Motorola releases Pie kernel code for the P30 Note and G6 Plus

Thursday, February 21st, 2019

Slowly but surely, Android 9 Pie is rolling out to Motorola's lineup of phones. That also means new kernel source packages, which can be used by developers to create custom Pie-based ROMs and recoveries. Motorola has now released two new source packages for two (or possibly three) devices.

The first kernel source package is for the Moto P30 Note, nicknamed 'Chef.' The internationally-released Motorola One Power is based on the P30 Note, and even shares a similar nickname ('chef_sprout'), so it's possible this kernel package is for both devices.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus

The Nokia 7.1 and 6.1 Plus are mid-range Android One devices that were recently updated to Android 9.0 Pie. Following the update, HMD Global has published their kernel source code on its website.

HMD Global releases the kernel source code for its devices as per the terms of the various open source licenses it uses. Since most Nokia smartphones can't be bootloader unlocked (the Nokia 8 being the exception), so far there isn't much custom ROM developers can do with the source code.

HMD releases kernel source code for the Nokia 7 Plus

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

The Nokia 7 Plus is one of the HMD Global's higher-specced phones, although still technically mid-range with its Snapdragon 660 chip and 6" IPS LCD display, it's one of the best Android One phones you can get. The Finnish company has now published the kernel source code.

Sadly, as with all Nokia-branded Android devices, the bootloader is locked so the code won't be much use to any ROM builders. Releasing the code is part of the deal with a GPL phone, and HMD is merely complying.

Kernel source code for Moto E5 now available

Sunday, November 11th, 2018

Motorola has already released the kernel source code for most of the Moto E5 variants, including the E5 Plus and E5 Play Android Go Edition. However, the code for the plain E5 has not been available for developers to tinker with — until now.

Motorola just uploaded the Android 8.0 Oreo kernel source code for the regular Moto E5 (codename 'Nora') to GitHub. With this, developers can more easily create custom ROMs and recovery partitions for the phone.

Motorola releases Oreo kernel source code for the 2016 Moto Z Play

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

Android 8.0 Oreo first arrived on the Brazil Moto Z Play in March of this year, then it started to roll out in the United States two months later. Motorola usually releases the kernel source code for each update around the time it is released, but for whatever reason, the Oreo code hasn't been available until now.

The company today published updated kernel sources for the original Moto Z Play, which has the codename of 'addison.' The updated code allows developers to more easily create custom ROMs and recoveries that are based on Android 8.0.

Motorola releases kernel source code for Moto G6 Play

Sunday, April 29th, 2018

Even though Motorola usually doesn't push software updates in a timely manner, it doesn't take long for the company to release the accompanying kernel source code. The Moto G6 and E5 family was officially announced earlier this month, and even though the phones aren't widely available yet, Motorola has released the kernel source for one model - the G6 Play.

The kernel source code for the G6 Play has been uploaded to GitHub, under the device names "aljeter" and "jeter." If you're not familiar with this process, the code allows developers to create custom ROMs and recoveries more easily.

HMD Global finally releases Nokia 8 kernel source code

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

Despite doing a pretty good job on keeping its phones up to date, HMD Global has until recently had a bit of trouble with releasing the kernel sources for its devices. But in a "finally" moment, the exclusive manufacturer of the Nokia brand has released the Nokia 8 source codes to the developer community.

Having this code allows developers to start tinkering with custom software for the device(s) in question. These kernel sources for the Nokia 8, which was very well-received by our very own (awesome) Rita, have often been requested by the dev community since the phone launched.
