Pixel 3’s ‘gesture’ navigation and new multitasking UI can be disabled — but it’ll cost you the Pixel Launcher

Saturday, October 20th, 2018

Google decided to change things up when it came to navigating around Android, starting with Pie. Although the new "gesture" system was an optional change for updated devices, it's a mandatory part of the Pixel 3 experience.  Thankfully for those that dislike Google's forced change to navigation — which has none of the space-saving advantages of iOS' gesture system — the folks at XDA have already figured out how to disable it, but you'll have to give up the Pixel Launcher.

Poco Launcher for Pocophone F1 finally gets stable release

Friday, October 12th, 2018

Xiaomi's Pocophone F1 has become a popular point of comparison in the Android flagship space, but no less popular is the Poco Launcher, with nearly half a million installs via the early access program on the Play Store, plus an extra third of a million via APK Mirror. Well, it looks like the Poco Launcher has seen enough testing over the last couple of months for Xiaomi to consider it stable, as today's update has lost its previous "beta" label.

Google search widget customization silently returns

Friday, September 21st, 2018

Customization options for Google's search widget first started to appear all the way back in 2017 before being unceremoniously yoinked. Hints of its return cropped up in a teardown earlier this month, and based on numerous reports and our own experiences over the last few days here at Android Police, it's back again.

The new setting is accessible not via a launcher's settings, as you might expect, but in the Google app. So far as I can tell, even phones I have running week-old versions of the Google app have the new feature, so it must have been remotely enabled by a server-side switch/flag change.

Edge Action turns the edge of your screen into the most useful part of your phone [Sponsored Post]

Friday, September 14th, 2018

The main downside to the ever-growing screens of our smartphones is that their size can make them hard to operate, especially one-handed. Thankfully, when you have hardware innovation you also get software innovation. Edge Action is an app that puts a launcher along the edge of your screen, making it easy to use your phone with one hand.

Here's how it works: Edge Action lives — as you might have guessed — as a subtle tab at the edge of your screen.

Rootless Launcher is back on the Play Store, sans companion app download prompt

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

Rootless Launcher (née Rootless Pixel Launcher) has had an exciting couple of weeks. It was released with much fanfare to the Play Store, and then subsequently pulled by Google for breaking the rules: apps can't download apps from other unknown sources outside the Play Store. Now it's back, but without the prompt to download its companion app.

It seems like a minor change, but the Rootless Pixel Bridge app is required to get the most out of Rootless Launcher.

Google has pulled Rootless Pixel Launcher from the Play Store

Tuesday, September 4th, 2018

Rootless Pixel Launcher is a popular home screen replacement, but until recently, it was only available to download from the project's GitHub repository. Last week it finally arrived on the Play Store, but now Google has pulled the app over a guidelines violation.

Like several other custom launchers, the Google Feed integration in Rootless Launcher requires installing a companion app. As we covered previously, Rootless Launcher will actually download the companion app for you if you don't have it installed.

Apex Launcher’s first update in a year falls flat on its face, and users are understandably pissed

One of the most powerful ways you can take control of your smartphone and really set the tone for your mobile user experience is by switching up your launcher. There are plenty of alternatives out there, from big, popular options like Nova Launcher to the small and obscure. The terrible Google Feed UI we all hoped would die is now rolling out to more people

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

Back in the spring, Google started testing a bubbly new interface for the ubiquitous content-promoting Feed. It was a confusing mixture of empty space and (still un-swipeable) cramped cards. The general reaction at the change could be accurately characterized as "revulsion" or "horror," but regardless of what our readers or we thought last time, Google has apparently decided to roll it out to a larger audience anyway.

And if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you.
