time we covered LineageOS, the OnePlus 2, Pixel C, and Nexus 6 received Oreo. Since then, several more devices have been updated, including Google's flagship phone from 2012.

The Le Max 2 (x2), Motorola Moto Z (griffin), and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 (scorpio) already have 15.1 nighties available.

LineageOS apologises for late and ‘bad taste’ April Fools’ joke

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018

Every year on April Fools' day we see many companies and organizations try their hand at comedy in a bid to score some good publicity. Some get it spot on — my personal favorite came from the European Parliament, claiming on Twitter that all EU passports would become blue. Inevitably, some get it spectacularly wrong, and in the Android community this year that unwanted accolade goes LineageOS. The team behind it has now issued an apology.

Don’t freak out: LineageOS has a very bad and very late April Fools’ joke in latest builds

Thursday, April 5th, 2018

LineageOS announced its April Fools' Day joke at the appropriate time back on Sunday, but the gag itself wasn't ready until the most recent builds were released yesterday. Now that it has actually landed (late), the hoax has lost both its relevance and its taste. So if you flash this week's update and see a warning about software counterfeiting and cryptocurrency mining, don't freak out. It's just a very late, very bad joke.

The warning, as it appears on a freshly-updated device.

[Continuously Updated] 2018 April Fools’ Roundup: All the jokes from around the web

Sunday, April 1st, 2018

April Fools' day is almost upon us, but each year at least a few companies are unable to restrain themselves, pushing out their pranks early. Google's various divisions do a decent job each year. Last year's Google Gnome was a pretty good one, and the Maps team's 2014 Pokemon prank was a memorable one. OnePlus even does a good job.

It can be tough keeping track, though, so let us handle the work while you enjoy the jokes.

After three years of official support, Google confirmed yesterday that the long-lived Nexus Player would no longer receive Android updates. While Android Oreo will continue to serve most users just fine, the custom ROM community will likely keep it updated for years to come. LineageOS already supported the set-top box with Nougat builds, but now it has been updated to Android 8.1 Oreo.

LineageOS 15.1 builds for the Nexus Player (fugu) are available here.

Lineage opens up to developers with new SDK, including APIs for styles and profiles

Wednesday, March 21st, 2018

From the ashes of the popular CyanogenMod custom ROM, LineageOS has emerged as a worthy successor, providing users the same near stock experience with a few useful customization options. Now, Lineage is introducing an SDK in a bid to get developers building interesting things based on the company's own APIs.

The first public release is Llama (API 9), and the company has some documentation on its Wiki to help devs get started.
